XCOM-like tactical espionage thriller Phantom Doctrine was my Gamescom highlight

doctrine1

At first glance, Phantom Doctrine [Steam page] looks an awful lot like a Cold War flavoured XCOM. That’s quite an exciting prospect and the closer I looked, the more exciting it became. There are agents instead of aliens, and some novel infiltration and reconnaissance systems, but everything from the UI to the cover system is immediately familiar. The tactical missions are hiding unexpected twists though, and zooming out to the campaign map shows that the setting informs every aspect of the game.

It’s early days, and there’s a lot of work to be done, but Phantom Doctrine might well be one of 2018’s strategy highlights.

Wot I Think: Hard West

Much has been made of how Hard West [official site] is XCOM-with-cowboys, but if anything it’s more like Jagged Alliance. With cowboys. Demon cowboys, yes, but really they’re just cowboys with horns and a flame effect. Point is, this isn’t a game about gradually building up a super-squad and a grandiose base in order to take down an almighty, otherworldly threat, but about a small gang of gun-wielders carving or limping their way through more disassociated skirmishes.

Cowboy XCOM-like Hard West Out Now; Some Thoughts

“Wild West XCOM” is about as good an elevator pitch as you could wish for. After a short delay, as of today we can find out whether Hard West [official site] can possibly live up to its glorious high concept. I played an earlier build a few weeks back – some thoughts, plus a launch trailer, below.

XCOWBZ: Hard West Riding Out On November 18th

Hard West [official site] looks interesting, taking XCOM-ish turn-based tacticalising into the supernatural Weird West. I dig XCOM and I dig the Weird West so yes, thank you. It had been lined up to begin rootin’ and tootin’ next Wednesday, but developers CreativeForge Games have decided to push it back a fortnight. They could’ve launched next week, they say, but think a little extra polish will do their cowboys and demons a world of good. To help pass the extra time, a new eight-minute gameplay trailer is out:

Weird Weird West: New Hard West Gameplay Video

“Think X-Com combat with Heroes of Might and Magic world map,” is the pitch that saw Hard West [official site] successfully crowdfunded in 2014, and it sounds just as great one year later – and looks it too.

With the turn-based tactical action game slated for release this autumn, developers Creative Forge Games have put together an eleven-minute commentated gameplay trailer showing a bank robbery. Given that Hard West is set not in the plain old Wild West but the supernatural Weird West, the robbery has a few complications. Watch:

Hard West Kickstarter Offers Turn-Based Cowboy Tactics

“In a nutshell, Hard West is a turn-based squad tactical with adventurous world exploration. Think X-Com combat with Heroes of Might and Magic world map.”

The idea of an elevator pitch is that it explains the concept of something in the time it takes to ride an elevator. Hard West’s Kickstarter pitch does it in the time it takes to travel between a single floor, and the rest of the page only cements my interest: it’s made by some of the same people who worked on Call of Juarez, it’s going for a “weird west” atmosphere, and the pitch video contains little snippets of existing game footage.
