Hex: Shards Of Fate Launches New Card Set

Ooh, it’s a veritable game of 400-card pick-up this week! Blizzard’s Hearthstone is blasting a new expansion, and fellow free-to-play card ’em up Hex: Shards of Fate [official site] is flinging a huge wad of new cards around too. Hex yesterday launched its fourth card set, named Primal Dawn, which adds over 250 new cards, a new card ability, a new tournament format, and all that.

Hex: Shards Of Fate Launches Singleplayer PvE Mode

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be wizards. Don’t let them flick wands and summon dybbuks. Make ’em be farmers and blacksmiths and such. A wizard’s life is violent, see, and they always end up fighting other wizards – folks they should trust to hold back their matted locks in the privy as they expelliarmus pints of dwarven brandy.

And yet, the youth pine for pointy hats and curly shoes. Mamas, please, at least point them towards Hex: Shards of Fate [official site]. The free-to-play card game has finally added singleplayer PvE so wizards can stop fighting each other and just kill robots.

How To Teach An AI To Play Hex: Shards Of Fate

Hex is getting smarter. It’s learning. While it might not quite be approaching the colloquial indifference (or destructive potential) of Wargames’ WOPR, it is watching you play – it’s watching everyone play – and it’s adapting.

After their tremendously successful Kickstarter (warning: contains clown death) and while settling a protracted lawsuit with the creators of Magic: The Gathering, developer Cryptozoic have been diligently ploughing through the alpha and beta stages of Hex [official site], regularly bolting on new features and laboriously constructing the vision that CEO Corey Jones first prophesied nearly two and half years ago.

Circle Of Protection: Hex And Magic Settle Lawsuit

Magic: The Gathering has been such a popular collectible card game that it’s no surprise to see traces of it in many modern CCGs, but Hex: Shards of Fate [official site] looked more like Magic than any digital CCG I’ve seen. Magic makers Wizards of the Coast noticed the similarities too, and in 2014 sued the Kickstarted CCG’s makers for allegedly infringing their intellectual property rights. Well, that’s now settled, and Hex will continue on its merry deckbuilding way.

Twist Twist Stick – Hex: Shards Of Fate’s Third Set Out

What’s a CCG without ongoing expansions? Another stack of brightly-coloured boxes to sit beneath a big “SALE!” on a shelf behind the counter at your local tabletop games shop, waiting to surprise folks who didn’t realise so many of the were ever even made. The ’90s were a wild time, you guys. Anyway, the point is: Hex: Shards of Fate [official site] has received its third card set.

The ‘Armies of Myth’ expansion brings 250 new cards to the free-to-play virtual CCG, including several new card abilities and a new card type.

Impressions: Hex – Shards of Fate

Hex: Shards of Fate [official site] was kickstarted successfully in mid-2013, hot on the cardboard-heels of developer Cryptozoic’s final set of the physical WoW TCG. Long before Hearthstone made it clear that digital cards were going to be a successful market, the gaming public pitched in two million dollars and change for the MMO/TCG hybrid. While its single player campaign and the MMO portion’s dungeons, raids and guilds are yet to materialise, Hex is onto a third set release of cards in a free to play model. Here’s some thoughts after a few hours of play.

A Kind Of Magic: Hex ‘Shattered Destiny’ Set Out

Hearthstone’s expansion Goblins vs. Gnomes wasn’t the only big release in virtual collectible card games this week, mind. Tuesday brought the second card set for Hex: Shards of Fate, another free-to-play which I hear is awfully popular and quite good. (And Mojang’s Scrolls is due to launch today.) Looking at Hex now, I see so much of Magic: The Gathering that I should run screaming before it drags me in. But the ‘Shattered Destiny’ expansion is out and oh no I think I even know which Magic cards inspired some of these. Help don’t let me download this client.

Hands On With Hex: Shards Of Fate

I am the Little Red Rabbit Hoodlum, a fluffy-eared cleric armed with a legion of suicidal bunnies and ravenous mushroom people. My opponent is a knight in shining armor, who practically gleams with self-righteous pomposity, her hair a flaxen banner in the imagined sun. She laughs when she sees me and my army of floof, not knowing that she stands no chance.

Hex: Shards of Fate is a trading card game that will feel like home for anyone who has ever enjoyed Magic the Gathering. It has minions to summon, enchantments to dole out, counterspells to launch, and even five resource types to make use of. The world is a fantastical one, obviously, with shamanistic coyotes and spider-creatures and my favorite, the ultra-violent shin’hare. Although the universe is replete with dwarves, elves, and humans, it also features a parasitic alien consciousness capable of dragging the dead back into unliving.

Oi, That’s Mine! Wizards of the Coast Sues Cryptozoic

All hail me, the king of photoshop. Bad photoshop. That doesn't use Photoshop.

Uh-oh.

It seems like only almost exactly a month since I was musing on the existence of Hex: Shards of Fate and its similarities to Magic: The Gathering. Well, it turns out that a month before that Wizards of the Coast (or, more accurately, their lawyers) were doing a little more than raising an eyebrow. They’ve gone whole hog, taking Cryptozoic and sub-company Hex Entertainment to court for “copyright, patent and trade dress infringement.” To which the wider internet has responded with a mix of “what do those things mean?” and outrage. Essentially, Wizards believe that Hex is too similar to Magic in the way that is looks, functions and plays to be distinct. This comes down to a number of different factors like whether customers will confuse the two brands as well as whether there’s been wholesale nicking of work. Now, I am not a lawyer, nor should I be, however I’ve dug up a few juicy morsels and am more than happy to throw out an opinion or two, which you’ll find below.

It’s Weird We Haven’t Posted About Hex Before

Usually upon discovering a juicy slice of news, first stop is the monolithic RPS archives where I spend a lifetime reading manuscripts on the games in question. It’s a herculean task which is rewarded only by a dip into the fountain of youthtube, where I am renewed and can spend equal time scratching out a post on ancient rolls of parchment. Finally they allow me to die – only to be replaced by a clone who begins the same work on a new venture. But! I have broken free of the cycle by discovering that not a word has been recorded about mostly cardboard-based Cryptozoic’s MMOTCG Hex: Shards of Fate within our halls. Quick, hasten forth, and learn all there is to know, now that the Beta phase has started.
