In Celebration Of Perfectly Average Action Games

We don’t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much.

There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game.

Double Fine Recover Iron Brigade, Ditch GFWL

Like a video games company keen to own and preserve everything it makes, Double Fine have swooped in to snatch back 2012’s Iron Brigade [official site]. That simile’s perhaps unpoetic and unamusing. Could’ve said “a big protective bird” or tried a 50 Shades of Grey joke that didn’t work and was a good few years behind pop culture.

Anyway, the point is, Double Fine now own The Intellectual Property Formerly Known As Trenched and have started self-publishing it – taking over from Microsoft Studios. To celebrate this, they’ve put it on sale and ripped out the hateful Games for Windows – Live.

Wot I Think: Iron Brigade

Double Fine’s playful mech-tower defence mash-up Iron Brigade (née Trenched) arrived on PC just over a week back, far too many months after its console version. I’ve been meaning to write about it for some time, but became waylaid by a different kind of big stompy robot and by creating big trouble in little Hong Kong. Now I am ready. Ready for what? Why, to tell you exactly what I think, of course. Let slip the trenches of war!

Double Fine’s Iron Brigade Digs New Trench On PC

The biggest change between this alternate history and our own? It's way more blue.

It’s been a long time in coming, but we’re finally about to have every recent Double Fine release on our humble Greatest Platform On Earth And In The Whole Of Human History. Well, aside from that motion-controlled Sesame Street game, anyway. But until Cookie Monster arrives and lapses into a homicidal rage over the fact that all I’ve eaten today is four cookies, I’ll just have to make do with infinitely customizable World War I mechs. Because Tim Schafer’s brain is a national treasure.
