Sins Of A Dark Age Launches Out Of Early Access As F2P

Even by the time Sins of a Solar Empire folks Ironclad Games announced their MOBA Sins of a Dark Age [official site] in 2012, the genre was a little overcrowded. SoaDA was originally billed as a MOBA/RTS, but later dropped bits like base-building. It’s still trying to be more ambitious than you average Dote ‘em up or Loller, though.

Now, after a lengthy stretch on Steam Early Access, where it costs $5 (and it was $25 for beta access before that), Sins of a Dark Age is out free-to-play for all to manage lords. It’s on Steam.

DotAbsolution: See Sins Of A Dark Age In Motion

So, which IS better - League of Legends or Dota 2? Never been quite sure.

Swapping deep space for fantasy, Sins Of A Solar Empire creators Ironclad Games have released some game and talky-head footage of their upcoming MOBA Sins Of A Dark Age – the main sins being wrath, greed, and – no doubt the most hated by its players – sloth.

It’s hoping to be a bit more dynamic than most, using its Realm Quests system to keep shaking things up, but don’t take my word for that. Here’s the game director himself showing off some of that ‘gameplay’ stuff that’s been quite popular lately. There will be clicking.

Sins Of A Dark Age Enters New Age, Drops RTS Bits

Sins of a Dark Age ain’t what it used to be. In spite of my totally sly, semi-misleading opening remark, I don’t necessarily mean it’s worse. However, I have no idea if it’s better either. It’s just, you know, different. In short, though, Ironclad’s decided to remove the RTS-like Commander role from its MOBA flagship, so now it’s hoping to weave between the toes of titans like DOTA 2 and League of Legends by emphasizing RPG aspects. “Realm Quests,” as they’re known, are triggered by a Left-4-Dead-ish Quest Director and introduce special conditions into otherwise standard MOBA matches. “Imagine dealing with the threat of a vermin carried deadly plague, welcoming the arrival of timely reinforcements, ordering your own personal troops, escorting a merchant convoy, hauling back stolen treasure, racing to gain favor of a powerful ally or even working cooperatively with your enemy against a deadly common threat,” says Ironclad. More details after the break.

Rebellion Suing Stardock Over The Word ‘Rebellion’

Do not construe the raised fist as solidarity. It's part of the logo!
Rebellion are suing Stardock and Ironclad Games over the use of the term “Rebellion”. Ironclad’s standalone expansion pack for their strategy series was called Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, and the trademark suit claims that the use of the word has “deprived [Rebellion] of substantial sales of its products”. Blimey.

Sins Of A Solar Empire: Rebellion Hits Final Beta Phase

Stardock and Ironclad Games send word that the final phase of their Sins Of A Solar Empire: Rebellion beta is now underway, and have immortalised that event with a YouTube’d trailer, which you can see below, along with the main trailer. The pre-orders for the new version of the game get you access to the beta, of course, and you get $10 off if you own the original game. I have to say I am quite excited about Rebellion, which arrives June 12th, because even though it is essentially a standalone expansion, it’s as close as we’re going to get to a sequel to the original RTS, which consumed a huge chunk of my time when it hit four years ago. Rebellion, with a huge suite of options derived from the previous mini-expansions, and new visuals, is certainly going to get my attention.

Sins Of A Dark Age: The World’s First F2PMOBARTS

STARING EYES

I just Googled ‘F2PMOBARTS’ and received nothing. Well done, Ironclad Games! Sins Of A Dark Age, has broken the all-seeing eye of the world’s best search engine, and brought out its passive-aggressive side: “Did you mean: ‘F2P MOBARTS'”. No, Google. I did not. F2PMOBARTS, you are officially a new genre. Now to explain what all those words mean.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion Is Shinier

Even the logo is shiny!
We’ve not heard much about the Sins of a Solar Empire expandalone/quasi sequel Rebellion since it appeared on the radar back in March. Today though Stardock sent over a couple of images (below) showing how the graphical overhaul will shiny-up the ships from the original game to give the new game a good dose of polish. And they are at least 25% shinier, according to my Pixelshaderised shinometer. Of course Sins of a Solar Empire has been expanding and overhauling aplenty (and with stuff that matters to the game) since the 2007 release, and became far more interesting to play after the Diplomacy pack. Rebellion gets to build on this with new factions, new ships, and of course the whole rebellion theme – factions will be splinter off the main factions to create “rebel” and “loyalist” sub-factions, which in turn makes the conflict all the more hectic. With that and some AI improvements, well, we’ll be looking forward to it. Still no release date for Rebellion, but apparently it will be digital download only. Convenient for some, as Sins is now on Steam.
