Vacation Simulator is a sandy sequel to Job Simulator

Vacation-Simulatorheader

We should have seen this coming. Job Simulator devs Owlchemy Labs have announced Vacation Simulator, which brings the slapstick VR work ’em up to Vacation Island. Job Simulator was all about trying and failing to perform mundane tasks while being jeered at by robots, so Vacation Simulator will probably be about trying and failing to relax while being jeered at by robots. Don’t confuse that with the non-existent Vatican Simulator, which this news post was almost all about thanks to a typo.

You can soak up some virtual rays in the trailer below.

The 23 best VR games for PC

best-vr-games

Here they are then – the best games to play in virtual reality…and those games are “watching football,” “drinking”, “a nice cup of tea”, “fleeting emotional connection to another human being” and all those other everyday activities you believe to be real, as opposed than a simulation you have been experiencing since you first plugged your frail, mollusc-like form into a headset 19 years ago. SPOOKS!

But, should you persist in maintaining this fantasy, let’s go one level deeper and talk about the entertaining, satisfying or otherwise nifty games available for what is the current VR state-of-the-art in your imagined world: the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. The rival headsets are getting on for a couple of years old now, and in that time there’s been what can feel like a ceaseless storm of new games for them. How to choose, how to choose? Wot I Think: Job Simulator

Spring is tentatively Springing. The outside world is becoming more and more appealing. Yet I eschewed sunshine and the joyful company of my capering 2-year-old for what? Job Simulator [official site] is a cheerful satire of a possible future in which robots rule the world and recreate the boundlessly mundane human jobs of yesteryear for their own entertainment – but this cannot come close to the fundamental absurdity of what I am doing with a VR headset today. The future is here, and it’s bloody ridiculous.

Job Simulator Gets An Actual Game Mechanic

The future historians at Owlchemy Labs have painstakingly researched a fourth profession for their 2050-set virtual reality Job Simulator [official site]; that of Automotive Mechanic. I once had to fix the tyre on my bike* so I feel like I’m well qualified to judge how faithfully they’ve managed to recreate the experience. I’m going to say it’s pretty faithful, right down to the throwing things and the sriracha:

Hands-On: Job Simulator On Valve’s Vive VR Headset

The Vive overwhelmed me when I first tried it at GDC, but after playing through Valve’s hand-picked demos for a general sense of the VR headset, I went back for a second time to play more of Job Simulator [official site]. Of the game-like experiences I’ve had with the device, it was the best – better even than Valve’s own Portal 2 vignette.

Job Simulator: A Peek At One Of SteamVR’s First Games

Soon to be extinct

“There were once places beyond reach,” explains the chap hired to provide grandiose gravelly vocals on the overblown launch video for Valve’s virtual reality system, Vive.

“Sights unseen,” he adds as some guy dramatically takes an entire cosmic dustcloud to the face. “They called to us and let us hear. A world within ours – wild and without end. Welcome to a new reality.”

That new reality involves a slightly farty-sounding bottle of hot sauce being shaken over a virtual reality steak.
