The best games of E3 2018, from cyberpunks to twisters

cyberpunk-2077-interview-3

During this year’s E3, I saw the largest screen I’d ever witnessed, folded around the corner of a building like a giant piece of glowing paper. It told me to buy Nike. LA is already the neon futuretown of California, never mind Night City. But I didn’t just see ads for shoes at the LA convention centre, I saw a lot of games too. From the bustling streets of Cyberpunk 2077 to the twisting tornadoes of Just Cause 4. From the crumbling Capitol of The Division 2 to the clumsy motorcycling of Trials Rising. Here are my highlights from the game industry’s annual festival of bullets and colour, the sci-fi dystopia that was with us all along. Read the rest of this entry »

Avalanche: Just Cause 4 will not have multiplayer

Alas, Just Cause 4 will not include an official multiplayer mode, developers Avalanche Studios have said following the drive-o-fly-a-shoot-o-explode sandbox’s announcement at E3 this week. None of the previous games in the series have officially featured multiplayer, so it’s perhaps not wholly a surprise. However, sanctioned-yet-unofficial mods did add multiplayer to the past two games – and in 2016 Avalanche hired the lead developer of Just Cause 2’s multiplayer mod. But no, it seems there’ll only be one Rico Rodriguez blowing things up in JC4, not hundreds of hooligans romping all over. Read the rest of this entry »

Every PC game at Microsoft’s E3 2018 conference

Microsoft had a lot of games to announce at E3 2018, but it’s a little murkier this year to find out what was relevant for PC users. Some games were coming to both, others only to their Xbox One consoles. You could of course watch the entire conference right here, but for some there just isn’t enough time to wade through the entire show.

Not to worry though, here are all the trailers and news for you in one place. There’s a surprising amount of variety in the announced titles: from an old favourite making a return, much celebrated developers showing off their new series, to even a completely free game launching very soon. The games below aren’t in any particular order but you’re in for a long ride.

Just Cause 4 officially announced, shows wild weather

As if swinging from hostile helicopters on a grappling hook, gliding around on a wingsuit, and causing so very many explosions weren’t dangerous enough for Rico Rodriguez, in Just Cause 4 he’ll also be fighting through tornadoes, sandstorms, and blizzards. Publishers Square Enix today formally announced Avalanche Studios’ next explosive sandbox, surprising no one after recent leaks, and it looks nifty. The storms in Avalanche’s Mad Max were astonishing, and I’m certainly up for launching myself into a tornado. Watch the announcement trailer below. Read the rest of this entry »

Just Cause 4 confirmed in Steam leak

An apparent whoopsie on Steam has revealed the existence of Just Cause 4, in an advert, without anyone having announced any such game. So that’ll probably be something Square Enix plan to announce during their E3 press event on Monday. The ad is a simple picture which doesn’t reveal much but all I need to know is: our fella still has a wrist-mounted grappling hook; he’s still outside somewhere pretty; he still has guns; he still has a grenade launcher on a gun. Aye that’ll be Just Cause alright, more open-world sandbox shoot-o-grapple-a-destruction. Read the rest of this entry »
