It’s no secret that recent 3D reboot/sequel Yume Nikki: Dream Diary (an impressively redundant title) left fans of the quiet indie cult-hit exploration original disappointed, as well as our resident dream-delver Adam. A combination of mechanical missteps, technical problems and a much narrower range of environments and things to do with them left many cold.

Development of the game doesn’t seem to have slowed or stopped since its original release, however. Today, version 2.0 of the game rolled out, a major free update adding several more dream-worlds to explore, new things to do in them and apparently some new secrets to dig deep into.

RPG Maker spinoff Pixel Game Maker MV headed west

While some┬ámay roll their eyes at the very mention of RPG Maker, it’s hard to overstate just how influential the now-Kadokawa-owned development tool has been on the indie development scene. Just announced in Japan and due to be fully unveiled at Bitsummit in Kyoto tomorrow, Pixel Game Maker MV is already confirmed for a western release later this summer, and promises yet another alternative to the likes of Game Maker and Multimedia Fusion for budding game developers.

Yume Nikki: Dream Diary launches tomorrow

Time flies, eh? It feels like just a month ago that Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa announced a successor to minimalist indie adventure Yume Nikki, working in close collaboration with Kikiyama, mysterious developer of the original game, and it’s almost here already.

Oh. It was just a month ago.

Sneaking up on us like a particularly unsettling memory of a nightmare, Yume Nikki: Dream Diary is less than a day from release. Accompanying this news is a rather unsettling trailer, painting a somewhat darker picture of protagonist Madotsuki’s dreams than anything we saw first time round.
