Armello DLC Not Coming To GOG Version

This fella? Not on GOG.

Canny readers swagger up with a sneer to boast they’re not falling for it: “Rock, Paper, Shotgun hasn’t really been ‘PC gaming since 1873’. That’s not true. I’ve caught you out.” They’re right, of course – ‘RPS’ is a cheeky act of positive spin. In truth, we started in 1872 as Rock, Paper, We’re Getting On With Kieron Just Fine Okay. Following the inquest, we rebranded to Rock, Paper, Shotgun and found the cool edge we’d lacked.

The version of Armello [official site] sold on GOG is now called Armello DRM Free Edition. What that means is DLC released on Steam isn’t on GOG. Positive rebranding!

Cuddly Game Of Thrones: Armello Released

“Game of Thrones of Farthing Wood,” Marsh called Armello [official site], for its woodland friends and – oh no! – devious and violent scheming as our cutesy chums vie for control of the throne. He played the Early Access version back in January and thought it had promise. Well, we’ll see how the extra seven months of development have worked out for it, as Armello last night left Early Access and properly launched.

Premature Evaluation: Armello

“This is what the future of George Monbiot’s re-wilding policy looks like,” he typed, realising he would not be able to come up with a less obscure joke by his copy deadline.

Each week Marsh Davies sidles into the shadowy world of intrigue that is Early Access and comes back with any stories he can find and/or a knife in the back. This week, he plugs in his bunny tail and assassinates anthropomorphised animals with an umbrella in Armello, a digital boardgame of machiavellian power plays.

It would take an Australian developer, apparently not content with harbouring the most deadly creatures on the planet, to advocate giving swords to wolves. Real nice, Australia. Real nice. Why not put stilettos into the tiny claws of rats, while you’re at it? How about making bears into deadly wizards? Go on, give rabbits concealed blades disguised as parasols, why don’t you?

Then make them fight. Oh, you did? Oh.

Tabletop Stuff: Armello Looks Spellbinding

It’s testament to Armello that as someone with very little experience of board games, upon seeing it running I was immediately entranced. The tabletop-inspired PC game is a vividly alive and remarkably gorgeous turn-based hexxy strategy, that would normally be the sort of thing I’d walk right past. But when it was on display in GDC’s indie quarters this year, I not only didn’t walk right past, but stopped and stared and chatted for ages. And that’s not least because the game will offer a single-player role-playing adventure for soloists like me, as well as cross-platform (PC and eventually tablet) multiplayer for more sociable types. You can see it running below. Oh, and there’s a Kickstarter.
