Mavericks will have a 1000-player battle royale mode

The last time we saw Mavericks: Proving Grounds, developers Automaton said they were going to have 400 murderers running around in the forest hunting each other and tracking footprints with a deep bloodthirst. Now they are promising battles of 1000 players, fighting across 100 square miles of “deformable” terrain. These are big claims, yet to be proven, but at the PC Gaming Show during E3, they offered a brief “in-engine” trailer of what their large-scale firefights might look like. The battle royale of Mavericks is stalking a big game

A man in black scrambles through the overgrowth, looking lost. So I shoot him. Puffs of bloody air erupt from his body, but he runs on. Behind him something explodes from a stray bullet – my bulet or somebody else’s? I don’t know. But the man in black keeps moving, dodging behind some trees, over a ridge. Behind me, a wall of wobbly energy closes in. I give chase to the man in black, and we come face to face in a dirt glade with a tall, odd structure that might be a radio tower. I lift my MP5 submachine gun and mow him down. Soon afterwards, the game ends. I’ve won. I won’t claim my performance in the upcoming 400-person battle royale game Mavericks: Proving Grounds was a heroic victory. Because there were only 5 people playing. Mavericks: Proving Grounds talking 400-player battle royale at Rezzed

What do you get if you cross a video games show with a 400-player battle royale game? A newly-announced session at EGX Rezzed in April where a developer will gab about the upcoming Mavericks: Proving Grounds. The Plunk ’em up will use Improbable’s much-vaunted SpatialOS cloud server technology for fancy features like trackable persistent footprints and destructible buildings, so even if you’re not interested in battling royale you might enjoy nodding along and murmuring “Ah yes, building games in the sky, truly we live in the future.” Read the rest of this entry »

Mavericks: Proving Grounds is an FPS MMO with a 400 player battle royale mode

Imagine we’re trapped in a lift. If I started to pitch “400 player Playerunkown’s Battlegrounds” to you, would you scream and start clawing ineffectually at the doors – or gesture for me to continue, with a weary yet intrigued expression on your face? FPS MMO Mavericks: Proving Ground was revealed last Saturday, and it promises just that – with some fancy features powered by Improbable’s SpatialOS tech.

I’m intrigued by how the tech supports persistent environmental details: its what allows devs Automaton to implement trails of footprints and disturbed foliage that you can use to hunt other players. The 400 player battle royale mode will be out later this year, while the 1,000 player MMO is due for 2019. I’ve popped a rather stunning looking teaser-trailer below.
