Festive Bird Fancying In Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star

Did you kiss a bird last night? It’s okay, you can tell me. I know that you twitchers (and Twitchers, probably) have been camped out in your hides with your binoculars, keenly awaiting the arrival of Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star [official site]. You surely pounced on the bird dating sim as soon as it was released last night, so you don’t need me to tell you it’s out. But perhaps you’re not yet committed to a lifestyle of macking on finches – what would your family say at Christmas dinner! – so hey, look, I’ll just mention it’s out so you can think about it.

Festive Fancier: Hatoful Boyfriend – Holiday Star

There is no greater holiday romance than the one between George Michael and the wine glass he met last Christmas but for the pigeon fanciers among the RPS readership, Christmas might come early with the release of Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star [official site] on December 15th. It’s a themed expandalone or semi-sequel rather than a DLC pack and the creator of the original game, Hato Moa, has been involved with the development of this festive treat.

Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star Remaster Due In Autumn

np.

You may have thought yourself an animal lover before, but Hatoful Boyfriend taught us to really love animals. The dating sim starring a human girl in a school for birds – actual, proper birds – fizzed with madcap charm, and it was grand when Mediatonic and Devolver Digital remastered it to introduce it to a larger audience. Now they’ve having a crack at the sequel, Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star. This Christmassy tail [tail, like a bird’s tail] is due to arrive this autumn.

Wot I Think: Hatoful Boyfriend

At one point during the dating simulation game Hatoful Boyfriend, I found myself walking through a park with the guy I had a crush on as he confessed his profound grief over a lost love—how her absence had broken something deep in his heart that he might never be able to put back together.

The catch, of course, is that he wasn’t a “guy” at all; he was a bird. But here I was anyway, getting legitimately choked up over whether or not a quail was ever going to love again.

Hatoful Boyfriend Spreads Its Wings

“So the joke is it’s a dating simulator, but all the romance options are pigeons?” they’ll ask, bewildered. “Yes. Only it’s not really a joke. In fact, it got remade for a western audience because of how popular it was.” you can now reply, smiling a little too wide.

The world’s most popular pigeon dating simulator Hatoful Boyfriend is now out in a form that doesn’t require fan translation patches, if that’s your sort of thing. If you’re somehow uninitiated, it’s the tale of the only human student (you!) going to “St. PigeoNation’s Institute, a school for talented birds.” You’ll chat with and, presumably, up the other fine feathered students in search of true love.

HARDER FASTER PIGEONIER: Hatoful Boyfriend Remake

You didn’t play Hatoful Boyfriend? You didn’t? Look above these words. Behold your tragic error.

Whether the playing-it-straight pigeon-based high school dating sim/ visual novel needs a remake I don’t know. It was funny the first time and all that. But hell, better this than 90% of the kill-crazy bobbins that we’re going to see pumped down the vid-tubes for most of next week.

Impressions: Foul Play

Mediatonic’s theatrical brawler Foul Play opened its curtains yesterday on Steam. It’s a 2D beat ‘em up where you recount the character’s life on stage by punching actors. I’d intended to WiT it, but I’ve had to stop after a few hours play. There’s only so much button-mashing I can take in a day, and my thumbs were about to ask for the understudy to step-up. I refuse to play games with my feet. Instead you can have some Impressions. Onwards!

Have Some Wilde Brawls In Foul Play

There is a brilliant, subtle pun in Foul Play that took me way to long to figure out. Mediatonic’s cartoonish brawler is launching on PC today, and in it the Victorian daemon-hunter Baron Dashforth recounts his life story as a stage show. It is the Foul Play of the title, see? How that slipped past me I’ll never know. Perhaps I was too taken with the dashing and daring Baron as he refights his life for the audience’s approval, where how you fight is more important than simply winning.
