Wot I Think: Megaton Rainfall

Megaton Rainfall‘s goal is to let you feel like a superhero. Originally created with VR in mind, the earliest build I played years back on an Oculus Rift featured what still makes up the core of the game: swooping around via the gift of flight, trying to blow up alien ships while not accidentally levelling the city around you. Released now in flat-o-vision (I’ve no idea why the PC release is non-VR only, after the PSVR release last month), I find a game containing absolutely astonishing ambition, incredible achievements, beyond comprehension scale and awe, and the weirdest sense that you’re not really being allowed to have fun. Ram skyscrapers and blow up aliens in new Megaton Rainfall trailer

Megaton Rainfall

Megaton Rainfall [official site] will let you “become a supersonic indestructible interdimensional superbeing”. Which sounds alright, if you ask me. It’s a first-person superhero game in which you have to repel an alien invasion by firing energy missiles at them from your hands.

It was first announced back in 2015 – developer Pentadimensional Games has gone a bit quiet since but has popped up with a new trailer and a PS4 release date of 26 September. It sadly can’t be more specific for the PC release date than “later”. Hmph.

Hands On: Megaton Rainfall

Blowing shit up is a lot of fun. It’s an enormous amount of fun, in fact, which makes it strange that it’s so rarely offered in gaming. Destructible environments must be a royal pain in the arse for so many not to include them, meaning we need to hark back to the Red Faction series to remember the last time it was properly enjoyable. Step forward Megaton Rainfall [official site], which offers literally worlds filled with cities to damage. All in the name of thwarting an alien attack, obviously. I’ve had a play, and can confirm it’s looking like something pretty special.

First-Person Superheroics: Megaton Rainfall

Megaton Rainfall screenshot

Megaton Rainfall [official site] is a very promising-looking indie title. Oh my, does it look promising. I hope it delivers on its promise, I really do.

This is why: you play as a superhero, flying at high speed around enormous cities packed with skyscrapers and tiny people, defeating the aliens who are attempting to destroy every human construction in sight.
