Minecraft: Dungeons ascends the Howling Peaks with next month’s season pass

Hack 'n' slash 'n' mine 'n' crafter Minecraft: Dungeons is all kitted out for a winter of mountain climbing. The blocky dungeon-diver's next DLC, Howling Peaks, begins its expedition in just over two weeks - and with new baddies and bosses, it's not just vertigo you'll be watching out for. But Mojang have also stuffed a brand new season-pass into their backpack, for the square-headed…

Feature: All Copper Are Beautifuls

Let’s hear it for copper, Minecraft’s best new block

This afternoon, I've been mucking about with Minecraft's new 20w45a snapshot, which introduces the first tranche of goodies from the upcoming Cliffs & Caves update. And since closing the game, I've been sat here for a long hour, trying to think of something original or enlightening to say about it. It's not the game's fault. Last week was a heavy week, and I'm cooked. Cooked…

v1.17 Minecraft is getting even more complicated. However: axolotls.

So, as you might already know, there is another big Minecraft update on the way - version 1.17, a.k.a "Caves & Cliffs". As the name suggests, it's going to be focusing on the underground (with a lesser focus on mountains and such), and that's welcome news for long-time players. Especially since the Nether, Minecraft's weirdo hell dimension, got a makeover in version 1.16, it's become…

Here are three ways to turn Minecraft into a computer inside your computer

The more I see of Minecraft, the more I'm convinced that we all live in a simulation. Possibly one that's also inside Minecraft, and running some fancy shaders. I don't make that claim lightly. Like all conspiracy theorists, I have proof that you cannot dispute. Prepare yourself for a reality check. Below are some dazzlingly intricate pieces of computing, but rendered entirely inside Mojang's blocky…

How I nearly died on Minecraft’s title screen

As you may have seen already, the hillside lake shown on Minecraft's old title screen, which rotated slowly and blurrily between 2011 and 2018, has been located at last. The discovery of the world's seed is a whole story in itself, about how a group of people managed to deduce a single location from among the 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 worlds possible in Minecraft. That's about as many…

Minecraft’s new Piglin Brute mob is a solid 8/10 brute

I appreciate a good brute. I like the word itself, apart from anything else. It just sort of falls out of your mouth like a lead ball, that'll probably break your toe when it lands. It's a dim, mean-spirited word, like "fruit", but too preoccupied with simplistic violence to know how to spell itself. "Brute" has the same sort of mouthfeel as "dunce", "thud", "trudge"…

Minecraft Dungeons wakes up the jungle with its first DLC next week

Pack your mozzie spray and put on your hardiest boots, traveller. Minecraft Dungeons is preparing to take us into the undergrowth with its first DLC pack, Jungle Awakens. Arriving next Wednesday, the expansion is bringing some lush new levels, weapons, abilities and story missions to the block-busting dungeon crawler - along with a new dungeon, gear and balance changes in a free update that same…

Allow me to show you around my wonderful Minecraft house… in hell

I play Minecraft to build pleasing little houses, and so new block types are the most exciting things that can be added to the game, as far as I'm concerned. I'm pretty happy, then, as the new 1.16 "nether" update, which launched this week, has added loads. What's more, they're almost all found in the titular nether - Minecraft's weirdo hell dimension, which was pretty…

I honestly thought this Minecraft screenshot was just a photo of a laptop

For a game whose whole shtick was that you could make anything, so long as you didn't mind it looking blocky and pixellated, Minecraft sure has inspired a lot of people to attempt to make it look like reality. Last month, I checked out a city that's taken 400 people a decade to build, and which has now reached such a scale that you can…

Minecraft’s Nether Update is out today

The hellish hidden Minecraft region of the Nether becomes a whole lot more pleasant today with the launch of the Nether Update, focused on expanding the rarely-visited region. It brings four colourful and interesting new Nether biomes, new native residents and wildlife, giant fungus and other new flora, new music, new blocks, and more. Basically, the Nether is lively enough that you'll want to visit…

Minecraft is donating today’s profits to racial justice causes for Juneteenth

Profits from sales of Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons on digital stores today will be donated to several racial justice causes, in celebration of Juneteenth. The annual event on June 19th marks the day in 1865 that a Union army general formally announced to Texas that all Texan slaves were now free, and has grown to be celebrated countrywide. Mojang have also switched one of the…

Minecraft Dungeons is getting cross-platform multiplayer

I'm really enjoying Minecraft Dungeons, and my only real criticism of it right now is that there just aren't enough levels to explore. That won't be the case as of next month, however, because the game's first DLC, Jungle Awakens is dropping in July. On top of that, Mojang have announced they're working on bringing cross-platform multiplayer to Minecraft Dungeons, as well as a bunch…

Minecraft Dungeons has a secret cow level

In homage to one of the all-time action-RPG greats, Minecraft Dungeons has a secret level where you can fight herds of murderous cattle. Mojang's own action-RPG launched this morning, and folks have already discovered a nod to Diablo's infamous cow level, where wizards will be sent to mow down hordes of mooing mobs sprouting mushrooms. Killing cows: a cornerstone of the genre.

Feature: I mean, it worked with Illagers

5 Minecraft Dungeons features that should be in Minecraft

Minecraft Dungeons may have borrowed very little from its parent game in terms of features, sticking largely to the blockbuster construction game's aesthetics instead, but that's not to say it hasn't given plenty back. While Dungeons was being developed, according to executive director David Nisshagen in my interview with him, its team came up with illagers, a.ka. angry squidwards, in order to provide a staple…

Minecraft Dungeons is out now

Maybe there's not much Minecraft in Minecraft Dungeons, but there is a pretty decent action-RPG or so I hear. Mojang's click-click-click-click-clicking dungeon crawler launched today, with nary a block to mine or tree to punch but some weird and fun builds to experiment with. I'm up for an ARPG where one armour perk gives you a pet bat.

Minecraft Dungeons review

I knew Minecraft Dungeons was going to be fun when I played a couple of hours of the beta build last month. I knew this because, well, it was fun. It was the kind of fun you can fathom within about twelve seconds of starting a game, and the kind you know will be dependable in its simplicity, even if it might not last forever.…

400 people spent a decade building a 1:1 city in Minecraft

It just doesn't make sense. Until you fullscreen the image above and peer closely, noticing the flat tones on the buses and the blocky curve on the roadway, you wouldn't expect it to have come from a game more commonly used to build eye-hurting failure hovels from ugly cubes of cobblestone. But alas, this is a screenshot from Minecraft, and it is a view over…

A 105 Minute Documentary About Minecraft For No-Pennies

Minecraft: The Story Of Mojang was a 2011 crowd-funded documentary about Minecraft, featuring interviews with a host of big-name developers: Tim Schafer, Todd Howard, Chris Hecker, Peter Molyneux and some Swedish guy in a hat. Although he doesn't wear the hat much in this.General sentiment I heard was that, despite high production values and a fine roster of talking heads, it was perhaps too fluffy…
