The 10 most intriguing PC gaming trends of 2016

As December approaches like a runaway sled and we prepare to say our goodbyes to 2016, it’s natural to reflect on the year as a whole. Those reflections could easily take the form of laments but we’re keeping our focus firmly on the world of PC games, where we’ve identified ten trends that may not have defined 2016, but have certainly helped to shape it. We delve into Sorcery and synthwave, DOOM and Danganronpa, and much more besides.

Monday morning machinima: watch the Saxxy winners

What use are Saturday morning cartoons? Who’s even around to see those? Mate, what I need is Monday morning cartoons. Some short fun cartoons around 10 on my first day back at work sounds just the ticket. So come on, let’s enjoy the 2016 Saxxy Award finalists and winners. Valve unveiled this year’s finest Source engine machinima on Friday night after I’d already flicked a match into the RPS treehouse and walked away growling “See you in hell!” as it exploded behind me (I didn’t look, obvs – I felt the heat), which means they’re handily here for me today as I sit on the floor amongst ashes. Wot I Think: Mother Russia Bleeds

Living as we do, deep in the Age of Nostalgia, it’s easy to see why an old-school beat-em-up would appear out of the blue, complete with all the classic features – waves of enemies, four player co-op, destructible cars, weapons to pick up and throw at the bad guys. Devolver’s Latest Excess: Mother Russia Bleeds and Eitr

Too much desaturation? Too many games with numbers in the title? Too many military bottoms? Perhaps these two games from Devolver, publishers of cracked independent fare, will break through your ennui. I like the look of one and my roll my eyes into the back of my skull at the other, but I suspect a fair few of you will have entirely the opposite reaction.

Mother Russia Bleeds Is Hotline Miami Meets Beats Final Fight

Looks like, um, quite the establishment

I’m not sure if Mother Russia Bleeds will set the world on fire, but it sure looks cool. It’s a beat-’em-up that I can verify with utmost certainty contains Russia and sloshing, spattering gallons of blood. Maybe there are mothers as well, but I can’t say for sure just yet. What I do know is that this one looks stylish as all get-out and violent as all something else, because they already used up every last drop of get-out on the style. The Hotline Miami influence is pretty overt, what with all the drug usage, psychedelic imagery, and adoration of the color pink. Impressive (and frighteningly violent) trailer below.
