So, this video is just 12 minutes and 54 seconds of one of the Nexuiz developers running around a shiny FPS arena commenting on the guns and how the game plays. But its simplicity is the perfect way of presenting the equally simplistic online shooter they’re making: a game where the focus is fast, fluid killamajigging still has a place in my dark, dark heart, and Nexuiz is just that. It has a sticky mortar gun that fires a globby explosive at an enemy that detonates after a few seconds: I like watching people panic, because I’m actually not a very nice person. Video, ho!

Ooh, I’ve come overall military. Let me try that again: “I don’t know what I’ve been told, Spec Ops: The Line is out June 29th”. Ah, military cadence is a wonderful medium for delivering game news. The Dubai set Gears of War-ish shooter that Adam liked but I have concerns about is taking advantage of the sweltering heat of summer and potential beach holidays. Imagine, an entire marketing campaign claiming to have brought about sand and sun. There’s also a multiplayer video that shows off the perks of pre-ordering, below.

I’m in two minds about this multiplayer shooter from the ORION: Prelude team that somehow isn’t ORION: Prelude. Is ORION: Dino Beatdown a brilliant name for a game, or is it a horrible name for anything? One thing I do know, despite the laudable presence of dinosaurs and jetpacks, I’d be a lot happier if the dinosaurs were actually using the jetpacks. As it is, this is a game of cooperative shooting in which teams of men must survive in massive environments populated by hordes of hungry monster-lizards. And despite my quibbling, it looks pretty damn good.
What better way to start a Monday than with a new trailer for the “reimagining” of Nexuiz, an arena-based shooter that aims to resurrect warm memories of killing friends in improbable environments? Maybe a preferably beginning would be a stroll through Montmartre, ending with a fresh coffee by the Seine as conversations erudite and elegant intermingle with the aroma of freshly baked bread? Unfortunately, that’s not going to be happening, so instead let’s all feast our faces on a short video that demonstrates some of the many mutators on offer in IllFonic’s ill-titled slice of deathmatchery.
Gotham City Impostors, the bonkers-looking multiplayer from Monolith, has had a bit of a slip, presumably due to the icy weather. According to a press release (or “media alert” as a troubling number of people are now saying when saying their game has a new picture, etc), the 11th January release isn’t going to happen. In fact, it now gets no more specific than “February”, which is rarely a great sign, but could mean they’re hedging their bets.

Perhaps not the most catchy of names, Nexuiz has just been announced as receiving a publishing deal from THQ Partners and Machinima. And thus into the public gaze it heads. IllFonic’s CryEngine 3 game is an FPS “reimagining” of the game’s previous incarnation when released by Alien Trap in 2005. Then it was intended to be a GPL shooter, free to play, and free software, available on PC, Mac and Linux. Original designer, Forest Hale, has moved over to IllFonic for the project, currently suggested to cost $10 on release, which we can probably assume won’t be equally as Free with Crytek’s code underneath. And it’s a properly mind-bending concept.
KarBOOM is a bitesize freeware treat about some lovely little cars indulging in a spot of sumo wrestling on a high plateau above a bottomless drop. It supports internet and local multiplayer, the latter a ridiculous attempt in trying to fit four desperate hands on one keyboard, each sweating to control the adorable wind up bumper cars as they fight their way through a bevvy of game mutators that work much in the same way as Unreal Tournament handles things.
