Mushroom 11 Sprouts On October 15th

Designer Itay Keren set out to create a game where the character you control never actually moves. The result is Mushroom 11 [official site], a puzzle-platformer about steering a mass of cells through a level by destroying those on one side to cause them to re-grow on the other. The game is now finally being released next month on October 15th – which, it turns out, is National Mushroom Day. Watch the launch trailer below.

Humongous Fungus: A Mushroom 11 Trailer

The few times Mushroom 11 has popped up on my radar, I really didn’t know what I was looking at. There was some talk about shape-shifting fungus, but it all looked a bit formless in the early tech. A smarter man would use that last sentence as a segue, but I am far too dim to link the phase ‘formless’ and the action in Mushroom 11, where you’re a growing mass of mushroom that you have to trim and shape to move through the levels: each cut and slice allows you to grow on. There’s an interesting little puzzle game in all this, and the trailer has spread below the cut.

The 2013 GDC Experimental Gameplay Workshop

An undoubted highlight of GDC every year is the Experimental Gameplay Workshop. Despite having that complete nonsense word in the title, it’s a chance for some of the most innovative and esoteric gaming ideas to be shared with one of the week’s biggest audiences, whether in development, released, or some impossible state in between.
