VR robo-stealth ’em up Budget Cuts sneaks out at last

Budget_Cuts_header

Here’s what marks Budget Cuts as a cut above other VR funtimes: it’s been 20 minutes since I took my cybergoggles off and I still sort of feel like I’m in VR. That used to happen all the time when I first got my Vive, but my brain’s since learned to tell the difference between the real and the virtual. Budget Cuts, though, feels so much like embodying a physical space that it’s short circuited whatever tolerance I’d built up.

That’d be impressive enough on its own, but developers Neat Corporation have also filled that space with teleportation guns, terrifying robots and jokes. Their robo-stealth ’em up is finally out, and I’d be surprised if it doesn’t end up being the best VR game of this decade. Read the rest of this entry »

Ace VR stealth ’em up Budget Cuts budged back again

I had a little VR party on the day I got my Vive, and my guests all regarded the Budget Cuts demo as the highlight. That’s partly because it felt slick and stylish in a way that hasn’t been matched by anything I’ve tried since, but mostly because watching VR newbies fail to sneak past robots is the most fun you can have with a pair of cyber goggles. I still vividly remember one friend getting so startled that he froze rock solid, spent a second doing terrified jazz hands, then crumpled straight to the floor. It might have been the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

The full version of Budget Cuts was originally meant to come out “soon” after that demo did back in 2016. Then it was meant to come out at the start of this month, and then it was meant to come out today. Turns out it’s actually (well, probably) going to come out in “approximately 1-2 weeks”, because developers Neat Corporation aren’t quite happy with it yet. Read the rest of this entry »

6 exciting VR games we saw at GDC

The blessed boys and girls of Valve were showing off some VR games for the upcoming Vive Pro at the Game Developers Conference last week. They were encamped near the press room in a large chamber split up into little shacks, each running a game such as the robot-avoiding comedy stealth of Budget Cuts, or the sunbathing relaxation of Vacation Simulator. I went on a rapidfire journey through this shantytown of virtual reality, jacking into game after game, each lasting about 20 minutes. The results: this round-up, and an intense visual migraine that rendered me incapable of reading for a full 5 minutes. I’m being serious. I thought I was having a stroke.

But enough about visual anomalies that float around the inside of your eye like a terrifying optical aurora, let’s talk videogames. Here are the strange worlds I entered and all the ways in which I tried to undermine the developers from inside their own game. Sorry, VR fans!

Virtual Reality Sneak ‘Em Up Budget Cuts Looks Ace

I’m not sold on virtual reality, but I am certainly interested in hiding in vents and lobbing knives at robots’ faces. That’s Budget Cuts [official site], a first-person stealth game coming to Valve and HTC’s Vive space-sensing cybergoggles. Imagine, if you can, reaching out into a virtual world with your own hands and… dunking a dead robot into a bin. That future is almost here. Observe:
