The Overwatch League is back tonight, but missing many of the staff who made last season so excellent

The Overwatch League is back tonight for its second season, seeing 20 teams face off in an attempt to be crowned the ultimate champions. Will the London Spitfire manage to repeat their successes? Can anyone stop the powerhouse that is the New York Excelsior? Will the Shanghai Dragons finally net their first win? It all kicks off at 4pm PST/12am GMT, and you can watch…

Know It OWL: Goat herding in the Overwatch League

The Overwatch League is finally back tomorrow*! Before that, though, we've got plenty to cover: a turbulent preseason showing, last minute player issues, and a look at the most exciting upcoming games. First, though, we’ve got to talk about Goats.

Know It OWL: Previously on the Overwatch League

The Overwatch League is a complicated thing. Who could be expected to keep track of 20 teams with nearly 200 players, playing 16 games per week using 29 heroes? Well, this freelance lifestyle has to be good for something, and that something is going to be synthesising the whole thing down into weekly bite-sized pieces for you, dear reader. So hi! Welcome! We’ve got some…

Unofficial Overwatch tournament will test out a hero ban system

Whether or not the Overwatch League should implement hero bans has been a hot topic among fans and professionals lately. Those who are behind the approach believe it'll mix up a stale meta, but it's hard to say for sure until we see it in action. Luckily, some players will be taking it for a test drive (albeit unofficially) in tonight’s Tournament of Future Champions,…

Overwatch Contenders controversy has once again made things more difficult for women in esports

Late last year, tier two professional Overwatch team Second Wind announced that they’d signed a female player. The woman, who went by the tag “Ellie” but kept much of her identity private, was lined up to be one of very few to play in Overwatch Contenders. Though many were excited to see some variety in the male-dominated scene, Ellie was immediately subjected to harassment, including…

The Overwatch League’s Hangzhou Spark know how to brand themselves

Since the Overwatch League announced eight new expansion teams for season two, there’s only been one question on everyone’s mind: what colours will they use? At first, it seemed they were all going to be duds, falling back on the sea of blues and reds already dominating the matches. The Chengdu Hunters did something interesting with their yellow kit, but nothing can match the most…

The Overwatch League’s city-based ambitions finally make sense to me

The Overwatch League has been busy in its off-season, announcing eight new teams that will join the competition when it starts back up again in January. Like the 12 that came before them, each will bear the name of a city: Paris, Guangzhou, Vancouver, and so on. But, for now, they’ll continue to play entirely from Blizzard’s arena in Burbank, California, with no real connection…

The Overwatch League will add eight new teams in season two

The Overwatch League has been experiencing a pretty dramatic shake-up of late, with beloved players like Brandon "Seagull" Larned and Heo "Gambler" Jin-woo retiring to focus more on streaming, and some teams axing virtually their entire rosters (pour one out for the Shanghai Dragons and the Florida Mayhem). But it’s not all loss – today the League announced six new teams that will join the…

Overwatch World Cup hopeful xQc suspended for abusive chat

Popular Overwatch livestreamer and ex-Dallas Fuel professional player Félix ‘xQc’ Lengyel was handed a 15-day suspension from Overwatch yesterday, after being repeatedly reported for abusive chat. This is only the latest in a long line of disciplinary actions taken against the player, who is scheduled to appear for team Canada in the Overwatch World Cup next month.

Competitive Overwatch rebuilds around Wrecking Ball

The Overwatch League might be in its off season, but competitive Overwatch rumbles on with the Contenders tier entering its playoff stages. Controversially, these playoffs have been taking place on an updated patch, introducing huge changes for players to adapt to, including the newest hero, Wrecking Ball, and the new version of Symmetra. Teams haven’t had a lot of time to practice with the new…

Overwatch League fans are designing their own dream teams

Header image by Twitter user Jp3ilson. The Overwatch League’s franchising is a little weird. Supposedly a global league, the teams are overwhelmingly “based” in American cities – and I use scare quotes there because really all the teams live and compete in Los Angeles during the season and none draw from local players. But that hasn’t stopped fans from wanting their cities to be represented,…

What makes an Overwatch MVP?

When the Overwatch League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award was handed to Jjonak of the New York Excelsior, no one was really surprised. His Zenyatta play has undoubtedly been immensely valuable; a key factor in New York’s impressive 34-6 win-loss ratio. The amount of damage he deals far outstrips every other Zenyatta player in the League, and often that of DPS players, too – all…

England won a thing!

If you're still licking your wounded pride after England stacked it in the World Cup, take solace in the news that an English team have won Blizzard's first professional Overwatch season. At the Overwatch League Grand Finals in New York over the weekend, London Spitfire--a team whose name could only be more mawkishly English if it were Sir Percy Brexitworth And The D-Day 1966ers--lifted the…

Overwatch League to be covered on ESPN

American sports television network ESPN are to cover Blizzard's Overwatch League playoffs and grand finals, the end of the competition's first season, as well as planning to cover the next. I'm always fascinated when mainstream sports media peer over our fence and say "Ooh! That looks fun!" then face the impossible task of pleasing both game fans and channel surfers, so it'll be interesting to…

The Overwatch League must take burnout seriously

The Shanghai Dragons are still yet to win an Overwatch League game. In response to some fan’s concerns about this record, their manager, Yang Van, released a statement on the subject – but it ended up being less than reassuring. He explained that the Dragons "have the most intensive training scheme among all the teams... Our daily schedule starts at 10:30am as we leave for…

Clickuorice Allsorts: burnout in the Overwatch League

As Blizzard's Overwatch League nears the end of its first season, Nicole Carpenter on Dot Esports takes a look at the "blurred line between work and play" and the stresses and strains it has placed upon players. With at least one team working 70-odd hour weeks, some players are experiencing mental and physical exhaustion, burning out before even the first season's done. Blizzard are experimenting…

Being a fan of esports’ pioneering women is complicated

It’s two o’clock in the morning and I’m watching the Overwatch League stadium erupt for Kim "Geguri" Se-yeon. As the camera pans down the line-up of her team, the Shanghai Dragons, it’s always her that gets the loudest cheer, and by a wide margin. Because she’s a fantastic off-tank and because she’s one of the new additions that have so greatly improved the (admittedly still…

Dress as your favourite esports team in Overwatch

If dressing Overwatch heroes up as bees, firefighters or David Bowie tributes isn't enough for you, then I've got good news - from the start of next year, you'll be able to don the colours of your favourite esports team. Blizzard have announced that the custom team skins available for each team competing in the Overwatch League will also be available for their supporters, though…
