Overwatch adding deathmatch to Arcade lineup

Deathmatch is finally coming to Overwatch [official site] as a side mode. For players who simply want to run around shooting people, paying no heed to any objectives, free-for-all and team deathmatch modes are being added to the Arcade lineup of rotating game modes. Oh sure, do it now, Overwatch has only suffered a year of those jerks ignoring the objective. Some existing maps have been modified for deathmatch, and Blizzard have purpose-made a new deathmatch map set in Widowmaker’s family estate in France. Deathmatch isn’t properly live yet but is on the public test servers so you can have a go today. Read the rest of this entry »

Overwatch Summer Games event returns with new skins

Last summer, the whole gang in Overwatch [official site] got swept up by Olympics excitement, celebrating by wearing sporting apparel and playing football. Without the pageantry of the Olympics to unite everyone this year, Blizzard’s summer event now celebrates the two camps of people outside in the scorching sun: those who are seriously into sports, and those who just want to hang out and have a barbecue. Yup, the 2017 Overwatch Summer Games are here, bringing back Lúcioball with a new ranked competitive mode, and adding more outfits for Overwatchers to just chill. Read the rest of this entry »

Lúcioball heads back to Overwatch, brings new and old summer skins

Overwatch Summer Games 2016

The Overwatch [official site] Summer Games are returning to PC (and some other platforms WHATEVER we don’t speak of them) on 8 August. It’s a pretty meaningful date, what with it being the 141st anniversary of Thomas Edison’s mimeograph patent being received and the 1900th anniversary of the death of Trajan. What would Blitzball Blernsball Lúcioball be without mimeographs and mourning Trajan? Nowhere. That’s where. Read the rest of this entry »

Doomfist now deep into Overwatch

Doomfist is now fully, properly, really inside Overwatch [official site]. For ages the character has teased Blizzard’s FPS, with hints and traces and teasers buzzing past, as if he were waving his robofist in our face while repeating “Is this bugging you? I’m not touching you. Is this bugging you?” Earlier this month, he upgraded to “I’m just holding my fist here and if you walk into it that’s your fault” status by arriving on the test servers. And yesterday, Doomfist finally slammed into our faces, splitting our lips, splintering our teeth, tickling our tongues, and keeping on down into our guts. The patch officially adding the villainous new character to Overwatch is now live, I mean. Read the rest of this entry »

Overwatch increasing punishments for naughtiness

Asses, blaggards, bleeders, blighters, bounders, brutes, cads, cheats, fannies, jackasses, jagoffs, jeb ends, knaves, loudmouths, ne’er-do-wells, nobheads, nuisances, prats, pricks, rascals, radges, rats, reprobates, rogues, rotters, and scoundrels beware: Blizzard are increasing punishments in Overwatch [official site].

“Play nice; play fair” is one of their main rules, they say, and flipping flipfaces are spoiling things. So from now on, they’re increasing penalties for bad behaviour, and they’re planning to expand their disciplinary systems. One such planned change is issuing notifications for when people you’ve reported get punished. Internet justice! Read the rest of this entry »

Doomfist punches into Overwatch proper next week

After several weeks beating the bag on the Overwatch test servers, new character Doomfist is almost ready to start pounding faces properly. The villain will arrive next Thursday, July 27th, Blizzard announced this week. If you prefer not to tamper with test servers and unfinished bits, you might want to meet Doomfist in this here video: Read the rest of this entry »

Seven Overwatch League teams confirmed across US and Asian cities

Overwatch D.Va

Blizzard has announced the first seven teams to take part in the Overwatch League [official site], the game’s official eSports league that’s due to launch later this year.

The teams will represent cities, almost like football teams, and will be owned by a mix of eSports guys and traditional sports business giants, including the head honcho at current NFL champions the New England Patriots. Yep, Overwatch is big business.

Why Overwatch’s newest map has made me fall in love with its least popular hero

I really struggled with my first few outings in Overwatch’s new map, Horizon Lunar Colony. When my team was defending it seemed all too easy for the attackers to roll over us, especially on the first of two capture points, which has a wide-open approach and lots of entrances. I didn’t know which way to look. When I was attacking, I kept getting picked off from long distance, dying in the halfway house between safe cover and the point itself. It was rubbish, I thought. Badly designed.

I was wrong. Read the rest of this entry »

Overwatch slams in new character Doomfist

The dastardly Doomfist is finally arriving in Overwatch [official site], now playable on the test realm after yonks of teasing. He’s one of the baddies in Blizzard’s FPS, a man who has a robot arm and is jolly annoyed because a monkey put him in prison and… that doesn’t matter. He is a new character, and he is here, able to shoot from his knuckles and punch things mightily. Meet him in this new trailer: Read the rest of this entry »

Moonshot: Overwatch’s Horizon Lunar Colony map’s live

MOON MOON MOON

Overwatch‘s [official site] moon arena, Horizon Lunar Colony is now live. The assault map’s origin story is all about exploration and science and all of that kerfuffle which sounds so grand and optimistic. Nowadays (i.e. in the future-present of Blizzard’s FPS-iverse) it is a contested set of facilities where heroes mangle one another with lasers.

On the negative side that feels less grand and optimistic. On the positive side, it means that universe has the technology to send people to the moon all the time. Read the rest of this entry »

Bang! Zoom! Straight to the new Overwatch map which is set on the Moon

Overwatch [official site], aka the one you still think about when you fall asleep at night even though you are in a happy relationship, is getting a new map. It’s set on the moon. According to the increasingly tangled folklore of the multiplayer hero shooter, the Horizon Lunar Colony is where tanky gorilla Winston comes from. It’s an assault map and, although most of it will be grounded and normal, there are parts of the map where you can prance about in low gravity. But come down here to see what the map itself looks like.

Overwatch celebrates birthday with new loot, game sale

Genji

In case any of you were keeping an eye out for a price dip during which to pick up Overwatch [official site] there’s one happening right now. It’s part of a seasonal event celebration which is essentially a three-week birthday party for the game and involves a weekend trial and new digital loot like anniversary skins and three new arena maps.

I don’t know about you but I definitely like to celebrate my birthday by spending the best part of a month sloughing off my old skin to reveal a shiny new look and some emotes. It’s what we millennials do instead of jelly and ice cream nowadays. I also Instagram the whole thing, my iridescent scales falling photogenically into my flat white, the little buds of my newly grown ears peeking out from behind the old ones and ripening over a series of selfies… Read the rest of this entry »

Overwatch’s D.Va stomps into Heroes of the Storm

Mech-piloting, Dorito-munching pro gamer D.Va has joined the cast of Blizzard’s free-to-play crossover MOBA Heroes of the Storm [official site], arriving just a few weeks after Genji. If you know her from Overwatch, you largely know how she works in HotS, because abilities translate fairly directly between the two class-based games. She stomps around in a mech which has shields and boosters and which she can set to self-destruct as a bomb, and she can scamper about on foot popping people with her pistol. Here, have a look in this trailer: Read the rest of this entry »

The 23 best bite-size games for busy lives

I am dad, hear me whinge. Too many games, not enough spare time, for all my non-work hours are spent kissing grazed knees, explaining why you cannot eat the food in that cupboard, constructing awful Lion King dioramas out of toilet roll tubes and being terrified that the next jump from the sofa to the armchair will go fatally wrong. I’m lucky in that my job to some extent involves playing games, so by and large if there’s something I really want to check out I can find a way to, but I appreciate that there are many long-time, older or otherwise time-starved readers for whom RPS is a daily tease of wondrous things they cannot play.

Now, clearly I cannot magically truncate The Witcher 3 into three hours for you, but what I can do is suggest a few games from across the length and breadth of recent PC gaming that can either be completed within a few hours or dipped into now and again without being unduly punished because you’ve lost your muscle-memory. Heroes of the Storm gets Overwatchier in v2.0

Overwatch cyberninja Genji has arrived in Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm [official site] and the mech-piloting digital sports superstar D.Va is soon to follow. To give them somewhere familiar to scrap, the free-to-play crossover MOBA’s update 2.0 has added a map based on Overwatch’s Hanamura level. HotS 2.0 also reworks the player progression and loot system, and brings an event with crossover rewards in both HotS and Overwatch (including, oddly, a D.Va cop outfit for Overwatch). Oh, and all players are receiving enough virtuacash to unlock a bundle of twenty characters for free. Those busy Blizzees! Here, watch what Genji is all about: Read the rest of this entry »

Leaky leak: Overwatch’s next event is PvE Insurrection Uprising

Update: Past Brendan, you fool! It’s actually called ‘uprising’ in English and now has a trailer in that language, available via super-legit sources, and contains all these goodies.

Original story:Il y a eu une fuite!” That means “There has been a leak” in French, a language which I am now speaking because a trailer for the next Overwatch [official site] event has seeped out onto the French YouTube channel for PlayStation. It’s called Insurrection and pits four characters against waves of Omnic robots on the streets of King’s Row. And it’s due to start tomorrow. Here’s the video, which was taken down by the official channel once they realised their slip-up but has – surprise, surprise – been hastily copied by enterprising Tubefiends.

Inside earns 4 awards as BAFTA winners announced

Eerie puzzle platformer Inside [official site] has nabbed four awards as the winners of this year’s videogame BAFTAs were announced at the annual ceremony in London. Firewatch and Overcooked were also lathered with attention, winning two awards each. But some skinny bum in a dirty shirt called ‘Nathan’ took home the Best Game award for something called Uncharted 4, which is, like, probably not even that cool, chuh.

Blizzard due $8.5 million in legal battle with botmakers

A company who make and sell cheats for Blizzard games including Overwatch, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft must pay Blizzard over $8.5 million, a US court has ruled. This is the latest development in Blizzard’s battle with cheaty botters Bossland, which has so far spanned five years, the courts of several countries, and even more cases. This latest ruling says that, along with paying up, Bossland are ordered to stop selling their software in the US as it “circumvents technological measures that control access to Blizzard’s games”. Other cases are still ongoing, mind. Read the rest of this entry »

Overwatch map editor is a long-term goal for Blizzard

Blizzard do hope to one day add a map editor to Overwatch, but you shouldn’t expect it any time soon. That’s the word from game director Jeff Kaplan, who says there’s a lot of technical work between now and this future dreamtime. Overwatch has started dabbling in kinda-sorta mods, with the confusingly-named Server Browser letting players fiddle with game settings enough to essentially create new modes, and a map editor would be a welcome addition. I’m guessing it’d take, what, two days for Overwatch’s first DE_Dust remake? Three for CP_Dustbowl?

In other Overnews, patch 1.9 is due to launch today, adding new character Orisa. Read the rest of this entry »

BAFTA noms: Inside, Firewatch, Dishonored 2, Overwatch

Although the Britain of tomorrow will be merely the county of Kent surrounded by 100-foot high razor wire, I am confident that the BAFTAs will endure forever. Long-established and highly coveted by the black tie crowd, they’re one of those award shows which tend to reward the already successful, which can make them rather safe and predictable. Still, bar a deluge for PS4 system-seller Uncharted 4, this year’s crop of nominations isn’t quite as staid as it might have been.

The darkly delicious platform adventure Inside [official site] is the PC title that scores the most winks. I can get behind that (though John very much would not), but it’s good to see the likes of ABZU, Stardew Valley, EVE Online and Hitman nominated, alongside the more predictable likes of Dishonored 2, Firewatch and Overwatch. Mind you, I think pretty much every game that pierced public consciousness last year has some kind of nod here.
