Star Trek Online expands into the Age Of Discovery and overhauls progression

I liked Star Trek: Discovery, and reckon that Mary Wiseman's performance as Sylvia Tilly stole the show so I'm rather chuffed to see that both have been beamed up into Cryptic's free-to-play Star Trek Online. Rolled out yesterday, the Age of Discovery expansion features that slightly gritty Nu-Trek look, a series of new quests to do at the behest of Cadet Tilly (voiced by Wiseman)…

Torchlight Frontiers trailer shows steampunk mechs, exploding goblins and a tiny train

Announced two weeks ago, we're finally getting our first peek at how co-op action RPG Torchlight Frontiers looks in motion. While there's still some big talk about the game being a "shared world" that new developers Echtra Games have yet to explain, the new trailer looks enough like Torchlight 2 to me, which is all I'm looking for in a sequel like this.  Take a peek…

Torchlight Frontiers taking action-RPG to ‘shared world’

Perfect World Entertainment today announced a new game in the action-RPG series Torchlight, nine months after shutting down the studio which created it. But some scraps of Runic Games have survived to make Torchlight Frontiers, as this new one is named, including Runic co-founder Max Schaefer and other unnamed former Torchlight folks at his new studio, Echtra Games. Weird. What a weird situation. Torchlight Frontiers…

Darksiders 3 devs announce co-op shooter Remnant

Gunfire games really like their post-apocalyptic hellscapes, huh? Not content with just developing Darksiders 3, they're diversifying their end-of-the-world portfolio with Remnant: From The Ashes, a third-person co-op "survival-action" shooter. Squads of up to four wander the "dynamically-generated" ruins of civilisation, shooting holes in a horde of invading tree-demons called The Root. Below, a moody and shooty announcement trailer.

Neverwinter goes gothic with a new Ravenloft expansion

Cryptic's free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons-lite MMO Neverwinter is one of those fun-looking games that I've only found the time to sink a couple hours into. As such, I'm a little jealous of the folks playing through some of the game's newer high-level modules, including a jaunt through the Underdark and a recently added jungle filled with undead dinosaurs. This week's module - the fourteenth to be added…

Star Trek Online boldly goes back to Deep Space Nine

Well, there's one way to remind me that I'm getting older: tell me that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is 25 years old. Despite also being 8 years old, Free-to-play MMO Star Trek Online is still looking pretty good, all things considered. The TV show's anniversary today marks the launch of its first major expansion in some time, delivered as a free update. Victory Is Life brings us back…

A big, big loss: farewell to Gigantic, the moba-shooter from Starcraft’s lead designer

The cosmic ballet continues: just as MOBAs replaced MMOs in the popular consciousness, now battle royale games are flavour of the year, and sadly that, together with general multiplayer market saturation, means casualties. Not even a week ago, Epic's MOBA/shooter hybrid Paragon faced the axe, and now that same is true of Gigantic. Motiga's monstery multiplayer game was another lane-runner/face-shooter combo, and one whose development…

Torchlight studio Runic shut down, Gigantic devs also almost closed

The owners of Torchlight developers Runic Games, the Chinese free-to-play-focused publisher Perfect World Entertainment, confirmed today that it has shut down Runic's Seattle studio. Seeing as that's Runic's only studio, er, that's them basically gone - though their games will live on. This comes barely one month after Runic released Hob. Perfect World have also laid off most the team at Motiga, the studio behind…

Destroy all monsters! Gigantic released

Gigantic, the free-to-play multiplayer brawl-o-shooter where each team has the support of a honking great monster, has left early access and launched in full. It offers class-based 5v5 fisticuffs, and did I mention the big monsters? Matches climax with the two bigguns scrapping, see, each team trying to help their megafriend out. It's a bit MOBA-y, but what isn't nowadays? Here, have a look in…

Cryptic are making a Magic: The Gathering MMORPG

Cryptic Studios, the creators of superhero MMORPG City of Heroes, are making a free-to-play "action MMORPG" [official site] based on Wizards of the Coasts' mega-hit collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Publishers Perfect World Entertainment, who announced the game this week, don't have a name for it yet, they don't have anything to show of it (all the artwork in this post is from cards),…
