What are we all playing this weekend?

With E3 finally out of my system (though I know our Brendy is still writing odds and ends about games he saw), Gamescom has jerked violently into my sphere of awareness. Slow down! We’re fine. We’re good. With over a month to go, I might even recover from E3’s sleep loss in time. I like Gamescom, and not just because it’s close to my timezone and focuses more on the weird PC games you’d expect at a German show – though obviously I am a sucker for job simulators. I feel we’re so close to seeing another breakout hit like American Truck Simulator, though sadly Bus Simulator 18 hasn’t quite proven to be that game (not that it’s bad, mind).

If wishes were horses, cockroaches would… ride rats? Summer’s reaching that point where stuff just happens, strange and incomprehensible stuff, and all you can do is nod and say “Okay then” as a dozen lads the colour of boiled lobsters chase an inflatable crocodile down the road singing Ace of Base. Summer: if you can make sense of it, you’re weren’t there.

Alice is on holiday, which means it falls to me to tell you what the endlessly expanding RPS team are playing this weekend. It still falls to you to tell everyone what you’re playing, however. Let’s get started, because it’s going to take me ages to sort out all the fiddly HTML for all these new people.

And that was the E3 that was. It’s been a busy week but a good’un. My exhausted brain will blank out most of this week so I look forward to discovering everything anew in a month or so. But I’ll never forget the most important E3 news of all: Yakuza is coming to PC. Oh, and Cyberpunk 2077 sounds wild. And that Grim Fandango read-through was grand. And Pey’j! And shark ’em up Maneater looks delightfully daffy. And… obviously at this point I am reading back through our E3 tag and being surprised by all these games I had already forgotten. I’ll be on holiday next week so I’ll see youse laters.

After a week of leaks, confirmations, trailers, and announcements, somehow it still isn’t E3 yet. The video game industry’s main marketing-o-press-a-rama officially starts on Tuesday, though most of the exciting stuff happens before the expo in Los Angeles even opens. EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, and Devolver Digital have their press conferences this weekend, which will of course be livestreamed for all to see, then more will follow on Monday (not to forget Nintendo on Tuesday, who are always a delightful palate cleanser even if not RPS-relevant). Anyway! Enough about futuregames.

Has E3 started? Maybe E3 has started. The games industry’s marketing megablast unofficially begins earlier and runs longer every year, and if the announcement of Rage 2 in mid-May wasn’t the start, Ubisoft confirming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey after word of the game leaked via some promo tat surely was. Expect more leaks, teasers, rumours, and daftness as we lead up to the official start of the unofficial start with publishers’ press conferences next weekend. It’s a hectic time of year for me but ah, I do half-enjoy seeing what my brain does when it breaks over a seemingly endless week of ludicrous hours. Full of surprises, that skullful of slop.

Another long weekend? What a treat! We’re off on Monday then will be back in full force on Tuesday. Bank holidays are traditionally times to visit the seaside, or sit in honking motorway queues headed towards the seaside at least, so I assume that’s what we’re all up to. But bookending that, video games, yeah?

With Eurovision out the way (it had too many ballads and not enough poppy pop, but Moldova’s staging was a delight), it’s almost time for The Other E: E3. The other Es? The Electronic Entertainment Expo. That good ol’ close-mid front unrounded vowel x 3. To the max. As tired as I always feel after a week of working long days starting from Saturday, writing so very many posts, and watching too many awkward presentations, I do still find it quite exciting. From afar, mind. God, I’ve never been to E3 and hopefully I never will. But the PRODUCTBLASTORAMA is still quite exciting. I’m predicting a lot of dads and royale battles this year. Maybe even combined. Daddle royale.

Gang, it’s almost here, the big E, the event we’ve waited for all year: Eurovision. More than the Olympics, the World Cup, or the World Snooker Championship, it’s Eurovision that I look to for a vision of nations united by passion, enthusiasm, honest-to-goodness earnest fun, and glitter cannons. I try to go in fresh and experience every song for the first time on the night, so I have no informed predictions, but it’s rare that Sweden don’t deliver the goods. And I would like to see Sweden host again after 2016’s delightful show. Anyway. Video games, yeah?

Hullo there! Happy May Day Bank Holiday Weekend, gang. Or to translate that into International English: we won’t be here on Monday cos it’s a holiday. I always remember this as a day to visit the seaside, splashing about and eating half a pint of vinegar-soaked cockles. Perhaps your plans are more glamorous, or involve more video games.

Every time I use a springtime header image, I end up damning us to another week of winter. But this time, this time I’m feeling confident about sunshine, frolicking, cans in the park, taps aff, and all the other springtime goodtimes we’ll see for real this weekend. But just in case, perhaps it’s sensible to have an indoors backup plan.

It’s Rezzed time! This weekend, half of RPS will descend upon That London to visit the games show run by our corporate siblings. We have our own room with some strange games on custom controllers (look out for my sloppy work on the Tenya Wanya Teens controllers), we’re talking with makers of Into The Breach and Heat Signature, and we’ll be in a pub on Saturday night. Well, some of us will. Maybe we’ll see you there?

We’ve got one last weekend before half of RPS is off to That London for EGX Rezzed, the show run by our corporate siblings. Various folks among us are chatting with developers on stage, wandering around looking confused, and probably telling youse back home about the games we play there. Ah, That London! I’ve heard so much about it from video games.

What are we all playing this holiday weekend?

Happy Easter, gang! This is an extra-long holiday weekend for us here in the RPS treehouse so we’ll be back on Tuesday. I’d tell some lousy story about us stuffing our faces with Cadbury Creme Eggs but let’s face it: they’re terrible. They are a punishment. We deserve better than those sickly lumps. And now we can have better. Tesco this year started selling Reese’s Peanut Butter Creme Eggs and good grief, they are fantastic. I know, American big-brand chocolate tastes like it’s spent three years in a shoebox, but the big glob of peanutness makes these sing. I am declaring them the Official RPS Egg of Easter. It is settled. No arguments. We’ll see you again on Tuesday.

That’s the Game Developers Conference over and done with for another year, the video games already swept out from the Moscone Center into the street to make room for… a Salesforce convention? Exciting times in sunny San Francisco, no doubt. Our roving reporters still have plent to write up and share from the conference, mind, so do keep an eye on our GDC 2018 tag. Or the website. We’ll post them on the website. In the usual way. This website here. Okay. Bye.

Several of us have flown from the RPS treehouse this weekend like riders on the storm, headed for Americky and the Game Developers Conference. Adam, Brendan, and John will be in San Francisco playing the part of gumshoes, wrapped in trenchcoats, lurking in bars, smoking on street corners, glugging whiskey in the rain, and getting worked over by Pinkertons hired by The Man to keep the precious industry secrets secret. If you see them, bleary-eyed and unshaven, please take them to Mel’s Drive-In diner and order them steak & eggs with black coffee and a cigarette on the side. Hang in there, kid.
