What are we all playing this weekend?

Bad news, gang: this is the last weekend of summer. Good news, everyone: autumn is almost here! Dig in your wardrobe for your scarves, dust off your wooly hats, and remember that there’s still time to rush out and strip off to soak up the dregs of the sunshine.

What are we all playing this weekend?

Oh good grief, it’s Saturday? After the #topbants and travel of the RPS summit down in Brighton (do read all the great guest posts from our out-of-office reply), I had thought today was… Tuesday? Thursday? Not the weekend. But it is! This meant I entirely forgot to ask everyone their weekend playplans.

What are we all playing this weekend?

Monday is a holiday for us here in the RPS treehouse (and across much of the UK) so we won’t be back in full force until Monday Tuesday [Yes, I know – this is why the extra day is a divine gift -ed.]. Just think what we might all do we an extra day off! Wait, no need to think – we could simply tell you.

Here’s a game I call Reboot, Remake, Rip Off. It works like Flip, Marry, Kill but with video games and without putting your genitals near anything, being more about which of the options you would most like to see rebooted, remade, and widely copied from, yeah? Let’s start with some neglected first-person shooters.

Reboot, remake, rip off: Red Faction, F.E.A.R., and Sin?

Answers and arguments in the comments, gang.

Happy International Youth Day, everyone! If you too believe the children are our future, celebrate today by giving a youth you know what you would’ve wanted at their age: someone to talk to, someone who listens and believes them without judging, plus twenty Silk Cut and a bottle of WKD Blue.

The Internet informs me that today is Sandcastle Day, Work Like a Dog Day, Disc Golf Day, Mustard Day, Oyster Day, Mead Day, and Underwear Day. These being well-recognised days we all celebrate, we’re in for an interesting weekend. But wait, it gets better: Sunday’s festivities include International Sailor Moon Day, Psychic Day, and Friendship Day. What a weekend!

Back when I worked for a multiplatform site, folks used to talk about “the summer lull”. These wonderful months were a period to be dreaded, a period when few games are released and there’s little to play. It’s quite nice I can now be entirely oblivious of any supposed lull, with a bazigillion games out on PC all the time and so very, very many good ones always to catch up on. Not one single game could be released for a year and I’d hardly notice. Really though: it’s summer, go outside.

June is bustin’ out all over, wrote Rodgers and Hammerstein, and bustin’ makes me feel good. If summer could hold out just a little longer and last the weekend, ooh that’d be grand. And if it doesn’t, hey, we can shelter indoors playing video games.

Goodness me, that’s the end of E3. For me, at least. Our Adam has been out in Los Angeles (he hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and his cardigan) and will have so very much to tell us about all he saw if he ever escapes the maze of the convention center. But the rest of us, we can stop looking so much at games that aren’t out and get back to ones which are.

E3 is upon us! The huge trade show doesn’t officially begin until Tuesday but a lot of the big and exciting stuff will happen this weekend in livestreamed pre-show presentation. It’s a game-o-rama. Our Adam is out there in Los Angeles and we’ll be covering things from afar too.

We’re in that weird pre-E3 phase where video game news can gush forth in mighty torrents then cease just as suddenly. It’s an unnerving time to be a cybercowboy on the wild frontier. Are the horses just restless or do they feel the rumble of news? Given that E3 unofficially starts earlier every year, perhaps it’ll be in full swing by the time I finish this sentence.

Britain has a holiday on Monday so we’ll be back in full force on Tuesday, though we will trickle some odds and ends your way over the long weekend. And what a weekend it looks to be! Some might say discussing the weather is trite but mate, if you’re not excited by the unofficial start of the British summer giving us glorious sunshine transitioning into storms, I don’t want to talk to you.

Bruce Foxton’s War In The West is rising in the east and, as Gary Gilmore’s Eyes Over Azerbaijan begins to blink, the telegraph taps out this week’s missive from HQ. Roman, as ever, is lurking in the wardrobe with a wicked smile. Wait. Hang on. The cheek of it!

I have come to a conclusion regarding weekends. They are clearly not times when everyone is off work and gets to lark about and play games as they please, right? And it sucks to have people talk about how great the weekend is when you yourself are working, yes? So: if you don’t work weekends, any time to talk up weekends to people who are themselves working, they may demand that you sing Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 right there and then. I couldn’t rightly explain why but that seems fair.

What are we all playing this May Day weekend?

Another long weekend is here! Monday is May Day, so we’ll all be off dancing around maypoles and getting ourselves burned in giant wicker men. I hope I get to go in the arm with the geese; those honky lads love a bit of a banter. Those of us who survive the festivities will return on Tuesday.
