What are we all playing this weekend?

I still can’t get over Liz England’s video game erotica Twitter bot. Every time the bot spits out another tweet I groan “Oh nooo” and cover my eyes then want find someone and shout “LOOK AT THIS. THIS IS HORRIBLE. LOOK AT IT!”

What are we all playing this weekend?

After a traditional slow start to the year, video games have picked up and pelted a whole load of great games at us all at once. This week has brought Celeste, Subnautica, Iconoclasts, and The Red Strings Club, and Total Warhammer 2’s new expansion – and those are only the ones we’ve reviewed so far. A good time for good video games.

What are we all playing this weekend?

I realise it’s trite to talk about the weather but we had a great bit of snow this week. I live off a main road it’s common to hear drunk people walking past talking, singing, or shouting in the middle of the night – but snow magically calmed some this week. 2am, two people spend a while going on outside my window, one of those halfhearted drunk arguments, but when they suddenly go quiet I worry something has happened. I poke my head out the window and… they’re building a snowman. They’re rolling snowballs around, snapping stickarms off Christmas trees out by the bins, and very quietly building a metre-tall snowman. Eventually they left, and took the snowman with them in their arms. Magical. Thanks, snow. Anyway, something something video games?

Back once again with the ill behaviour, yeah? Ooh it’s been a strange week, with half of Team RPS still on holiday (we’ve swiped their chairs to put our feet up) and video games still warming up. I’m sure next week will all be burning donuts on our gamehogs but for now: what are you playing this weekend? Here’s what’s we’re clicking on.

What are we all playing this holiday?

Ho ho ho! Happy holidays, gang. We’re now (mostly) finished for the year, logging off to spend a week carving new megalithic calendars for 2018. We’ll have some bits and pieces over the break but will return in full force on January 2nd. And by “in full force” I probably mean “slightly dazed but enthusiastic to remember what it is we do.”

What are we all playing this weekend?

Wotcha gang. I’m writing this at 3:47am on Saturday after returning from revelry following our parent company’s AGM. I’m certainly not saying Adam and I are the best at karaoke but by god, he gave it his all in our duets. I think we got through Common People, Blue Monday, Love Is A Battlefield, The Love Cats, How Soon Is Now, Wonderwall (we didn’t queue it but hey), Sabotage, Gold… right, yes, all this would be why my throat is raw. Time to neck a litre of water and a whole chapstick then bed.

yes I'm afraid you're ALL on the naughty list in this illustration from Death's Doings

Alice, your usual host, is away this week. The last I saw of her she was bricking up her chimney and muttering something about defensive perimeters. I’m sure it’ll all be fine.

My Christmas preparations mostly involve a slight injection of colour into my wardrobe and a desire for all things cinnamon and ginger. I also spend quite a bit of time making sure the RPS Advent Calendar is fully stocked with lovely treats. But is there still time for games, I hear you ask? Of course there is.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Christmasish, at least. Close to Christmassy. God help me, I adore this season. The lights, the music, the movies, the endless sweet treats, people wearing paper crowns, the RPS Advent Calendar… it’s a good season. I deal very badly with Christmas itself but Christmas time is grand. What I’m saying is: it is now official Christmas tradition to play both Skeal and Dracula Cha Cha, so get to it.

Of all the header illustrations I’ve used for WPAPWPAPWTW over the years, Death stepping up to bowl a few overs ↑ is definitely one of my favourites. No one looks happy to be on the business end of Death’s off spin.

While games are still releasing and bursting all over, we’re starting to think and argue about games for this year’s Bestest Best Games advent calendar. Digging up that link has made me re-read last year’s bestest bests and damn, yeah, I’d forgotten about Devil Daggers being the very bestest but I’m still entirely on board with it. I’m bad with these whole ‘time’ and ‘memory’ things so I’m excited to be reminded what came out this year. As if I wasn’t just playing Plunkbat and Isaac anyway.

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The day of the big Tesco shop;
I know of no reason
Why milk, bread, eggs, broccoli, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, spaghetti, halloumi, olive oil, mustard, tea, Horlicks, scourers, toothpaste, face wipes, and Riesen
Should ever be forgot!

Alice is on holiday and she’s taken all the games with her. Luckily some developers released new games after she’d left, so the rest of us still have something to play. Our choices are below, but we want to know from you: what are you playing in this weekend of plenty?

With Halloween events and other spookies, the best season is really heating up. Like a cauldron over a fire. Like the opposite of cooling down like a grave, a cold thing. I don’t know anymore. It’s been a long week.

Shops do take the Michael with seasonal goods, stocking for Easter as soon as Christmas passes and preparing for summer when I still barely see daylight, but I have been quite delighted to see Halloween stuff everywhere. If you have no use for a giant bucket of plastic spiders on October 7th, I don’t know what you’re doing with your life.

Welcome to Saturday, gang. We did it. We’ve reached the weekend. More than that, we’ve reached the end of September. If these distinctions are arbitrary, why are they so exciting?

Alternatively, if you’re reading this on Sunday: pinch and a punch for the first of the month – and no returns!

What are we all playing this weekend?

Welcome to autumn! This is the first weekend of the season, a time to sit on a park bench watching leaves rust and tutting at those which are already falling. A few weeks from now, we’ll be gaily kicking through leafy streets and puffing little clouds of steam. A few days after that, we’ll be unleashing big steamy puffs as we cuss up a storm at the damn fool sodden leafmash that made us fall on our jacksie.
