The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 22

It's a picture, on top of a post, all covered in writing, and smelling like toast.

Well cor and blimey, it’s a new podcast. Sorry about the delay since the last – we all lost our feet, and then were trapped by elephants. Recovered and recompiled, Jim and John spoke out loud into a recording microphone, and now offer the result to the warm folds of your ear. Sat on John’s patio, surrounded by cats and revving engines, we soaked in the warm July sun and chatted about matters of PC importance. Matters such as the nature of previewing, Burnout Paradise, and which playground games should be made for PC.

One Life Left: Goodbye Gordon

Walker like Ste. Kieron likes Ste. Jim likes Ste. Is that the time?

One Life Left is back! Well, it was back last week, but we didn’t mention it, because we like to provoke a kind of brooding loathing between us and them, think of us the Sharks and Jets of videogame discourse. Is tragedy going to arise when Anne Scantlebury falls for Walker? Oh, it surely will. Anyway – we decide to mention it this week, because there’s a PC-related song 44 minutes into it, from the oft-amusing Doyouinverts?. It’s about Gordon Freeman of Half-life fame and you can listen to it here. If you skip forward 44 minutes, anyway. Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, here’s the mail Ste sent us…

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 21

It’s time again. Alec and Kieron, bringing unsexy back. Convening in a North London flat, supported by packets of tea and the speeches of General Patton, they strive to talk about topics of import to the PC nation. From Sims 3, to Left 4 Dead 2, to adventure games, to remixing classics to a worrying amount of time trying to psychoanalyze John Walker and an even more disturbing length of time chewing over matters sexual like four year olds. You can get it from here, see its internet page here or join iTunes here or follow on RSS here. You’ll find a full Episode breakdown below…

Left 4 Dead 2 – Podcast With Chet Faliszek

Imagine a big banner boasting Chet's name on this too.

In a world exclusive audio interview, Rock, Paper, Shotgun sat down with Valve’s project lead, Chet Faliszek, to discuss the freshly revealed Left 4 Dead 2.

Within is comprehensive coverage of the new game, the new ideas, the new weapons and campaigns and characters and Infected. You’ll find this nowhere else on the internet. It’s still a Rock, Paper, Shotgun podcast, of course, so there’s also plenty of discussion about our mums, swine flu, and Chet’s horror at John’s foul language. Chet talks not only about the new elements to the game, but also gives us some background as to why Valve chose to make a whole new game, rather than expanding upon the original. There’s also information on how this doesn’t mean L4D is forgotten.

It's a picture at the top of a post about a podcast.

Now we seem to have a website again thanks to Earth’s greatest hero, Johnathan at Positive Internet – everyone switch your hosting over to them now – we can post a podcast! Jim and John gathered, and words were exchanged. We recorded them. Now you listen to them. It’s so simple it just might work.

Podcast Promiscuousity: RPS On Joypod

KFG is a Quarter to Three running gag. I'm Kieron Fucking Gillen, for reasons to complicated to explain. It involves someone being not too bright in their defense of the Club, if I remember correctly.
You may be missing last week’s Alec/Gillen RPS Electronic Wireless Show. It’s just about possible. London transport screwed us, basically, meaning we were unable to get to Quinns house to do it before we had to cook for a crowd of young people. Alec does a mean chicken. However, if you really want to hear me yabber, last night I guest-appeared on the Joypod Podcast to talk about whatever came to mind. Subjects included the Sims 3, not being bored of games journalism, some comic stuff, why developers have reservations about forums and a lot of the usual stuff. And they continue onwards while I retire to make some tacos. Yes. You can get it from here.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 16

It's a logo. Naomi Klein is FURIOUS about it.

Welcome to our first ever sixteenth Electronic Wireless Programme. It’s Jim and John this week, once more gathered in John’s gloomy room to record their completely not gloomy podcast. Under our terrifying wordgaze comes Mafia II, LucasArts anecdotes, Stalker: Clear Sky modding, Zeno Clash piracy tactics, and the comments of Heather Chaplin.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 15

What do we do to make sure we do a podcast this week, when RPS comrades cannot meet? We turn to Skype. So Kieron and Jim try and talk to each other via tiny microphones and, despite the fact we’re only across the country rather than across continents, it sounds somewhat worse than when we did it with Leigh (You said “Do it” – Ed). Anyway – you can download it direct here, it has an individual net-home and here’s the iTunes page, and you’ll find the running order of this short and sharp podcast beneath the cut. Woo!

Words in a picture, wicture.

Religious holidays cannot stop us. The RPS Electronic Wireless Show reaches its landmark fourteenth episode, with Jim and John in one of the RPS Castle antechambers, huddled around the recording gramophone cylinder. The Electronic Wireless: Leigh Alexander GDC!

RPS didn’t go to GDC. Leigh Alexander did. So we thought it a good idea to get her on the yap-machine to ask her about her experiences. Bit of an experimental RPS-cast this one, being done over Skype. Will the sound quality be enough for the audiophile RPS listeners? I think it’s okay – did some noise-reduction and leveling which seems to polish it up, though there’s a smidge of drop-out right near the end. Ah, that internet wireless. Anyway – you can download it direct here, it has an individual net-home and here’s the iTunes page, while the full running order – in case you want to skip past the bits where Leigh insists on talking about consoles – is beneath the cut…

PODCASTLOGOINYOURFACE

Welcome, it’s a new Rock, Paper, Shotgun Electronic Wireless Show. Jim and John gather to mouthspeak about PC gaming and beards for the entertainment of the masses. Wonder at how they say thoughts aloud, gasp at the interruptions from local wildlife, be astonished at our lusting after news readers with lisps, and then be brought back down to Earth by the intricate discussion of the important gaming matters of the day.

The RPS Electronic Wireless: Leigh Alexander!

We’ve been promising this for a while, but I’ve finally managed to go through and edit this. It’s still fifty minutes recorded when I was off in New York for NYCC and crashing overnight at game journalist dynamo Leigh Alexander‘s Brooklyn apartment. At near midnight, after hitting a bar somewhere, whilst drinking some manner of whiskey. We mainly focus on Leigh’s background in games and her ongoing interests – which includes lots on sex and sexuality in games, and culture generally. It’s both more off-topic and probably more explicit than usual. To say the least. It’s a fascinating carcrash between some fancy games and cultural theory and… well, just a carcrash. Also, takes a while to get the mic position sorted so Leigh’s laugh causes some peaks, especially early on. We know that some of you are sensitive like that. Anyway – you can download it direct here, it has a special internet home and here’s the Itunes home, while the full running order is beneath the cut…

Sound Quality: A Life Well Wasted

You say “gaming podcast” and what you’re probably thinking of is “a bunch of nerdy guys sitting in a room around a shitty mike and/or yabbering over Skype about what games they played this week”. It’s certainly what we do. It doesn’t have to be like that, as the scarily well-done Audio-Documentary approach of Robert Ashley’s A Life Well Wasted proves.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 10

Fill your ears.

Regular as a giant clock that only bongs every now and then, the Rock, Paper, Shotgun Electronic Wireless Show returns. This time Jim and John gather before the microphone to discuss our mother games. The Path and Eve get a good going over, followed by discussion based on the tweets we received – what kinds of gamers are we, and what is the future of user-generated content. We conclude with the announcement of the winner of our RPS Jingle Contest. It’s a short but sweet podcast this time, and can be downloaded from here. iTunes here. And it’s own site here. Please to enjoy.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 9

You’re excited. We’re excited. We’re so excited we’ve got a microexpansion. It probably doesn’t make much sense to you now, but will do after you’ve finished episode 9 of the RPS Electronic Wireless Show. This is the one where RPS’ London contingent hit back at the provincial sorts and talk about all things PC gaming, and a few things that aren’t. Main topics? World in Conflict: Soviet Fisticuffs, why games journos go into development, Dawn of War 2 and the relative merits of bugginess and shortness. Oh, and Empire Total War, with some terrible understanding of history. Simon Schama would be disgusted.

PODCAST! PODCAST!

Clutch your armrests, the RPS Electronic Wireless Show returns, exactly on time. Jim, John and a creaky chair, their bellies filled with pizza, huddled around the world’s quietest microphone to discuss the most significant gaming facts of all time. There’s discussion of FEAR 2, Empire: Total War, Dawn of War II, Planetside, Rise of the Argonauts, and Mass Effect 2. There’s also discussion of the Officially Unofficial RPS TF2 server, the potential for an RPS MMO, and responses to words tweeted to us by the wise. Oh, and the first ever RPS Electronic Wireless Show Compo.

The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 7

OMG!

Yes, yes indeed, it’s back. The RPS Electronic Wireless Show returns after an embarrassing amount of time. Jim and John get together to discuss the most important gaming news of the week, such as the opening of Half-Life, snowmen, and why you should give your children the MMR vaccine. However, we also manage to squeeze in discussions about Men Of War, Burnout Paradise, and EA’s slippery release schedule.

In a new and exciting twist, we also take quite a lot of our lead from Twitter. This is something we plan to do in future, and hopefully using RPS’ Twitter account. (However, just for the moment neither of us knows the password for that one, so we used mine. We’re a slick machine!)

RPS Podcast Takeover Prt 2: One Life Left

Ooh, I do like a nice bit of terrain.

It’s not just John who can barge into one of our peers’ expensive recording studios and marvel at their fancy mikes. I was the special guest on the award-nominated One Life Left last night, with comrades Ste Curran and Sir Ann Scantlebury. You can get the podcast here. In it we talk about all the important issues, such as where I was when I heard the PC had died and why anyone would play a Civil War game anyway. Also, talk about the Sugababes. You’ll also find details of the OLL Christmas party, which I’ll be attended on Satuday. Do come! Here’s the link again, in case you read with your mouse-cursor as a guide. Which podcast should RPS crash next, readers?

RPS Wireless Show Ep6: Erik Wolpaw Speak-O-Chat

Clear as a bell!

In a very special sixth edition of the very “special” Rock, Paper, Shotgun Electronic Wireless Show, not only are all four overlords of RPS united, but also joined by a proper important guest. Mr Erik Wolpaw was lovely enough to join us in one of Valve’s echoey metal rooms, so we could discuss co-op gaming memories, Left 4 Dead, and the trick behind decent voice acting. Along with all the usual excellent distractions and nonsense. Details below.
