Quest in peace: wandering through Yonder

Nothing really matters in Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles [official site]. Shipwrecked on an island that has been infested with some sort of sinister cloudy muck, known as the Murk, you might think it’s imperative that you clear up the unpleasantness so that people can return to the homes they once inhabited. Everywhere you look there are ruined homes but the islanders don’t fuss about them; they’ve got villages and farms and guilds, and they seem perfectly happy.

In fact, everyone in Yonder seems happy and the more I play, the more radical that design choice seems.

Podcast: The Electronic Wireless Show talks Pyre,
Dream Daddy, and horror

Podcast hosts Brendan, Pip and Adam

What’s that unsettling white noise coming from the other room? Oh no, it’s the 10th episode of the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. This week, the gang are talking about horror in games (but not necessarily “horror games”). Adam and Brendan are terrified by the depths of Subnautica, which doesn’t frighten Pip in the slightest.

But we also like playing non-scary things. Brendan has been competing in the purgatorial fantasy sport of Pyre, and Adam has been catching fish and watching tranquil sunsets in Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. Meanwhile, Pip has been dating dads in the gay suburban utopia of Dream Daddy. Wot I Think: Yonder – The Cloud Catcher Chronicles

Ignore the silly name, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles [official site] is pretty special. A combat-free, risk-free game of exploration and meandering, farming and cat-gathering, questing and lazily fishing. Here’s wot I think: Read the rest of this entry »

Lovely peaceful adventure Yonder released

If you fancy exploring, fishing, farming, befriending, cooking, and crafting, while saving a land without fighting anyone, have a gander at Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles [official site]. Launched this morning, it’s a mighty pretty and nonviolent open-world adventure which looks to smoosh bits of games like Stardew Valley and Zelda together. Only with no fighting. No, the way to save everyone is simply by helping people with their tasks.

Our John is having a bash to tell us all Wot He Thinks later but, for now, he tells me he found it “immediately incredibly calming and serene.” Read the rest of this entry »

Yonder shows off lovely lands and animal friendship

A pair of wee new Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles [official site] trailers give pleasant looks at the colourful land we’ll get to save by… not killing anything. Nope, while Yonder might have a mild look of Zelda to it, it’s a nonviolent adventure where we’ll save an island from creeping corruption, sure, but also do a lot of crafting, farming, and fishing. The game’s still a bit mysterious but it looks and sounds delightful. My main lesson from these videos is: you can befriend a red panda. Read the rest of this entry »

Yonder looks a bit Zelda, a bit Stardew Valley, all lovely

Oh sure, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles [official site] might look Legend of Zelda-y and okay, it is about a hero roaming the land to save it from evil, but get this: no combat. It’s Zelda filtered through Stardew Valley, a game where you save the world by helping people with your talents for farming, fishing, crafting, and such. No combat! Developers Prideful Sloth this week announced that they’ll release Yonder on July 18th and, while I’m a little hazy on quite what it is, this new trailer has me charmed: Read the rest of this entry »
