We’ve launched rockpapershotgun.de!

rpsgermany

A quick look at our traffic tells me that Germany is currently Rock, Paper, Shotgun’s third largest audience. That’s a lot of people, and if you’re one of them, we’ve made something for you. It’s rockpapershotgun.de! A new site that both translates our articles into German and produces new original work just for German readers. Read the rest of this entry »

Check out the new RPS forum

Update: We’re aware that some users are having trouble logging in and retrieving their old passwords. We’re working on it now and hope to have the ‘forgotten password’ emails working for everyone shortly. Thanks for the feedback so far! We’ve already made a bunch of changes to layout and categories as a result, so keep it coming.

The new forum is live! Check it out here, or read on for some other details Read the rest of this entry »

There will be some forum downtime tomorrow

forum

The RPS forum is getting an upgrade. Tomorrow we’re going to switch it over to a new server and we’re also using the opportunity to change the software it runs on. This requires the forum to be taken offline for a day, but fear not: all old posts and threads shall be loaded into trucks and driven to the new home. Read the rest of this entry »

RPS OoO: read all the guest posts here

rpsmeet2

RPS has switched off its out-of-office message, which in reality means the team have left the office and are now on planes and trains heading back to the homes we all work from. Did the team ride the teacups on the pier and sick up all our donuts on Brendan? You’ll never find out, because we archived all your emails asking about it without reading them, just like everyone does when they come back to their inbox from some time away.

New posts will still be slightly few in number probably until tomorrow, but our guest posts prepared in advance have come to an end. We hope you enjoyed them, and you can read them all here. Thanks to Tim, Richard, Hannah, Dominic and Fraser for helping out.

RPS OoO: please enjoy these posts in our absence

rpsmeet

RPS is doing something it almost never does today: we’re all meeting up in-person. This is either where we clamber inside a cocoon and emerge at the other side as a more beautiful butterfly, or it’s the start of a King Ralph-style comedy where we’re all simultaneously killed and Tim Stone ends up running the site alone. I’m not sure which you’d prefer.

But relatedly, while the team are all putting our heads together and finding out how tall Brendan is, we’ve asked some of our friends to write short posts for the site today about subjects of their choosing. Tim, Richard Cobbett, Fraser Brown and more all contribute over the next day and a half, and each will be tagged like this. In the evening, our usual assortment of features. Enjoy and we’ll be back soon. Read the rest of this entry »

PSA: RPS is now owned by Gamer Network

Kieron and Jim, yesterday.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun began in 2007 with a modest goal and in the ten years since has grown and grown, from that first post to a glistening archive of over 33,000, and from four founders working in their spare time to a hugely successful enterprise with seven full-time staff. We achieved our goal, but our ambitions have grown bigger.

We want to keep growing and to build a better, more entertaining website about PC games, and we can do that better with help. To that end, we’re excited to announce that RPS is now owned by Gamer Network.

What does this actually mean? Read the rest of this entry »

PSA: you should change your RPS password, just in case

Last night, content delivery network and security service Cloudflare reported that a security issue means that it’s possible they accidentally leaked user passwords for websites that use their service. Since RPS is a user of Cloudflare in the operation of our servers, that means that to be on the safe side you should change your RPS website and forum password. We think it’s highly unlikely that any user will be affected but it’s better to be safe than sorry. There’s more information on exactly what’s happened below, along with details of how to change your password.

PSA: Hey! We’ve Got A Functioning Reviews Database Now

If you were to imagine Rock, Paper, Shotgun as a person, we’d be three naughty toddlers balanced on each other’s shoulders wearing a long coat. Ignore the groaning from our knees, pay no heed to the whispers from our tummy; we are a proper full-grown game website and you’ve no reason to argue otherwise. For example, we’ve got a proper game reviews database and everything now. It includes every Wot I think wot we’ve thunk dated back to 2010, it can be sorted by title and date, and golly you can even type words in a wee box at the top and it’ll find reviews that include that word.

Magic.

PSA: Where To Find Rock, Paper, Shotgun Around The Web

Social media.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is more than just a website. It’s the last line of defense against the humdrum of everyday existence. It’s an ever-expanding collection of wonderful, videogame-y things to help you remember why you love this medium in the first place. It’s sort of a blog, which is a subcategory of website.

It’s also a Facebook page, Twitter account and YouTube channel, which maybe you’d like to follow.
