Classic web series Consolevania returning

Consolevania, the strange and delightful video game webseries which spawned BBC Scotland show VideoGaiden, is returning. Rab Florence (who wrote our Cardboard Children column) and Ryan Macleod have launched a Patreon to crowdfund new episodes and mercy me it looks like they’re doing well so far. Consolevania’s something I missed at the time, only finding it later and out-of-context, but I still laugh remembering some sketches. Not just the ones that poke fun at RPS elder Kieron Gillen. Pre-Cardboard Children: Consolevania

That's him on the right. Sorry about the Christmas tree.

Rab Florence isn’t just an increasingly renowned TV comedian/writer who also writes an amazing boardgame column for Rock, Paper, Shotgun, you know. From 2004 to 2009, he also used to co-present his own online telly show about videogames, Consolevania. It’s excellent, acerbic, weird and affectionately angry stuff (including to our own Kieron Gillen, aka Kevin Leddins), and it’s just been de-archived to arrive in its entirety on iTunes. For free, like. Obviously the iTunes application is THE DEVIL INCARNATE or at least THE WORST PIECE OF SOFTWARE EVER CREATED (I really do believe that), but if you can deal with that or want to bypass it by downloading directly to your EyeTelephone or EyePad, this is about the easiest way to get hold of the complete run and then save it for digital posterity.

Watch, laugh, wince, cry that Rab doesn’t still do games stuff regularly.

Downtime Town On: Horus Heresy

He's a bad guy. Who'd have thunk it.

For those who’ve been following Alec, my and Mr Florence’s twitter, we’ve been rambling about the latest product of Fantasy Flight Games’ Games Workshop-licenced games. Specifically, a reimagining of the old Horus Heresy boardgame called – er – Horus Heresy. For those who don’t follow the 40k mythos, the Heresy isn’t one of those boring medieval ones where you get burned alive for suggesting hessian is better than hemp cloth or similar. It’s a Heresy which means THE ETERNAL CITY OF THE GOD-EMPEROR IS BESIEGED BY THE WARMASTER, CORRUPTED BY CHAOS. Which is a much better subject for a board-game than Hessian/Hemp comparisons, I dare say. Anyway, Rab’s gone and lobbed up his video review of it. No singing about Overwatch, Baby, but no-one reviews boardgames like Mr Florence. Video embedded below…
