The Top Best Bestest Games Of 2017 So Far

Update: The year is finished, which means you can now read our final list of the best games of 2017.

2017 has already been an extraordinary year for PC games, from both big-name AAA successes to no-name surprise indie smashes. Keeping up with so much that’s worth playing is a tough job, but we’ve got your back. Here is a collection of the games that have rocked the RPS Treehouse so far this year.

To The Moon-inspired adventure Rakuen is out now

Rakuen [official site], the first game from Laura Shigihara, has been five years in the making, and is out today. “Laura Shigihara?” you say, “I know that name from somewhere!” Indeed you do – Shigihara came to fame when she wrote and performed the fabulous song that accompanied the original Plants Vs Zombies. She has since composed and performed music for many independent games, perhaps most notably the gorgeous To The Moon – a game that was a big inspiration for Rakuen. Read the rest of this entry »

Rakuen: Paradise Found

Laura Shigihara’s Project Rakuen, now just Rakuen, has at last got a trailer to show. We first mentioned the combat-free RPG last year. Shigihara, brought to fame by her song for PopCap’s Plants Vs. Zombies, went on to work for the developer for a while, but is now fully indie once again. Alongside regularly recording songs for her popular YouTube channel, she has contributed to a number of other games, including Kan Gao’s To The Moon. And all the while has been working on Rakuen, about the fantasy world entered into by a young, hospitalised boy.

Patients, Now: Project Rakuen

After a stint working with PopCap, Plants Vs Zombies/To The Moon songwriter Laura Shigihara is indie once again. And for the last year she’s been working on Project Rakuen, a game she describes as “like a mix between Maniac Mansion, To the Moon, and The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (though without battles or fighting).” Set in a mysterious hospital, it’s a story of how a young boy uses his imagination to understand the world, and indeed other patients, around him.
