A New Hope? Unreal-Powered KOTOR Fan Remake

Feels like it’s far too soon to be remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic but a) they’ve rebooted the Spider-Man movies 48 times in 18 months and b) KOTOR is, in fact, 13 years old oh god I’m so ancient how did this happen help help. So maybe the time isn’t too un-wrong for someone to take a crack at making one of the most beloved 3D-accelerated Star Wars games look a whole lot more modern. Waitaminnit: isn’t this just like George Lucas and his bloody Special Editions? SHUT IT DOWN SHUT IT DOWN SHUT IT DOWN.

The fans making Apeiron carefully classify it as a mod rather than a standalone project, in the hope that Ian Disney won’t force-choke it to death. It’s a remake of KOTOR in the Unreal 4 engine, and while it’s a million parsecs away from completion, or even from showing how it will function as a game (including an apparent move from third- to first-person blasting), we do get a look at some extremely pretty and really quite Star Warsy environments.

Remember Citadel: Dev Livestreams And A Fan Remake

Around me is a burgeoning empire of steel.

Happy birthday, SHODAN! The puckish AI with delusions of godhood turned 20 on Monday (as did System Shock, I guess), and would be flattered by what some are doing to celebrate and glorify her. Firstly, a group of System Shock’s creators got together to stream the Looking Glass classic and gas about the dear old gal and their game. If watching isn’t enough, (another) project aiming to remake System Shock has appeared, and it’s looking pretty good so far.

D/Generation To Return! An HD Remake On The Way

I’m not saying I cause all the good things in the world. I leave it to others to accurately observe this. So it will have to be someone else who gives me my deserved credit for the exciting news that West Coast Software has gained the license to remake D/Generation. I mean, I mentioned it only three weeks ago on RPS, as an example of a game people have forgotten about but that brings a wave of joyful nostalgia when recalled. And now, well, I’m just saying. Big thanks to Retro Gamer for the spot.

What The Duck: More Unnecessary 8-Bit Retromancy

Might solve a mystery?

Look here, I liked Duck Tales – cartoon and game alike – well enough when I were a lad, but do we really need to pillage every last dusty coin from the tomb of ancient videogaming? Disney’s already having the Castle of Illusion remade in spangle-vision, and now another anthropomorphic animal platformer is getting tarted up and resold to people who can remember when all this were fields. Previously only announced for the toyboxes, we now hear that Capcom will also be releasing Duck Tales: Higher Resolution Version on PC, which I guess is good news if you’re one of those who can’t stop fiddling with your nostalgia glans. Have a look, and a singalong, below.

Cloud Saves: Final Fantasy VII Returns To PC

It already happened once, but that didn’t stop Square Enix from doing it again and releasing Final Fantasy VII on the PC. Unlike the majority off re-releases, there’s not even a hint of HD about this return to the most beloved game JRPG of the PlayStation 1 generation. So what gives?

From Bright Skies: Dark Reign Redux

REDUXED

Back in 1997, there was a strategy game released that went by the name of Dark Reign. I’m fairly sure I played the demo but I can’t be certain because I just played the demo again and drew a blank. The reason I’m playing the demo is that it’s just been re-released, remade even, to run through Silverlight as Dark Reign Redux. The demo is available now, with a full release on its way at an undetermined price. The XBLArgh version is priced at 400 Microbucks, which is around £3.50 by my reckoning. Perhaps you wish to try the demo? Here it is, with a 120MB install size. Back in ’97, Dark Reign came on 16,521 floppies.
