Far Cry 5 review in progress

Having been supplied code for Far Cry 5 late, I haven’t yet had time to play enough to write the full Wot I Think, but since it’s out today, I thought I’d give you a whiff of its flavour so far. (tl;dr: It’s mostly pine needles and burning flesh.)

After 9 hours and 15 minutes of Far Cry 5, I’ve killed 912 enemies. That’s 1.6 kills a minute, including cutscenes and wandering plains, forests and mountains of Hope County, Montana. It even includes a spot of salmon fishing. There is a lot of killing in Far Cry 5, which is a game that does not like to leave you alone for a goddamned minute. Read the rest of this entry »

Mafia 3 Review In Progress Part 2

For reasons that are increasingly apparent, 2K chose not to share review code with the press for Mafia III [official site], instead choosing for everyone to be able to buy it before critics could potentially warn them off. Having played the game for many, many hours, here is a second incarnation of my review-in-progress of the crime caper, in a revised and much extended version of my previous coverage. The final review will be later this week.

Review In Progress: Mafia III

For reasons that are becoming apparent, 2K chose not to share review code with the press for Mafia III [official site], instead choosing for everyone to be able to buy it before critics could potentially warn them off. So it is that we couldn’t get our hands on it before you could, and I’m playing the game over the weekend to be able to bring you a full review next week. But in the meantime, below is a Review In Progress, my thoughts from the earlier hours of this open-city mafia-me-be, to give you a rough idea of whether this is a something in which you want to sink your pennies. Clearly the below is not a final review of the game, but it sure contains my feelings about the experience so far.

Battlefield: Hardline Wot I Think-In-Progress, Part 1

Me, in the event anyone ever asked me to give this game a score

Battlefield: Hardline [official site] went on sale in the US today, and unlocks for the UK on Friday. We didn’t have access until today, so I’ll run this review in chunks to give you some sense of what we make of it without having to wait too long. In this first part, I’m looking at the first half or so of the campaign, which details a Miami police officer becoming embroiled in an escalating drug war with a side-helping of corruption in the force.

Evolve Wot I Think-In-Progress, Part 2: Puny Humans

Editor’s note – we only received review code for Evolve [official site] yesterday. Rather than now wait a week or so to run a review, I’m posting a very short series of my thoughts as I think ’em, in the hope of providing more timely information to those who want it. Here’s part 1 ICYMI.

I’m into the swing of things now, having tried out all the classes in PvP matches with randoms, and unlocked a couple of new characters. Before I get into that stuff though, let me tackle the singleplayer mode, such as it is, in case anyone online-phobic has been curious about that side of things.

Evolve Wot I Think-In-Progress, Part 1: Monster Maths

Turtle Rock’s asymmetrical multiplayer shooter Evolve [official site] went live today, though its many and various DLC shenanigans mean I’m not entirely sure just how much of the game is on my hard drive right now. That’s a dilemma for further down the line though: today, I just want to natter about how it’s feeling a few hours in. We didn’t get review code before release day, so any sort of definitive judgement lies further along your puny mortal timeline. Let’s do this as we go along.
