Rezzed: Enter The Frendzone

The only part of me miserable after Rezzed is my thighs. I had to choose between all the games on the show floor and all those talks in the giant room of developer brain thinks. The decision was almost unbearable, so for the first eight hours of the first day I was stood in the corridor between the two, hoping that being equidistant would allow me to experience both. It did not. Then someone pointed out that my screaming was drowning out the talks, and that the developer talks were being streamed and saved online. So I missed this talk by Mode 7 about their life as indie devs. They skip merrily through their past, touching briefly on their sky-based sword fighting game Determinance, before peeking into their break-out hit Frozen Synapse. All that inevitably ends up with at look at upcoming turn-based futuro-sports game, Frozen Endzone. We can all experience it together, right now.

Rezzed: Ragnar Shows Off Dreamfall Chapters

Is 'neon squalor' an established terms? Cos it should be

If you didn’t make it to Rezzed this weekend just gone, you missed some cracking talks about videogames. You also missed some cracking early footage of upcoming videogames, such as Ragnar Tornquist and Red Thread’s successfully Kickstarterered Longest Journey sequel Dreamfall Chapters. Here’s Ragnar and chums in The Purple Room, fielding questions and showing off cyberpunk future-Prague, the UI and controls and how some of the interactions will work. There’s also a very English robot, which I can only interpret as an aggressive attempt to upstage Sir, You Are Being Hunted.

The Rock, Paper Shotcast: Rezzed And Confused

Along with all of the lovely exhibitors and visitors at Rezzed, the crowd contained every current member of RPS, although one of our number did have to leave in order to care for his offspring. But still we gathered, a band of six, and spoke of what we had seen. Below you will find the Rezzed Shotcast featuring Adam Smith, Cara Ellison, Craig Pearson, Jim Rossignol, John Walker and Nathan Grayson, with discussion of Hotline Miami 2, Sir, You Are Being Hunted, Rome: Total War 2, Gone Home, Revenge of the Sunfish, gaming’s best doors, the first digital willy and much, much more.

Obsidian, Bohemia, Tornquist, Splash Damage On Story

Just wrapped up at the second day of Rezzed 2013 is the second Walker-hosted dev panel, this time focusing on whether storytelling in them there electronic videogames is getting any better. You can watch the hour long talk, featuring Obsidian’s Chris Avellone, Bohemia’s Dean Hall, Red Thread’s Ragnar Tornquist, Spash Damage’s Ed Stern and The Indie Stone’s Will Porter below. It’s just like being there, except you don’t have to sit next to any thin young men frantically scribbling things in notepads.

John Talks To Avellone, Tornquist, Introversion & More Live

Hullo! I write this from a chair in an oddly purple room at Rezzed, where on the stage in front of me Mr John Walker is talking to an array of gaming luminaries from Obsidian, Red Thread, Mode 7 and Introversion about the strange business of PC games, the sinisters ways of publishers and more. Watch it live, or after the event if you’re a slacker, below.

Rezzed: Chris Avellone & Ragnar Tørnquist In Session

As if there weren’t already enough reasons to visit this year’s Rezzed (in only a week’s time!), I’m really thrilled about two developer sessions I’ll be hosting. And even more thrilled about who will be on those panels. With game-creating gurus Chris Avellone and Ragnar Tørnquist appearing on both, you’d be a fruitcake not to come along.

Get Your Endzone To Rezzed Or It’ll Be War For An Eternity

Introversion, last year. For all I know he's dyed his hair pink for this year, so don't consider this too representative

Hidden in the title of this post are the names of three games making appearances at this year’s Rezzed. Can you solve my riddle? That’s right, the 2013 PC and indie games show will feature exclusive first looks at the much-anticipated Your, Or and For An. Less excitingly, there’ll also be sessions from the likes of Total War: Rome 2, Obsidian’s Project Eternity and Mode 7’s Frozen Endzone.

Wanna Show Your Game At Rezzed? Perhaps You Can!

T

he not-very-long road to the second Rezzed, the PC and indie games show we co-string-pull with the fine men, women and Bramwells of Eurogamer, continues apace. As well as buying tickets to attend the shindig – in Birmingham, UK on 22nd/23rd June this year, you can now submit your game for consideration in the Leftfield Collection. If you’ve made one, that is. And you are an independent developer. And it doesn’t include any content which will get you arrested.

Eurogamer & Rock, Paper, Shotgun’s Rezzed Is Back!

After furiously hammering on F9, we’re excited to report that what is obviously the world’s greatest PC-dedicated gaming event, Rezzed, is back for 2013. And it’s bigger and better than last year. Or at least our tummies are. This June, specifically the 22nd and 23rd most days of it, the NEC in Birmingham will house the best of this year’s PC gaming, hands on with unreleased games, developer sessions, and actual RPS writers in the huggable flesh. Oh, and only Chris Avellone and Ragnar Tørnquist already announced as being there.

Aliens vs Presenter: Natural Selection 2 At Rezzed

Are these the biggest teeth in videogames ever? Some naff, desperate site should probably write a top 10

Rezzed was twelve hundred million years ago, but there are still a few dev sessions left to share with those who couldn’t make it down to lovely Brighton on the day. Here’s Unknown Worlds chatting about and demonstrating their aeons-in-gestation FPS/RTS mash-up Natural Selection 2, including a whole lot of giant mouth-based action.

Rezzed: Our, And Your, Game Of The Show

I'm totally going to request a pets section at the next Rezzed

Rezzed the other week was lovely, wasn’t it? I know you think so, because I’ve seen the audience exit polls and almost everyone was happy. And the tiny few who weren’t are habitual miseries who will soon slump into an endless coma of gloom anyway, so let’s not worry about them.

Who cares about people, though? Let’s talk games. RPS has a Game Of The Show, and so does Rezzed’s audience. They are not one and the same, but you can find out what both were below.

Introversion’s Rezzed Session: Explanations, Demos

Introversion used their developer session at Rezzed to explain why they had canned Subversion, and how the technology and ideas from that had become Prison Architect, which was playable at the show. It’s certainly worth a look, and you can watch the session – which includes some footage of Subversion – below. Relatedly, you can also read my take Prison Architect here and here.

Rezzed’s One-Hour Gamejam – Play The Results

The penultimate event of Rezzed saw me trying to organise a collection of people far more talented than I into making videogames within an hour. Less than an hour, in fact, as I hadn’t factored in getting to the stage and plugging everything in. Locked in a junk-filled sideroom, members of the Creative Assembly, Mode7, Littleloud, The Indie Stone, Strongman Games, Thomas Was Alone and more speed-coded frantically, then without pause were dragged on stage by me and interviewed about what they’d done. They did very, very well, and you can play most of resultant games below.

The Misadventures And Mirth Of Project Zomboid

The Project Zomboid session at Rezzed was right at the beginning of the first day and yet it still managed to be extremely busy. Despite the (approximately) seven million people in attendance, if there’s even the slightest chance that one person reading this didn’t see the people of The Indie Stone talking about ‘How (not) to make a game’, I suggest you do so now. With Will Porter guiding the journey from the safety of a podium, the team talk about the origins of the game, copying Notch, living on beans and bread, and a series of extremely unfortunate events. There’s plenty of humour but also memories of robbery, death and the internet being a bastard. Then, for good measure, a trailer for the next version of the game.

3/5ths Of RPS, Quasi-Live On Stage

Nathan had a good excuse what with being American, but why Jim wasn't involved is AN ETERNAL MYSTERY

Rezzed had many highlights, and it’s faintly possible that insane people believe watching me try to construct a little man out of chewing gum and my own spittle was one of them. This was just one of the many strange and possibly dangerous tasks in the live trial by that was the 5th International Indie Mudwrestling Championships, an on-stage panel show hosted with golden-voiced aplomb by Mr John Walker. Adam Smith and I headed up a team respectively, with ample support from indie devs Andrew J Smith of Spilt Milk and Dave Johnston of Smudged Cat. Surprisingly, at no juncture were we booed off stage. We had a live pun thread, Adam and I almost exploded, we listened to the Donkey Kong rap and John kept forgetting that RPS only covers PC games.

Watch our mouths move and words come out of them, sometimes followed by the reassuring sound of laughter, below.

DayZ You’ll Remember All Your Life

The most well-attended session at Rezzed was Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall chatting about the game/mod of the moment, DayZ. Zeitgeisty!

Relaxed and charming, he goes into the making of the open-world zombie survival mod for Arma II before fielding a ton of audience questions on everything from the nature of fun to ‘Day Z hipsters’ and in-game kidnappings. It’s a shame you missed it. If you’re very well-behaved I might let you watch a recording of it below, though.

What’s In The Box, Peter?

I bet there's a dead dog inside the cube

If you couldn’t make it over to the Rezzed game show we co-hosted last weekend – perhaps you live in another country, couldn’t afford it or sensibly realised that it would be unfair to expose that many other human beings to the dangerous, dazzling beauty of your face – have no fear. Well, have some fear, as the Western world is on the brink of ruin and all that, but specifically have no fear that there’s no way for you to see the speakers and sessions at the show. The chaps at Eurogamer were able to use some manner of magic electronic gun that can capture and store both sound and vision, and quite likely also the souls of whatever it’s pointed at. So here’s Peter Molyneux talking about his post-Lionhead plans with new studio 22 Cans, his thoughts on the excellent Molydeux spoof Twitter account and the “life-changing” contents of the mysterious cube in Curiosity.

Caution: includes wild, impossible claims and promises. But he wouldn’t be P-Mol if it didn’t.

It’s Rezzed Tomorrow! And It’s Going To Be Rather Good

Be there, or we'll cry.

We have indeed posted lots about Rezzed. (It’s actually been 13 posts out of the 920 since it was first announced – Passive-Aggressive Ed.) But here is a generous reminder to encourage you to join us at the inaugural PC and Indie Games show, taking place in Brighton Friday and Saturday this week. Because it’s actually going to be really great!

Not only will a bunch of hotly anticipated unreleased games be playable on the show floor, but there’s also a bunch of super-famous gaming types giving presentations, and perhaps most excitingly of all, the opportunity to meet Eurogamer’s Tom “Tom Bramwell” Bramwell, along with the RPS hivemind and Eurogamer collective. And I’m guaranteeing a free hug for everyone who buys a ticket.

Alt.Rezzed: Indie, Boardgames, Jam

I don't actually like Brighton pier myself, but apparently it is THE LAW that all visitors here must go see it

OK, we have been somewhat keen-o in telling you what’s going on at the Rezzed PC gaming show in Brighton this weekend, but as something of a moveable feast the announcements have usually been as fresh to us as they are to the people we bellow them at. There’s not much left to announce now, but there are a few important, hitherto undisclosed treats which bear your attention. Specifically, the Leftfield Collection of smart, inventive, atmospheric indie games, the boardgames area and a hyper-speed live gamejam.

Rezzed: 5th RPS Indie Mud Wrestling Championships

This is the real reason to be there.

Oh good gracious, Rezzed is this week. Friday and Saturday, in fact. And if the line-up wasn’t already flipping impressive enough for you (playable Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Prison Architect, Natural Selection 2, Xenonauts, Skulls Of The Shogun, and tons more, along with speakers like Peter Molyneux, Randy Pitchfork, and RPS’s very own game jam), it just got one hundred and seventy three thousand times better. Yes, we’ve waited until almost the last moment to organise announce the greatest event of them all: The 5th Annual International Rock, Paper, Shotgun Indie Mud Wrestling Championships.
