River City Ransom Underground pulled from sale following copyright claims

Retro beat ’em up River City Ransom Underground [official site] has been pulled from sale on Steam, following a legal tussle over rights to music used in the game. The game’s composer, Alex Mauer, has used the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to make claims against YouTube videos of the game and seemingly escalated to taking down the game itself. Developers Conatus Creative seem confident that the game will be back on sale soon. Previous DMCA complaints from Mauer knocked another game using music she composed, Starr Mazer: DSP, off sale but that has since returned. Read the rest of this entry »

River City Ransom: Underground resumes retro beatings

The old-school biff-bopping of a beloved NES beat ’em up has resumed with the release of River City Ransom: Underground [official site], an official licensed revival. It bleeps! It bloops! It barfs! Watching a new trailer, I am delighted by the combination of acrobatic attacks and enemies pulling goofy slack-jawed faces as they’re biffed about. Have a look: Read the rest of this entry »

The pitch for the Kickstarter is below, as well as an explanation to why it made me nostalgic for a completely different game.

BARF: River City Ransom Sequel Incoming

Yesterday, as I was picking through piles of retro Kickstarter projects, I commented that some series, such as Mega Man and Zelda, hadn’t been part of my childhood and therefore didn’t tug at the sepia strings of nostalgia. I do have a soft spot as wide as Totoro’s belly for River City Ransom though. There simply aren’t enough open world beat ’em ups with basic RPG features. There have been rumours of a sequel for some time but the latest confirmation, from Combit Studios, pitches the licensed successor as a PC game, launching in August 2014, with a crowdfunding campaign to begin this summer.
