Adventure with the RPS community in Guild Wars 2 on Saturday

A group of RPS readers are embarking upon a merry tour of Guild Wars 2 this weekend, and you’re all invited – no purchase necessary. The folks of Rock, Paper, Signet are visiting the American servers for the first time for a whistlestop ‘Fresh Start’ tour of each race’s starting zone. Expect adventure, action, and plenty of larking about. Focusing on the starting zones means all and sundry can join in with only the free version of Guild Wars 2. Here, see some of there adventures from the last tour in this trailer by community member ‘Ravbek’: Read the rest of this entry »

The power of gaming communities

For three years, many of my evenings and weekends have been spent online with the Rock, Paper, Shotgun community – posting announcements, managing servers, and hosting events. By doing this I’ve met hundreds of people and have developed some great friendships. I’ve enhanced the experience of playing games for myself and others, and in the process I’ve gained skills to progress my career in ‘real life’.

My experience is not unique. I’m here to convince you of the power of getting involved in gaming communities – and that game developers should take more responsibility for fostering and highlighting what their community is doing.

Merry Horacemas Readers: We Love You!

Ho flipping ho, readers, it’s CHRISTMAS! Team RPS are currently all frantically tearing the hides off their bucket of gifts from Horace, preparing themselves for the Great Slaughter. We hope you’re enjoying the holidays in whatever godforsaken way you celebrate them, whether it’s a traditional British burning of a scallywag, a big ol’ American family game of Slops, or Lithuanian laser fights. Perhaps there are other countries too – we haven’t looked. But wherever you are, however tall you are, we wish you the very best glad tidings and other seasonal merriment.

While we weave elaborate cutaneous cocoons about ourselves, in preparation for our re-emerging on the 4th Jan as even more beautiful ultroflies, RPS shall not be quiet. We’ve a wealth of posts coming your way over the next week and a half, ensuring your continued obligatory loyalty and Google Analytics upkeep. And we’d also like to wish you a very enormous thank you.

A Night With The RPS Arma Community, Folk ARPS

There was a shot. It was not the sound guns make in Call of Duty or Battlefield. It was more of a sugar stick snapping or stretched bones cracking. Sparks was still running, his back occasionally illuminated by passing bullets. Careful, considered commands still coming over comms. I, however, was not moving. My vision blurred, and I fell. A crack later, and I was no longer in first person – cast into spectator mode by death.

This is how my first mission with Folk ARPS, the Rock, Paper, Shotgun joint Arma 3 outfit, came to an end.

Here is how it began.

RPS Community Update: What You Did in Cities: Skylines, Guild Wars 2, PlanetSide 2 and GTA V

PlanetSide 2 Victory!

Hi folks!

I’m Scott and I help moderate the RPS community forum. There’s some great discussions going on over there but what I’m really interested in is what the members of the community do together – whether that’s in games or out of them. Every month I’m going to provide a summary of what RPSers have been up to and how you can get involved.

This month: Cities: Skylines [official site] succession games; our Guild Wars 2 [official site] guild get more involved in PvP; the PlanetSide 2 [official site] outfits do battle in a server smash; and how to join the capers of our Grand Theft Auto V [official site] crew.

Superfriends, Ho: RPS Supporter Program Update

Hello, friends, best friends and frenemies. Our new-fangled Supporter Program has been in full and healthy swing for a little while now, so I thought I’d encourage even more people to join the thousands who have already signed up, and elaborate a little more on all the lovely things the scheme offers.

The Supporter program is an entirely optional way of getting extra-involved with RPS, and while it doesn’t take anything away from the main site, the idea is that proceeds from it will fund the additional exclusive articles we write for Supporters, selected highlights from which will appear on the main site later on, and enable us to commission out more ambitious features, from great writers, which will appear on the RPS’s front page for everyone.

A Brief Survey Of RPS Community Stuff

The Community parlor, for smoking and petting of hounds.
Right then, there’s quite a bit of multiplayer gaming go on around the RPS community, and there should be something there for most folks who want to get involved in such activities. Your first port of all should be the forums, where you can see things like a Neptune’s Pride being organised. There are a few big sub-communities on there, such as the Unofficial Minecraft server, which is VERY good, and also the Blood Bowl league, which I believe is one of the biggest, if not the biggest community Blood Bowl league. Notice Arma 2 has its own sub-forum? That’s because they’ve got a big old Mumble server they use for all kinds of games, and are organising regular Arma 2 missions on their server. It’s a splendid community that we are really proud of. Especially since it’s almost entirely down to you guys. Hell, there’s even real life stuff in them there forums, too, such as the London social club. A regular outing!

Then, of course, there’s the rest of the internet, including our Steam group, which occasionally helps us organise games. You can follow all the RPS writers on Twitter, here, here, here, and here. Are you running a community or event for RPS readers? Speak up now!

Arma II: OA Event Tomorrow. Or Not.

Men and their guns, together at last.
UPDATE TWO: Oh dear. Problems with the server for this means we’re going to have to postpone. Again. I know, apologies! I’m going to have to get RPS its own games box for these kinds of eventualities! Sorry about this. We will get our Arma 2 game soon. More details later.

UPDATE: Apologies for lack of information! I’m having some last minute problems with the server for this. If you have a private OA server, now would be a good time to speak up. More information soon!

Just a quick reminder for folks who won copies of A2OA in our recent competition that we have having a little multiplayer event tomorrow from 2pm BST. I will be editing the server details into this post a bit closer to that time, so come here for organisational whatnots.

Also! If you are an A2OA owner and want to come along, there will likely be additional spaces to play with us later on, and we’ll probably open it up on the Steam Group once the winning posse are all connected. Needless to say, everyone should get the latest patch, and places for non-winners can’t be guaranteed.

A2OA Compo: Winners And Postponement!

So, the hurrah/bah list for this competition. Hurrah: winners of the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead competition will be receiving their codes and links this afternoon. Bah: We’re going to have to postpone the actual co-op game until the 29th of August, despite having asked everyone who be available tomorrow. Hurrah: That gives you all some time to practice. Bah: But perhaps some folks will be busy that weekend.

Anyway, read on below for more information and winners.

RPS Eve Community Doing Okay

I just wanted to remind fence-sitters and ditherers that RPS reader “Dave” is running an Eve Online corporation for us, and you can find out more about it over on the forum thread. The in-game chat channel is “RPS Community”. It’s welcoming players new and old, and is now up to almost a hundred members. In fact, MMO guilds and clans from any game should feel free to post in that subforum if you’re friendly to RPS newbies. Come on folks, help your fellow gamers find a home in the games they want to play.

I’ve also used this article as an excuse to post a trailer for Eve that was released this summer (below). It only took them six years, but CCP have finally created a trailer that captures some of the reason why Eve is an interesting game to play.
