I have a question for you. Currently we run servers for Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Minecraft. If we were to start another community server, what should it be? Your suggestions please, readers.

This week the RPS Game Club will be celebrating our love of men with guns in a Men & Guns Manshoot Weekend Special. We’ve got two servers that are intended solely for the purpose of shooting men. They are:
The Team Fortress 2 Server: 188.8.131.52:27315
The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Server: 184.108.40.206:21467, actually you have to just search for this in the browser list, it’s called Rock, Paper, Shotgun of course. Search for Rock, to find it. It’s case sensitive, for some reason. Sigh.
Both provided by Multiplay! We will do war on those servers this coming Saturday and Sunday night (20th, 21st) from 7pm UK time. Choose your game, and JOIN US! (I’ll add some events on the Steam group as a reminder.)
Okay, so most of our games for this Game Club thing are going to be cheap or free, but there will be a few full-price excursions. One such is the first of our community-led evenings, which will take place on the Unofficial RPS Arma 2 server this coming weekend. To play on there you will need Operation Arrowhead patched up to 1.54, or whatever the latest is if BIS randomly release another one. The server can be found at “RockPaperShotgun – Unofficial edition” or 220.127.116.11:64738, and there is a mumble server at the same address. Password for both the server and Mumble is: rumpus
The server crew will be operating some big, organised (as much as these things can be) operations on both evenings of this coming weekend, 6th and 7th of November, starting between 18:00-19:00 UK. So come join in, it’ll be friendly and fun. I’ll be along on the Sunday night, myself. There’s an ongoing forum thread about all this general shooty business here.
SIGH: Seems most people are having connection issues. Which is a shame, because we are currently dogfighting inside a volcano. (Other maps may be less interesting.)
EDIT: I’ll be on at about 9pm UK time tonight. Americans maybe convene at 9pm EST for Stateside shooty?
The RPS Game Club is kicking off with some weekend DogFighter. Multiplay have provided us with two official servers to play on, one in London and one in Virginia, so UK and US players can both get reasonable ping times. You can see them in the in-game browser on the “dedicated” tab, named “Multiplay :: Rock, Paper, Shotgun”. DogFighter seems to have had some server wobbles over the past couple of days, but it’s looking much better now. It’s still super cheap if you want to join in.
Clearly we aren’t going to have enough space for everyone to get on the RPS servers, but jump on some of the other servers local to you and get in some fancy shootin’ if you can’t make it onto the RPS servers. I suspect quite a few people on there are going to be RPS readers, and if they’re not, well, they probably should be. I’ll be around over the whole weekend, so try not to put too many bullets my way. The RPS servers will be up for the coming month.
UPDATE: I just rebooted the servers, so they seem to be okay now. Let me know if there are any other hiccups.
RPS has occasionally managed to inspire some fine bouts of multiplayer gaming. Blood Bowl (or perhaps Solium Infernum) has become our national sport. The TF2 server has become the home of many fine hats, the Battlefield server has eaten a couple of hundred hours of my life, and the Arma 2 events have been exercises in ramshackle military awesomeness. But we want more. It’s time to get organised. We’re going to do this by stages. The first stage will consist in event days where we will select a game – one that is cheap, or free – and ask everyone who reads RPS to join their comrades in readership to come and play. The later stages… well, that would be telling.
So, without further ado, the first event is going to feature DogFighter. The game is currently astonishingly cheap on Steam (85% off) and we’re going to be playing it this coming Friday night and Saturday afternoon. That’s you, and me, and probably other people we don’t know particularly well. Saturday evening, of course, we will be dressing as lobsters and eating magic apples, but we ask you to join us before you head off to whatever it is you are doing for Halloween, and shoot me to bits in the skies of DogFighter. More details – servers, times, and such organisational stuff – will appear here as we proceed. Tally ho, and all that. I’m looking forward to this.
