Wot I Think: Shadowhand

shadowhand-review-1

Fans of bodices and inheritance might remember card game Regency Solitaire. Pip and Adam enjoyed looking for tea sets underneath piles of cards in that tale of gambling and gossiping. But I’m in charge of the card games now. So I get to review highway robbery follow-up Shadowhand. If I were a member of the polite, ball-attending society of the game I might say it was frightfully untaxing. But I’m not, thank fuck. So I can just say it’s boring. Read the rest of this entry »

Shadowhand stands to deliver on December 7th

Shadowhand

A long line of RPS writers (generations of em!) have been sharing their thoughts on Shadowhand, including an in-depth preview over the past couple years. It’s been fascinating watching Grey Alien’s game of card-based swashbucklery grow and evolve, and now the distinct and interestingly themed CCG has a release date.

December 7th seems to have a bit of a ‘powerful, dangerous women and the cards they deal’ theme, after that Reigns announcement. Hardly one to grumble about, I must admit. Plus, if you value neither your money and your life, you might want to read a little further; We’ve got a snazzy near-launch trailer showing off some of Shadowhand’s beautiful art, and no shortage of card-based conflict.

The PC games of 2017 mega-preview

As Old Father Time grabs his sickle and prepares to take ailing 2016 around the back of the barn for a big sleep, we’re looking to the future. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Here at RPS, our preparations come in the form of this enormous preview feature, which contains details on more than a hundred of the exciting games that are coming our way over the next twelve months. 2016 was a good one – in the world of games at least – but, ever the optimists, we’re hoping next year will be even better.

The real life of an indie game developer

I am fascinated by anything which let’s me peek behind the curtain of indie game development, whether it’s to see the effort that goes into making games or it’s a look at the realities of being in business for yourself. The video below falls into the latter category. It’s a 2016 GDC talk, posted to YouTube last month, in which Grey Alien Games’ Jake Birkett talks about how he survived in game development for eleven years without a hit. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, he’s the developer of Regency Solitaire, which was one of our favourite games of 2015.

Shadowhand: Dueling With Playing Cards In Georgian England

Remember how last year Adam and I got VERY into romance novel card game Regency Solitaire? Well, the developers, Grey Alien Games have been working on Shadowhand [official site] – a twist on the solitaire format which lets you duel enemies as an adventurous highwaywoman by playing cards.

I took the current demo build for a spin a month or two back but sat down for a proper chat with the studio’s owner Jake Birkett at GDC so we could talk about the game in more depth. Let’s start with the highwaywoman herself – who is the mysterious Shadowhand?

Shadowhand Shows Its Cards With First Trailer

Regency Solitaire took Castle Shotgun by surprise, and transformed it into a Victorian mansion for a while, all gossip and idle chat and falling in love with the cold and distant guy who secretly has deep passions but cannot show them because it’s not cool.

A few months ago, devs Grey Alien Games announced they were going to spice things up a bit and throw some action into the mix. Shadowhand [official site] reiterates on their card-game-plus-visual-novel formula, but pairs it with a darker setting of villains and outlaws, “mysterious woods and gloomy manors.” And now there’s a short trailer to show you how it’s shaping up.
