Team Sonic Racing coming from Sonic & All-Stars devs

Sonic is trading in his power sneakers for driving brogues again with a new kart racing game, Team Sonic Racing. Sega today announced the racer, which is coming this winter from Sumo Digital – the folks behind the unreasonably good Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Sadly, it seems Team Sonic Racing probably isn’t another big wacky Sega crossover but hey, it is more racing from Sumo. Read the rest of this entry »

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed turned the mascot racer into serious competition

sonic-racing-header

New Testaments is a monthly retrospective in which Amr Al-Aaser presents an overlooked modern game and champions its best ideas.

Sonic the Hedgehog might be fast, but he’s probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of top tier arcade racers. So it might catch you by surprise to find out that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed manages to not only build on the legacy of games like Outrun 2, Split Second and Blur, but takes the mascot racer, a genre that often aggravates players with its random elements, and turns it into a serious competitive racer. All while being an absurdly fun celebration of all things SEGA. Read the rest of this entry »

There’s a big Sonic the Hedgehog sale going on right now

11sonicmania

This fella, Sonic The Hedgehog, recently turned twenty-six years old, which means he’s fast-approaching the stage of his life where he’s not sure how long he can describe himself as being in his ‘mid-twenties’ and panics every time a survey asks him to select an age range: ’18-25′ is in the past, ’26-31′ is the new now. And should he listen to the people who say those red and white sneakers make him look like he’s trying a bit too hard?

While Sonic frowns into a mirror, you can save a bunch of money on a stack of games that star the little blue guy. Head to Bundle Stars and you’ll be able to pick up 17 different Sonic games with some nice discounts. That even includes Sonic Mania, which is something of a return to form. He might be getting older, but he can still recapture the glory days every once in a while.

The Segularity: Ryo Hazuki Added To Sonic All-Stars Racing

The Segularity? Shenmoving more like?

I thought I could let this pass without posting about it. It’s just a bit of character DLC for Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, a kart racing game few people other than me seem to love. But… it’s too good. It’s Shenmue’s Ryo Hazuki driving a transforming car/boat/plane modelled to look like an OutRun arcade cabinet. It’s beautiful. It’s the Sega singularity. I’ve recorded a video of me racing that OutRun arcade cabinet around an OutRun track while the game’s announcer calls out phrases like “Football Manager has gone All-Star!” and “Stickers unlocked!”

Play Sonic Racing Transformed For Free This Weekend

Crazy Taxi Boat is enough to make me play this all on its own.

I explode through the door. You’ve barely time to register the splintering hinges before I’m upon you, gripping your lapels and hoisting you out of your chair. I start to scream something at your face, shaking you to punctuate each word. You can barely make it out. SONIC– TRANSFORM– EKEND–

God, I smell terrible. I’ve been beneath the floorboards, doing whatever it is I do down there. But I’m repeating it again and you hear this time.

SONIC & ALL-STARS RACING TRANSFORMED IS FREE ON STEAM THIS WEEKEND.

Total(ed) War: TF2, Shogun 2 Join Sonic Racing

Naturally, Heavy's boat is propelled by miniguns.

You can’t make this stuff up. Well, I mean, I suppose it’s technically possible. I could tell you, right now, that the puck from Ricochet will be getting its own talk show on Adult Swim this fall. But is it really that much more preposterous than a Football Manager (no, not player) plying some variety of ball-based voodoo magic  in Sonic And All Stars Racing: Transformed? With Team Fortress 2’s Heavy, Spy, and Pyro, and Shogun: Total War 2’s, er, Shogun in tow, no less? Here, though, is the absolute craziest part of all: The blue-blur-themed kart racer’s apparently kind of amazing.

Fast And The Furrious: Sonic Racing Transformed

The Grand Canyon post-civilization-obliterating flood. A truly chilling look into the potential repercussions of global warming.

Yep, kart racing’s still a thing. And on PC too, which is a mild surprise. Admittedly, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – an unwieldy, tongue-slicing mouthful of a name if ever there was one – sounds kind of interesting, if only because vehicles can go all Optimus Prime mid-race. And by that, I of course mean that you’ll (automatically) morph into a boat or plane during certain portions of each implausibly geographically varied map – not an exploding special effects robot. Also, the original was apparently a solid, if somewhat derivative spin on the candy coated roadrage formula, and since Mario’s probably not bringing his multi-sport playboy conga line through these parts any time soon, we’ll just have to settle for his blue nemesis/Olympic figure skating partner. Morph this post into whatever your heart desires after the break – assuming, of course, that your heart desires a Sonic trailer, the greatest of all human needs.
