Wot I Think: Lara Croft GO

It sounds like hyperbole to say it, but I think Lara Croft GO [official site] is about as close to perfect as games can get. It’s also something of a backhanded compliment, because so often what we love, what stands out most about games, is where their ambition reaches beyond their potential for perfection. But at achieving its aims, at delivering within its own boundaries, LCGO is hard to fault at any level. So with perhaps the surprise taken out of the question, here’s wot I think: Read the rest of this entry »

Lara Croft Go swings to a proper PC release

Lara Croft Go [official site, the tomb-raiding puzzle game spin-off in the same turn-based vein as Hitman Go, finally has a proper PC release. While I was off on my hols scrambling up hills and round waterfalls last week, she arrived on Steam doing much the same. John is a big fan of it on Android so coo, I’ll have to check out this Alice copycat’s antics. I wonder if she also gets vertigo and clings cussing to safety railings. Read the rest of this entry »

Have You Played… Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Human Revolution has myriad faults, but they hardly matter to me. Square Enix Montreal’s first crack at replicating Deus Ex is a perfect example of how the right creative decisions can make up for any number of constraints.

Hitman GO: Definitive Edition Sneaks Onto PC

As promised, the ‘Definitive Edition’ of Hitman Go [official site] is upon us. Not in a ‘sneak up, choke us out, strip us to our pants, and toss us into the bin while it goes and hangs out with our pals’ sort of upon us, just… out. It’s out. Square Enix have released the video game. Nothing weird. Hitman Go: Def Ed is a fancied-up port of the mobile game which sees Ian Hitman taking down targets through turn-based sneak-o-killing in pretty little dioramas. They really are quite pretty. The murder’s not bad either.

Hitman Go: Definitive Edition Sneaks Out Next Week

Hitman Go [official site] is a pretty little take on the murder simulator, reimagining it as a turn-based puzzle game of sorts for pocket telephones. It looks like lovely murderdioramas. It’s been on PC for a fair while, for newer versions of Windows through the Windows Store, but I forget about that because I forget about the Windows Store. Not sure I’ve ever used it. (Lara Croft Go is there too, you know.) But now it’s getting a more formal PC release through a ‘Definitive Edition’ next week.

While We Wait: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

When is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided [official site] coming out? Not that soon. Not soon enough. But while we can’t magically give it to you to play now, now, now, we can give you a fun selection of things that will help keep the cravings at bay. From games to books and beyond, here are some recommendations for both getting into the cyberpunk, mechanical and freedom loving mood. Got any others to suggest? Let us know in the comments. For now though, grab your wallet and prepare to enter the future… even if you can probably do without something kinda like Adam Jensen’s coat. (Nobody asked for that*.)

You Can Complete Deus Ex Mankind Divided Without Killing Anyone, Even The Bosses

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided [official site] can be completed without killing anyone – even the bosses. This as confirmed by the game’s Executive Game Director, Jean-François Dugas, in a tweet responding to the question. If you’re a fan or familiar with Deus Ex, or particularly Human Revolution, then you’ll understand why this is significant news. If not I’ll explain below.
