Starcraft Universe: Hands On With The Open Beta

I think one of my favourite things about seeing a game jump genre is what it means for the ground-level stuff. An Ultralisk is never going to be scary, viewed from top-down, with a small army at your disposal. Leering down at you, with so many hit-points that the mission is more about distracting it, it becomes a very different matter.

Ever since World of Warcraft landed, Blizzard fans have longed, nay, demanded the chance to go on similar RPG adventures in the company’s other beloved series – The Lost Vikings. Sadly, today is not that day. However, a few days ago one of the most exciting fan-projects to remind people that the Starcraft II arcade exists hit a pretty big milestone – Starcraft Universe: Beyond Koprulu went into open beta, with the full game due in a couple of weeks. While I’m sure we’ll have some more on it then, not least because ‘open beta’ turned out to consist of a lot less content than I was expecting after playing through the three extremely long ‘prologues’, I went to take a peek.

StarCraft Universe: The “MMO” That Blizzard Let Live

StarCraft Universe [official site], the free multiplayer RPG that has been built as a StarCraft II mod, is finally due to come out next month, after an eventful 5-year development. On top of that, the open beta is now live and can be played through the StarCraft II Arcade right now. You can even play with its free Starter Edition.

It’s been a strange ride for this not-quite-MMO, including legal scares, name changes and a Kickstarter. What’s all the fuss about? Come here and I’ll tell you.

Kickstar(craf)ter: StarCraft Universe Goes To Kickstarter

Hmmm, well, this is sort of an odd situation. Once upon a time, Blizzard nearly fired a legal laser straight through the heart of StarCraft Universe‘s  modswarm, but now – a couple years later – the multiplayer RPG is alive, well, and on Kickstarter. The project apparently still has Blizzard’s blessing, given that it’s fan-made and will be distributed entirely for free. However, somewhat paradoxically, it’s also asking for $80,000 from Kickstarter’s writhing moneydollar hivemind. So long as Blizzard’s on board, developer Upheaval Arts is legally in the clear, but this whole situation raises some rather pressing questions.

Power MMOverwhelming: StarCraft Universe Prologue Live

On today's episode of When Things Look Bizarrely Similar For No Real Explicable Reason:

StarCraft Universe is a fan-made StarCraft MMO and – in all likelihood – the closest thing to World of StarCraft we’re gonna get until Blizzard realizes it wants all the money instead of just most of it. You might find it a bit weird, then, that StarCraft Universe – Chronicles of Fate is entirely single-player. But paving over a fundamentally RTS-focused engine with an entirely different genre is apparently a slightly complicated process, so developer Upheaval Arts is taking baby steps. But hey, that still means we get an (admittedly WoW-ish) single-player StarCraft RPG in the meantime. Worse things have happened. Maybe. I assume.

Starcraft Universe PvP Test Playable Now

If only we could talk to the Protoss.
One of Starcraft II’s big boasts was how awesome its editor was going to be for making your own games and such. We’re just starting to see the fruits of that. One group of modders took Blizzard up on the challenge and got on with creating a Starcraft MMO. After some initial legal wobbles, the mod is now approved by Blizzard, and it’s PvP mode is now undergoing a beta test. World Of StarCraft StarCraft Universe

Does this count as staring eyes? I don't think it does.

Were you following the World Of StarCraft debacle a few weeks back? Dude says he’s making an MMO using the StarCraft map makerer, says he’s calling it World Of StarCraft. Blizzard opens its mighty mouth and roars, scaring everyone with its sharp, pointy teeth. Internet cries “foul!”, everyone panics, dude gets hired by a developer, Blizzard says it was just yawning and that its teeth are mostly for display purposes, and we all sit back down. It’s the story of the internet. Well, the further good news is that the project is continuing with Blizzard’s raised eyebrow of approval under the name, StarCraft Universe.

Blizzard Offers MMO Modder Mercy

The StarCraft MMO mod wrangle looks to have resolved itself overnight, with Blizzard finally offering a comment beyond a scary form DMCA notice. In a statement released to all sorts of places last night, they confirmed they’re not going to block the mod’s ongoing development. While the unwise ‘World of StarCraft’ name was, unsurprisingly, key to the issue, a comment from modder Ryan Winzen suggests that the other side made a bit of a boo-boo too…
