Starsector Is A Singleplayer Strategic Space RPG

We’ve written about Starsector [official site] before. It went by a different name then, starfarer, but it’s the same densely packed space RPG today as it was back then. More so, in fact, thanks to the recent release of version 0.7a, which added new ships, weapons, system-specific abilities, sensor mechanics, space terrain and recruitable combat officers, along with even bigger battles. I haven’t played for a couple of years but found the focus on singleplayer and ability to command fleets very compelling. I’m keen to see more.

Fair Of Face, Filled With Space: Starfarer

Whimper, whimper, BANG

I’d been meaning to try Starfarer since Jim first wrote about it and when I noticed that an update had added the beginnings of the campaign, it seemed only polite to indulge in some tactical ship-bothering. I was hoping for something that mixed my favourite parts of Space Rangers 2, Space Pirates and Zombies, Gratuitous Space Battles and Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. Basically, all my favourite top-down space games. The current version, which is available to anyone willing to part with a $10 preorder, is shaping up to be rather splendid, but can it really be the best bits of the best things? Observe.

But How Will It Fare? Starfarer

Okay, so Starfarer – which is in development, but playable now with a pre-order – looks like the kind of game we don’t see enough of. It’s a 2D space trading and fighting sort of game. The devs explain that it is “a single-player sandbox style space role-playing game with strategic elements.” That sounds good, eh? And then there’s “a procedurally generated sector of the galaxy, seeded with well-known core worlds and factions.” Hmm! Sounds like my kind of thing. I am going to get hold of it and take a look more detail. In the meantime have a look at the trailer, below…
