Cody comes to Street Fighter V, brings a mayoral pipe

“I’ve saved the city, saved the girl, but couldn’t save… myself”
– Cody Travers, mayor/prisoner

Rub some chalk on your bods, biffing fans. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition has released its latest character, Cody, a street brawler who has gone from being a prisoner to a politician. Yeah, that old revolving door. Capcom have released a trailer for him, which briefly features a live action Cody that has 100% resemblance to the fighting game character and I won’t tolerate any of you saying otherwise. Electric green man Blanka finally returns to Street Fighter

Blanka

It’s better to be fashionably late than a total no-show. Blanka’s absence from Street Fighter V at launch was a bitter pill to swallow, but everyone’s favourite weird Brazillian jungle-monster-man is back today and on form.

Rejoining the likes of Ryu and Dhalsim and a few other frenemies from the good old days of Street Fighter 2, Blanka has picked up a few new tricks and some impressive costumes on the way, including one very, very silly one..

Blanka lights up Street Fighter V next week

street-fighter-v-blanka-1

It’s the big mon himself. Blanka, the beast-like brawler who first appeared in Street Fighter II, is coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition next week, on February 20. He’s still got them electrics, he’s still likes to roll around and savage his opponents with his claws, and he’s still upset at the world for accidentally leaving him in the Amazon jungle for most of his formative years. But maybe that’s all about to change in his upcoming story mode. “One day,” says a post from Capcom, “a suspicious salesman approaches him and offers a way to make Blanka famous by mass producing a doll made in Blanka’s likeness.” Wanna see Blanka dressed up as that doll? I have a picture right here. Read the rest of this entry »

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition patch notes punch out

While Capcom are holding true to their promise that Street Fighter V would be the one and only version of SF5 you need to buy, they can’t resist their old habit of slapping on modifiers to create increasingly ludicrous names. Next week Capcom will launch Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, a big free update adding new modes to the fighting game as well as giving balance a kick up the bum. Ahead of the launch, they’ve whacked out the patch notes so fightfans can pop their monocles at number changes and frown at how vague some of the details are. Read the rest of this entry »

Spinning bot kick: Street Fighter Transformers are a real, official thing, somehow

street-fighter-transformers

Sometimes, fictional worlds collide because a movie executive figures there’s a ton of green to be made from a bunch of superheroes frowning at each other. Sometimes, they collide because a toy designer has a brilliantly stupid idea in the shower. Ladies and germs, I give you Street Fighter x Transformers, which stars, amongst others, Optimus Prime as Ryu, Megatron as M.Bison and Hot Rod as Ken, complete with the eyebrows.

This is, I promise you, a real, official thing. And yes, they all transform into various cars, tanks, planes and trucks. Some of them have detachable heads that also transform into tiny versions of Ryu’n’crew. It’s terrible! It’s wonderful! Naturally, I want them all.

Street Fighter V gets ‘Ever-Changing Ninja’ Zeku today

Ninja arm!

Punchfest of punchfests Street Fighter V is getting a new character today. The beater-upper is called Zeku and he’s some sort of ninja man, with the ability to change forms and use a whole other moveset. Ka-pow. If you’re squinting at him desperately trying to remember where you’ve met, before he comes over and strikes up a conversation, that’ll be because he previously appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 2 (albeit as a non-playable character). He’s a strong man. The Street Fighter wiki lists his skills as “Appraising antiques” and “eating fast”. Read the rest of this entry »

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition bringing new modes & moves free in January

Capcom today announced Street Fighter V [official site] will get new modes and V-Trigger moves in January with the launch of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and- wait wait wait. Capcom had promised that Street Fighter V would not receive a squillion incompatible standalone editions, as past games in the fighting game series have, and they meant it. Arcade Edition’s new bits will come in a free update for all SFV players, and the Fancy Name mostly means SFV is getting a new release for new players which includes instant unlocks of its first two seasons of extra characters. Everyone can still punch everyone. No one need buy anything new. Read the rest of this entry »

BBC Three showing live esports for next six weekends

05rocketleague

Well, East me Enders and Pano my Rama: live Esports is coming to to the BBC this month. BBC Three (which is now online only) will broadcast the new Gfinity Elite League Series One, which means four hours of Rocket League, CS:GO and Street Fighter V on iPlayer every weekend for the next six weeks.

There’s a proper schedule and everything: Fridays at 9pm is for Street Fighter, which in a massive programming screw up clashes with Gardener’s World. Saturday nights from 9-11 is CS:GO (no Casualty for me then), and Rocket League is happening Sunday afternoon from 5. It’s all coming live from the Gfinity Arena in West London, with eight organisations taking part.

THE BEEF THAT I HAVE WITH STREET FIGHTER V

SFV

Hello. Usually I write perky upbeat stories about plants and walks but today I have BEEF. It is BEEF with Capcom about a missed opportunity in Street Fighter V [official site]! SO much BEEF I could open a butcher shop or a steak restaurant. It is BEEF so important it warranted a trip to Photoshop to rectify the situation AND I had to remember how to use the color layer mode.

First: context. Read the rest of this entry »

Ice to meet you! Next Street Fighter V character is Kolin

The next pugilist joining the Street Fighter V [official site] roster is someone old, someone new, someone bearfriendly [nice -ed.] and someone blue. Capcom have announced that they’re elevating background character Kolin to playable status, sending her out to ice fools with her cryokinetic powers. She was first introduced in 1997’s Street Fighter III as the personal assistant to one of those Illuminati naughties but will throw her fur hat into the ring on February 28th. Here, check out her chilly moves in this trailer: Read the rest of this entry »

Street Fighter 5 invokes Raging Demon, punishes rage quitting

Street Fighter 5 [official site] is sending mixed signals with its first content update of ‘Season 2’, adding returning fighter Akuma with his iconic ‘Raging Demon’ combo while also adding new punishments for rage quitting. So is rage good or bad? Perhaps the distinction is that it’s fine if you hang around to pose moodily at the end. The update launches today, also rebalancing a bit and adding official support for Direct Input controllers. Oh, and a sleighload of Christmassy paid costumes. Read the rest of this entry »

Street Fighter 5 kicking off Season 2 with Akuma

Continuing plans to update Street Fighter 5 [official site] for yonks without releasing separate new Ultra Turbo Mega Editions, Capcom have announced ‘Season 2’ of big content updates will kick off this month with returning pugilist Akuma and a sleighload of festive fare. Punchfans will remember Akuma as a sort of Infowars Ryu. Five brand new fighters are due to follow across 2017, though they’re under wraps for now. But far more important than that is everyone’s wacky Christmas premium costumes. Read the rest of this entry »

Vomit comet: Street Fighter V aerial level pulled from tournaments

When Capcom discovered that a Street Fighter V [official site] level set atop a plane flying over Dubai was disorienting some players and even making them motion-sick, they pulled it from their competitive tournament lineup. Cowards. What rotten cowards they are. With all their know-how, they surely could’ve figured out a way to even the playing field by making all players equally ill. It’d certainly shake up the competitive scene if, every third fight, players fell to the floor clawing at their eyes and clutching at their guts, using tongues to manipulate their controllers while also vomiting over them. Street Fighter V Removes Buggy New Anti-Crack Tech

Capcom have removed the mysterious “anti-crack solution” they added to Street Fighter V [official site] in this week’s update. We knew the September update would add Urien, the Illuminati VP returning from earlier games, and he’s quite welcome. What was more of a surprise is the anti-crack tech that left some unable to play, triggered anti-virus and Windows warnings, and was generally unpleasant. That’s no good. But hey, at least they did remove it fairly swiftly.

Bif! Street Fighter V Adds Illuminati VP Urien This Month

We’re almost at the end of the content roadmap Capcom laid out for the first season of Street Fighter V [official site] updates. Since February they’ve added newbits including a story mode and five new characters, and a sixth is the last to come this season. This month’s new pugilist will be Urien, who I’m told bears the job title ‘Vice President of Illuminati’. The Illuminati must be far smaller than I’d thought if even the VP does hands-on field work – or maybe this is recreational? Anyway, check out his moves:

Kick-o! Street Fighter V Adding Juri On Tuesday

This month’s Street Fighter V [official site] will launch on Tuesday, July 26th, Capcom have announced. The biggest addition is Juri joining the playable lineup, returning from Super Street Fighter IV. She’s already appeared in SFV through its Story Mode, released last month, but now everyone will get to kick faces as the Taekwondo expert (cheeky modders have enabled her earlier, mind). Here, this trailer shows some of her moves:

Street Fighter V: Balrog Arrives In Story Mode On Friday

We already knew that Street Fighter V‘s ‘cinematic story mode’ would bring with it a few new characters, including the opportunity to play as them before they’re added to the wider game. Now we have a trailer that shows boxer Balrog in motion, alongside a very brief glimpse of characters Juri and Urien, who are also joining the game.

Street Fighter V Story Mode Arrives End Of June

I will admit that my interest in this story mainly stemmed from the header image which I saw out of context and thought maybe there was a He-Man game about Skeletor having a clone army. BUT! it is infact the news that Street Fighter V [official site] is finally getting that promised story mode as a chunk of free DLC at the end of June for those who own the game:

Street Fighter V Flies In Guile, Rage Quit Punishment

X-COM cosplayer Guile arrived in Street Fighter V [official site] last night with the promised April update for Capcom’s fighting game. He’s leaping, he’s kicking, he’s flinging wind, he’s yelling his support for Sonic Boom as if it’s not the worst Sonic game in years. Guile is accompanied by a new stage, the Air Force base where he and his buddies hang around sitting on crates with a boombox. And hey, because Capcom still haven’t added the real-money microtransaction store, Guile is free to play with until they do. Oh, and rage quit punishment is finally in.
