It’s quickly becoming A Thing in some circles that when you announce a sequel, you just throw the original at people for free. That’s definitely what Awesomenauts studio¬† Ronimo are doing today. Alongside the announcement a PC launch (it’s been out on consoles for yonks) for silly side-scrolling strategy game Swords & Soldiers 2: Shawarmageddon, they’ve made the original Swords and Soldiers HD¬†free to grab on Steam for the next 24 hours and keep forever. So go do that.

Wot I Think: Swords & Soldiers HD

Side-scrolling indie strategy oddity Swords & Soldiers gets unlocked on Steam in ooh, three hours – having been ported to our personal computing machines following a warm reception on WiiWare. This version features sparklier graphics and the addition of multiplayer, as it’s mercifully no longer bound to a device that’s afraid of the internet. I’ve thrown a few hours at throwing lines of 2D troopers at each other, which leaves me rather conviently placed to share some manner of opinion with you.

Swords And Soldiers HD Out Dec 1st

Stripped down, side-scrolling RTS Swords and Soldiers HD was meant to be out back in September. Now we hear it’s arriving on December 1st. Lucky for developers Ronimo Games the RPS dogma is big on forgiveness specifically when it comes to games containing Vikings. RPS First Vandalism Battalion? At ease.

This game managed to raise Alec’s tired robotic eyebrow when he saw it back at GamesCom ’10, and I think it looks fun too. For those of you with troubled attention spans I’ve re-posted a trailer below.

Swords & Soldiers (& Vikings & Monkeys)

Something else I curiously pointed my eyes at whilst dashing around GamesCom’s titanic floorspace was Dutch indie studio Ronimo’s side-on strategy title Swords & Soldiers. Which, if you ask me, is a name that rather undersells a game about giants, monkeys and clouds made of angry vikings…
