What’s The Genre You Never Thought You’d Like?

I was certain I’d never have any time for roguelites. To clear up confusion about this most ambiguous of genres, by this I mean games that have permanent or mostly permanent death states, where losing means starting again from the beginning, with finite resources, and not necessarily any end goal. In fact, if you’d asked me a few years back, I’d have said this was the antithesis of why I play games.

Being bad at something doesn’t always mean it’s not enjoyable. And that’s never more the case than when there’s not an opponent to let down or feel crushed by. In the solitary land of single-player video games, it’s very possible to be absolutely dreadful at a game and yet adore playing it. Perhaps it’s even possible in multiplayer gaming too?

For me, the best example is Teleglitch. I’m not even going to tell you how embarrassingly far I’ve gotten into that game, but I’ve played it so much. But what is it for you?

Teleglitch [official site] is one of the most difficult games I’ve ever played and it might also be one of the best. It plays out like a top-down Doom if Doom were about a terrified survivor of the Phobos incident rather than a rugged space marine.

Top-Down Terror: Noct, Teleglitch And Darkwood

Noct [official site] is a top-down horror game in the tradition of Teleglitch and Alien Breed. It’s grainy, thermal-imaged satellite-view is the antithesis of a sedate bird’s-eye-view, stripping away tactical oversight and contemplation. Noct is one of several recent games to create a tense and claustrophobic experience by twisting a typically expansive, liberating and distancing viewpoint. We covered it when it arrived on Kickstarter and since then it’s been picked up by Devolver and is preparing to enter Early Access. It looks splendid, as you can see for yourself in the embedded footage and teaser trailer below.

Cult Development: A Paradox Profile

“We don’t want to be a cult.” Shams Jorjani is VP of Acquisition and Portfolio Strategy at Paradox Interactive. He’s the guy who reads through and listens to a thousand MOBA pitches and occasionally finds a Teleglitch hidden behind them. He laughs at the cult line as soon as its out there. This, after all, is a company that frequently dresses its employees in coloured wizard robes, faces concealed.

Cultish maybe. Cult adjective rather than cult noun. Bruce Campbell’s career rather than Tom Cruise’s alternate career.
