The Curse of Monkey Island sails to Steam and GOG

While half the RPS treehouse is swabbing the poop deck in Sea Of Thieves, today a truly mighty pirate has returned. Guybrush Threepwood’s third adventure, The Curse Of Monkey Island, is now available on digital stores after years lost drifting in the Cybergasso Sea. Until now, the best ways to get ahold of the 1997 LucasArts adventure game were to deal with the freebooters on Amazon and eBay or to become a pirate yourself. “It’s important to admit when you’re wrong,” wrote John when he revisited The Curse of Monkey Island years after release only to realise it was better than he’d remembered. It’s also important to shout about when you’re right, though: I always liked the third Monkey Island game.

Magical: Monkey Island’s Insult Swordfighting For Browser

It is one of the industry’s greatest crimes, I think, that the majority of games with swordfighting don’t include any sort of insult component. I mean, seriously: what happened? Where did we go wrong? I like to imagine that, off in some wonderful alternate dimension, things went the opposite way. People traded swords for words, and dairy farmers the world over reported an all-time low of self-esteem. In the dreary, sass-less dystopia we call reality, however, there is one shimmering lighthouse beacon of hope: a free browser-based version of Monkey Island 1 and 3’s classic variations on the theme. We can only pray that everyone who’s even the least bit interested in the oh-so-sensual art of swapping steel takes note this time around.

Eurogamer Retro: Curse Of Monkey Island

That's the second insult swordfight I've ever seen.

It’s important to admit when you’re wrong. All my life I’ve maintained that The Curse Of Monkey Island was rubbish. So I went back to check, and found out that, well, it’s not. So many of the puzzles are. The tacky line drawings often are. But it’s a better game than I’d remembered. I write all about it over at Eurogamer, including this representative paragraph:

With series regulars like the Voodoo Lady and Stan appearing, now it seems daft that the game works so hard to reintroduce them. But with over half a decade having passed, a good proportion of the potential audience wouldn’t have had any idea who they were. Plus a lot of the references were starting to feel dated back then and now seem positively archaic.

During my eighties childhood, about 70 per cent of the programmes I watched included quicksand at some point. To misquote comedian Adam Carolla, until the age of 10 I was certain I was either going to die by falling in quicksand or by being eaten by cannibals who would first make me their god. Now, outside of madman Bear Grills’ on-screen suicide attempts, there’s not a drip of quicksand to be found. And worrying about being eaten by cannibals is perhaps considered culturally insensitive.
