In Celebration Of Perfectly Average Action Games

We don’t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much.

There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game.

Humble 2K Bundle Offers Spec Ops The Line For A Dollar

The latest offering from Humble Bundle is a stack of 2K games, including third-person horrors-of-war shooter, Spec Ops: The Line [official site] in the lowest tier. That’s yours for a dollar or more but (the horror, the HORROR) you’ll have to take a copy of Duke Nukem Forever as well. The Darkness 2 is the much more palatable final third of that one dollar selection. Jumping to the next tier, with a minimum buy-in of $8.37, gets you a copy of Civ V, NBA 2K16, Mafia II and…a Battleborn skin pack. Civ V is decent, even without the expansions, but I’d be tempted to wait until October for the sequel.

Spec Ops is the star here. At that price, it’s close to unmissable.

Wot I Think: The Darkness II

That was a bad scarf choice.

First-person shooter The Darkness II is out in the US, and tomorrow in the UK, and I’ve played it through to the gruesome end. Past the gruesome beginning, via the gruesome middle. How does all that grue hold up? Well, wipe away the lung and take a seat, and I’ll tell you Wot I Think.

Delicately Debating Darkness II’s Demo

Our Adam was supposed to be taking a look at the Darkness II right about now for a last preview before release, but he’s caught the bubonic plague or something and is currently desperately trying to stop his remaining organs from falling out of his body. So, in lieu of that, I’ve had a go at the demo that appeared on Xbox BOO Live HISS earlier today. It is due on PC, but Xbox FOR SHAME Live THE HORROR has an exclusive for a week, so we have to wait. What, exactly, are we waiting for? Well, when my 360 stopped red-ringing and managed to stay functional for a half-hour, I endeavoured to find out, by way of a prelude to the PC’s own demo.

Immediate thought: it’s so noisy! It’s so sweary! It’s so violent! Does old man Doom know that his kids have turned out like this? After all that sound and fury, I want to curl up in a corner and read Jane Austen books until I feel civilised again.

The Darkness II Co-Op Contains Festive Fun

Imagine I've photoshopped in a Santa hat. Japes!

It’s all sleigh bells ring-a-ding-jingling and jolly little scamps scurrying about the place in search of the true meaning of Christmas in these latest trailers for The Darkness II. Except for all the evisceration, shooting-in-the-face and limb-lopping, which is what you’ll see for every single second that isn’t a series of logos angrier than Mr Angrylad Furyface from Hateville, Nebraskinforabeating. That actually leaves precisely no room for festive fun of the seasonal variety, but plenty for those who celebrate the cathartic kiss of axe and intestine. These are the murderous folk available in the recently revealed co-op mode.
