Could someone remake my favourite 90s games please?

With Full Throttle’s remastering out yesterday, it sets me off to thinking about what games I’d really like to see receive a similar treatment. It’s pretty easy to list off a bunch of other LucasArts adventures, because I would ADORE to see the wonderful The Dig in big pretties, or have Sam & Max in gorgeous clear stereo sound. (Imagine the songs without the hissing!) But that was a decade packed with games I loved that I know I’ll never play again, because I can’t be arsed fighting with DOSBox and ancient controls to play in a small corner of my screen. Good Ol’ Lucas: GoG Add Outlaws, Zak McKracken & Indy

GoG.com has just added six Lucasarts(films) games, three of which are enjoying their digital debut. The debutantes are 2.5 wild west shooter Outlaws, Zak McKracken And The Alien Mindbenders, and Indiana Jones And The Emperor’s Tomb. All three will make a smattering of people very excited until those same people actually take the time to revisit the games, at which point they’ll either loudly deny the trickery of nostalgia while pulling a face like a kid pretending to enjoy a Liquorice Allsort, or they’ll quietly mutter something about the “shuddering, shifting, deceitful veil that is memory” while weeping into a pint glass. Have You Played… The Dig?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Space! Often we go there in our spaceships to zoom about pew-pewing at one another, and other times we go there to have a big old think about life, the universe and everything. While The Dig is more the latter than the former, it’s not all contemplation and character study. Lucasarts’ sci-fi adventure is one of the earliest non-comedy point and click games I played, and despite some hideous puzzles, it’s one I’d still heartily recommend.

Eurogamer Retrospective: The Dig

The really rather special LucasArts adventure, The Dig, had me getting my retro hat and trousers on for Eurogamer. It begins,

Seeing the 15 to 20 year-old point-and-click adventures appearing in Steam’s top sellers warms my heart. There is still an audience for these games, and they don’t need them to be in 3D with volumetric physics and dynamic downloadable content. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis has, unsurprisingly, sold the most so far, but for me the game I was drawn to uncover from the archives was The Dig. Not because I have fond memories of it – I had almost no memories at all. But because when The Dig was released in 1995, it carried the weight of six years of expensive, over-hyped development around its neck, and was played under a cloud of preconceptions and prejudice.

I feel that I should restate where I write in the piece that I discuss events throughout the fifteen year old game, including the ending. People seem to be missing this, and then getting cross. It’s not a game that would have been interesting to write about if not discussing its entirety. So don’t read page 3 if you’re about to play the game. Or read it anyway and yell at me.
