What can PC RPGs learn from Zelda: Breath of the Wild?

Regardless of platform, when you’ve got so many people rushing to call a game ‘possibly the best game ever’, it’s worth taking a look. This week then, what can RPGs learn from the 1994’s Rise of the Robots – the action brawler that combined ugly rendered graphics with ridiculous AI, and a musical score produced by the Queen’s own Brian May sitting uncomfortably on his keyboard for a while.

Hmm. I can’t think of anything. Fine. Let’s talk about the new Zelda instead. In particular, how its devotion to freedom goes well beyond simply giving you a map to play. Inevitably, spoilers follow, though it’s not really a plot game. Neverthless:

ZeldaVR Ports The NES Original To First-Person Oculus Rift

Zelda? More like Celda.

Zelda games shall be forever gripped close to Nintendo’s chest, but remakes, demakes and homages frequently turn up on the shores of PC gaming. Zelda VR aims to re-build The Legend of Zelda – yeah, the original, top-down, NES Zelda – for virtual reality headsets.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bone
Legend of Zelda Minecraft! GameInformer gameinforms us that Minecraft modders Gary520 and Spirale have been working on a Zelda mod that is as close to a proper game as anything yet made in Notch’s blocky world. The trailer after the jump promises familiar locations, eight dungeons, over 10 hours of play and 20 weapons. There’s even a shield for batting away baddies.

A WASD To The Past – Zelda FPS

Fairy boy, fairy boy

Have a dash of Nintendo in your PC tea, with Michael Johnston’s fan-made, browser-based reimagining of the second NES Legend of Zelda game as an FPS of sorts. Large, flat open lands, caves and floaty heart icons, all from the player-perspective rather than a bird’s eye view. Dedicated/clever/fiddly/oddly grindy, but quite lovely in its strange past-meets-present genre-bending.
