Lovers of uncooked mushrooms may remember The Wild Eight, an extra-tough multiplayer survival game set in a frozen wasteland following a plane crash. I thought it wasn’t bad, even if your hunger bar drained faster than a broken bathtub. Since its release however, there seems to have been a split among its creators. It’s not clear what happened but the result is that the snowy game has been sold off to its publisher Hype Train Digital. In the meantime, the original developers, Fntastic, are off to make a new game, called Dead Dozen.

The Wild Eight lights its campfire in early access

Ah, sweet Alaska. Internationally renowned for its dangerously stupid hockey mums and Werner Herzog documentaries. It’s also the setting of top-down survival game The Wild Eight [official site] which has now sauntered into early access. I’ve only played a couple of hours so far but it is enough to know that surviving in Alaska is tough. Right from the moment you wake (amid flaming plane wreckage) you need to get busy hunting or get busy dying. I have died many many times. I don’t know how those hockey mums do it.

The PC games of 2017 mega-preview

As Old Father Time grabs his sickle and prepares to take ailing 2016 around the back of the barn for a big sleep, we’re looking to the future. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Here at RPS, our preparations come in the form of this enormous preview feature, which contains details on more than a hundred of the exciting games that are coming our way over the next twelve months. 2016 was a good one – in the world of games at least – but, ever the optimists, we’re hoping next year will be even better.
