In Celebration Of Perfectly Average Action Games

We don’t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much.

There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game.

The Trouble With Demos

The demo stands alone. In all of entertainment, with the possible and fairly rare exception of novel samplers, there’s nothing quite like it – it may be based on the same principles as a movie trailer or a single, but the execution and the eventual effect is entirely different. A movie trailer is a mash-up of the film’s best moments – often to the point that the film itself simply can’t measure up to that ninety seconds of concentrated bombast. A single is, in theory at least, the most immediate track from an album, the song that demonstrates that artist at the height of their abilities.

A demo? It’s got to do so much more than simply look cool or sound catchy. Read the rest of this entry »

Timeshift’s shifting development time.

This year’s a big one for FPS with enormously protracted development times from Ex-Soviet Nations. Clearly, there’s Ukraine’s STALKER, but Russia’s TimeShift had a similar lengthy trip from conception to completion, including Multiple Publishers and going back to the drawing board after it was completed back in 2006. What happened? Saber’s Andrey Iones talks about it all in a lengthy Gamasutra interview.

“In Russia, you can’t find people like designers and producers. They simply don’t exist, because there are no triple-A titles coming out of Russia. It’s simply a challenge. You have to bring these people in, and you have to train them so that they become triple-A developers. It’s much more than programming, because you have to have people with production skills and with designer skills. It’s really hard to come by those in Russia.”

Which is something I’ve heard off several Russian developers – that while the more technological people are fine, the actual designers are so thin on the ground due to a lack of a cultural history. Anyway, I suspect they’ll be some more about TimeShift in the next couple of weeks, when Alec’s review for Gamer comes online. He quite liked it. The Tennis is quite good.

World Laments FPS Shortage

Just in case your broadband was feeling neglected this week, the Timeshift demo also came out this weekend. You can grab the 983mb (65.5 Peggles) download from here.

It’s… actually not bad. It has a kind of explodey efficiency to it: high fights-per-second, or something. Nevertheless it’s not exactly going to carve itself into the bedrock of our collective memory. It’s not looking like a clear classic, but a shooter of medium proficiency. And that’s not simply the current embarrassment of riches talking – Timeshift really does seem a few strides short of the podium of greatness. It has a kind of clunkiness of design that’s holding it back.

Nevertheless the time stuff works. Yes, Prince Of Persia did rewinding time, and yes various other games did slowing down time. Timeshift is unlike any of them. You can stop time entirely and pull a gun from an unsuspecting soldier’s hands. You can slow time and dive through a fight like a lightning bolt. Unlike FEAR you have have to use the time powers, because otherwise the muscular men with guns are going to shred you. Timeshift feels like it’s playing to its own agenda, and that’s a good thing. Sure, it’s a shame the overall game is a little weaker than some of its buffed-up peers, but it’s still credible. The shooting is vicious, the physics are PHYSICS! and the big men die in a satisfying manner. Kieron has played a bit more of the full game than me, so he might be able to say more. Then again, he might not. Based on this taster, I’d be interested in reviewing the full thing. I reckon you should downloaded it and judge for yourself.

Okay. Am I the only person to find this advert for Timeshift rather peculiar?

They’ve chosen to make an advert for a videogame mostly in live action. Sure there’s some CGI in there but… whatwhat? Exactly how can that be said to advertise a videogame in any way? Isn’t it just a little creepy? Perhaps it’s not an advert at all, and they’ve accidentally broadcast an ultra-violent power-rangers fan movie.

In other news: we’re actually looking forward to Timeshift. Y’know: the game. We should have some more news on it soonish. (Probably – I mean it’s a safe bet, but not certain.)
