Tokyo RPG Factory’s Oninaki is out now

Square Enix's Tokyo RPG Factory today launched their third retro-styled RPG, Oninaki. Following I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear they are shaking things up a little, this time taking more an action-RPG angle. You can see some of that bif-boff-pow in the launch trailer below, and Oninaki does have a demo so you can try it yourself for free.

Square Enix JRPG Oninaki has a daemon-infested demo out now

Kagachi understands the freelance life. It's tough stuff, I know: trading out jobs, pushing yourself to breaking point. Allowing haunted fiends from beyond the grave to possess you and change your career goals. Don't believe me? You can put in an hour-and-a-half right now. Oninaki is the latest game from Square Enix's Tokyo RPG Factory - the bit of Squeenix that makes more of those…

I’m a big fan of these goblin lads from upcoming JRPG Oninaki

Do you ever get sold on a game purely on the strength of how its enemies look? I'm sure this happens to me a lot, but just off the top of my head, Killzone, XCOM, and Dark Souls all first got my attention this way. The trailer for Oninaki - an upcoming, classic-style JRPG from the I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear gang at Square Enix's Tokyo RPG…

E3 2019 games – every game confirmed

They just keep coming don't they? A lot of games were announced at E3 2019, things that we didn't know about, as well as stuff that's previously announced, or expansions to already released games. Now, to the casual outsider, what we're doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we'd put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to…

Feature: I am Satsuma

Have You Played… I Am Setsuna?

I am not Setsuna. I am also not a satsuma, but man alive wouldn't it be a better game if I was? Just imagine. A JRPG where one of the main characters was a round little orange, bopping along on their great pilgrimage across the land without a care in the world? I want to play that game. Unfortunately, we're stuck with I Am Setsuna,…

Lost Sphear review

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a ragtag group of orphans wake up one day and decide to slay some monsters, as all small-town gangs are wont to do. This is the opening of Lost Sphear. After bonking some bunny-mutants to death in a nearby field, they discover that their idyllic hometown has blinked out of existence, replaced by a gaping white void.…

Lost Sphear out now from I Am Setsuna studio

If you fancy JRPG action in a retro way, here's Lost Sphear out today. It's the second RPG from Square Enix's Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio behind I Am Setsuna, and it too riffs on ye olde JRPGs. I won't pretend to be well-acquainted with the genre but: yes, JRPG stuff. We do have a review coming from someone who actually knows a gad dang…

I Am Setsuna devs announce Lost Sphear

Tokyo RPG Factory, Square Enix's glamorously-named retro RPG studio behind 2016's I Am Setsuna, have announced their next game. Lost Sphear [official site] will be another throwback JRPG with some modern stylings, this time telling the tale of a lad trying to stop his world from vanishing. Squeenix say Lost Sphear is "expanding upon the beloved features" from I Am Satsuna, rather than being a…

I Am Setsuna review

I Am Setsuna is an attempt by Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory to recapture the glory days of the JRPG. From the mournful piano overlaying the title screen to the world map where your character stands tall like a rampaging kaiju next to a diorama village, it aims to intoxicate you with nuclear-grade nostalgia – but does it live up to their legacy or…

Feature: Hands on with Square's throwback RPG

I Am Setsuna Has A Few Twists On The JRPG Formula

Due on English-speaking shores this summer, Tokyo RPG Factory's I Am Setsuna is a charming throwback experience with one of the bleakest storylines I've come across. It takes place in a kingdom beset by monsters - if that's really the right word for the excitable penguins and shellfish you'll battle early on - who must be periodically appeased with a human sacrifice. The titular Setsuna…

Go West! JRPG I Am Setsuna Gets July Release Date

Against the welcomed deluge of classic Japanese games that've landed on western PCs recently, you'd be forgiven for assuming I Am Setsuna [official site] was another rejigged and repackaged oldie. It's not, though, and is in fact the work of Square Enix's Tokyo RPG Factory studio, a team who are inspired by the JRPG classics of yesteryear. I Am Setsuna is a throwback to those…

J-RPG I Am Setsuna Coming To PC In Summer

Sounds like we were just talking about nostalgia, and here we are again: Square Enix has opened an entire studio, tellingly named "Tokyo RPG Factory," to work on new titles "inspired by the golden era of Japanese role-playing games" like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. Their first work, I Am Setsuna (Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna in Japanese) [official site] was released in Japan in…
