Podcast: The best and worst of E3 2018

bge2-peyj

The festival of dumb explosions known as E3 is over, but that won’t stop us. The RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, goes deep into the show, picking out our favourite games, the oddest moments, and best rats (spoiler: it was the one crushed by a shelf in the Resident Evil 2 trailer). We’re also introducing two new voices this week. Who are these strange people? Read the rest of this entry »

The best games of E3 2018, from cyberpunks to twisters

cyberpunk-2077-interview-3

During this year’s E3, I saw the largest screen I’d ever witnessed, folded around the corner of a building like a giant piece of glowing paper. It told me to buy Nike. LA is already the neon futuretown of California, never mind Night City. But I didn’t just see ads for shoes at the LA convention centre, I saw a lot of games too. From the bustling streets of Cyberpunk 2077 to the twisting tornadoes of Just Cause 4. From the crumbling Capitol of The Division 2 to the clumsy motorcycling of Trials Rising. Here are my highlights from the game industry’s annual festival of bullets and colour, the sci-fi dystopia that was with us all along. Read the rest of this entry »

Every PC game at Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference

Ubisoft’s conference included everything we expected, from a closer look at Beyond Good & Evil 2, to confirmation of the leaked Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, to the now traditional (and delightful) Just Dance dancy party. If you don’t have time to watch the conference in its entirety however, here is a showcase of the trailers that were shown and links to the associated news from Ubisoft. The Division 2 adds raids and drops season passes

The Division 2

Tom Clancy’s shooty MMO-lite The Division 2 has a lot of endgame planned for those who burn through its main story, Ubisoft announced at their E3 press conference. After completing the story, you’ll get to choose a prestige class with its own dedicated special weapon, as well as unlocking a new set of “specialisations”. You’ll probably need a few of these extra ranks under your belt to tackle the new 8-player raids, which (if the high-level stuff in the first game was any indication) will put most squads through the wringer. It also looks like it’ll have a more reasonable approach to expansions and updates for dedicated players, saying many episodic updates will be free.

Every PC game at Microsoft’s E3 2018 conference

Microsoft had a lot of games to announce at E3 2018, but it’s a little murkier this year to find out what was relevant for PC users. Some games were coming to both, others only to their Xbox One consoles. You could of course watch the entire conference right here, but for some there just isn’t enough time to wade through the entire show.

Not to worry though, here are all the trailers and news for you in one place. There’s a surprising amount of variety in the announced titles: from an old favourite making a return, much celebrated developers showing off their new series, to even a completely free game launching very soon. The games below aren’t in any particular order but you’re in for a long ride.

The Division 2 fighting for Washington DC in 2019

Ubisoft today revealed The Division 2, continuing their near-future post-apocalyptic online open-world shooter-RPG series. This time, players will be fighting for survival–and to establish order–in Washington DC. Unlike the first game’s snowy New York City, this seems quite a pleasant place, aside from the virus and all the gangs and factions murdering each other. Here, watch the first lump of gameplay footage in a demonstration vid from Ubi below. And yes, you bet your botty it includes ha-ha-hilarious scripted banter between players.
