TowerFall Creator Announces Mountain ‘Em Up Celeste

TowerFall creator Matt Thorson has announced his next game, a mountain-climbing platformer named Celeste [official site]. Together with Noel Berry, he’s “re-imagining” the wee prototype they made last year in only four days – which you can still play online. Unlike the local multiplayer murder madness of TowerFall, Celeste looks like quite a chill – though certainly not easy – solo adventure.

Chumicide: TowerFall Dark World Adds Level Editor

TowerFall Ascension [official site] is a grand game for friendly jostling on the couch with your pals as you try to murder each other (and in the game). Pling arrows, snatch powerups, catch arrows in mid air, and shout “OH MY GOD NO HOW DID YOU-!” – it’s a right lark. Now you can make your palmurders a little more personal, as a level editor is out for folks who also own its Dark World expansion.

For folks who are new to chumicide, the game and Dark World are on sale for a bit.

Oops: TowerFall Expansion Is Out With Four-Player Co-op

Well lawks a lummy! I’ve gotten so used to skimming over the seas of TowerFall ’em ups that I had entirely missed that more TowerFall [official site] – actual TowerFall – came out last week.

The ‘Dark World’ expansion brings a four-player co-op mode to the arrow-flinging local multiplayer murderfest, along with new arrow power-ups, procedurally-generated levels, new characters to be, and plenty more murder.

Have You Played… TowerFall Ascension?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Local multiplayer games have made an unlikely resurgence these past two years, meaning there’s half a dozen I’ve played and loved during the period. Gang Beasts is great though still feels incomplete. Nidhogg is great but I found, after years of playing the free version, that my enjoyment of its full release was shortlived. It’s TowerFall: Ascension, then, that I would recommend to anyone who wanted some single-screen gaming.

Party Games: Dog Park And GameCity’s Grand Finale

Every month, we dispatch Brendan to some of gaming’s best blowouts to schmooze and play party games with the partygoers. This week, he visits GameCity, pretends to be a dog, and listens to some spoken word performances about games.

It’s Saturday night and I’m standing in one of Nottingham’s oldest pubs, where a Tekken 3 arcade cabinet is blinking in front of me. Two of the bar’s regulars have just challenged me to a game. My opponent picks Jin out of the line-up, his favourite character. Meanwhile, his friend explains something to me – this cabinet has something of a personality. The joystick on the Player 2 side does not recognise ‘up’ or ‘down’ commands. But because this pair are always here, always playing this machine, they will let me use the Player 1 controls, effectively handicapping themselves. I put my drink down on the game’s bonnet and prepare myself. The time is approximately 1am. I have selected Law.

A Game And A Chat: GDC BFFCast Day 4/#1ReasonToBe

Hello, roving pile of RPS readers. Have you seen GDC day three laying about? I appear to have misplaced it. Or perhaps I am Gabe Newell, and I simply willed the number three out of existence or at least ignored it until it got bored and went away. Towerfall Ascension Ascends (By Which I Mean It’s Out Now)

Who would have guessed games would still look this amazing?

One day, all our jobs will crowdsourced into non-existence. For now, it’s just Steam Reviews doing it to the likes of me. For example, on the Steam page for Towerfall: Ascension, one Eric Raue writes that it is, “a masterclass example of intentional game design. Nothing feels out of place or missing. The controls and pacing have been fine tuned to create the best possible experience.” There’s no truer statement to be written about the local multiplayer 2D arrow-shooter.

There are only equally as true statements. Like “Towerfall: Ascension is out now” and “there’s an animated launch trailer below.”

Wot I Think – Towerfall: Ascension

If we’re intent on having ungames and notgames, then we need the opposite category to classify those which seem especially comfortable in their own gameyness. These gamegames, supergames, hypergames might normally be called arcadey, but they’re not retro. They’re as modern as Call of Duty, as vital and current and new as Rust or DayZ, and Towerfall: Ascension could be the genre’s fig. 1.

Here is a long descriptive sentence. Towerfall: Ascension is a single-screen competitive and co-operative local-only multiplayer game for 1-4 people in which every player is armed with a bow and arrow, and in which your objective is to kill everyone else before they kill you by whittling down their lives or, in the new Quest mode, to work with your friends to kill waves of enemies across a series of increasingly difficult levels.

Conceptually, it’s unremarkable and easily described. In execution, it’s exquisite and has me chuffing on about ubergames, ultrogames, megagames. This is wot I think.

Keen Arrow: Towerfall Lands March 11

The gleeful multiplayer exploits of Towerfall have long been the best (and perhaps) only reason to own the US Marine Corps sponsored Oorah! console. When we heard that a PC version was coming, with oodles of new features, I refused to be excited. I expected the newly colonised Towerfall: Ascension to show its face at shady conventions and to be passed around on sleek USB sticks at exclusive awards shows like Nidhogg before it. As the trailer below admirably demonstrates, Towerfall looks absolutely brilliant – a slapstick Spelunky deathmatch. The good news is that you won’t have to be in with the in crowd to play it. It’s out on March 11th. You will need friends though because multiplayer is local only, with no online support.

TowerFall Ascension Bringing Co-op, New Everything To PC

True story: during IndieCade, I walked past Ouya’s tent, and a good 50 percent of it was taken up by massive TowerFall stations. They were facing out of the tent, obscuring the remainder of the tarnished wondercube’s lineup like some massive fun planet eclipsing a dying sun. The metaphor for the state of the platform, as you can probably tell from that simile, was palpable. But it’s OK because everything’s still amazing on PC, and we’re getting the biggest, best version TowerFall has to offer (along with PS4 or whatever I guess). TowerFall Ascension will offer a new co-op quest mode, 50 new levels, and countless new items. Sorry Ouya. Maybe don’t try to prevent huge audiences of people from playing games next time. Karma and all that.

Oh Yeah, TowerFall On The PC In January


Android-based consoleface Ouya (pronounced ‘what?’) scooped up at least one game that everyone wanted to play, the multiplayer archery action game Towerfall. We’ve known for a while that it would be coming to the PC, and it was expected to flop onto it sometime in 2013. Well lo and behold, it slipped. That’s what you get for climbing towers, bucko. Did you not learn anything from Season One, Episode One of Game Of Thrones? At least it’s not moved too far along on the release axis, with the developer tentatively aiming at a January 2014 release date. As long as he manages to squeeze in the extras he’s planning.

Tower-Full: TowerFall PC Getting Full Single-Player Mode

Ouya darling TowerFall is coming to PC! What could possibly be better? An infinitely respawning tray of cookies – a cookie closet, if you will? A genie whose only job is to grant everybody’s wish for more wishes? An entire, fully functional TowerFall-themed tower as a pre-order bonus? No. The answer is a fleshed out single-player mode. That is the most exciting thing of all. The cookie tray is a close second, though. And the genie was a trick question because it is invariably evil.

OOO YEAH: Ouya Hit TowerFall Coming To PC

The Ouya has games! Some. More than one, I’m pretty sure. People have told me this, and I believe them because why would everyone be lying to me about everything in an attempt to hide the fact that my reality is a wilting cardboard construct and nobody loves me. So TowerFall. It’s apparently the mighty bow-and-arrow godking of Ouya mountain, what with its mix of hop ‘n’ bop brawling shenanigans, item-littered levels, and Robin-Hood-worthy pointy-stick-hurling antics. Unfortunately, it launched as an Ouya exclusive, and there was no hope for an unbearable not-even-a-month-long span. But now, developer Matt Thorson has announced that PC will soon join the fray – with “a ton” of new content, no less.
