Steep expansion carves path to 2018 Winter Olympics

Steep Winter Olympic expansion

Imagine a world in which Steep [official site] was a game about brewing tea. Instead of racing down snowy peaks you’d be keeping an anxious watch over a set of mugs, trying to gauge the strength of a brew and serving it to a visitor’s specifications. Harder levels would feature darker mugs making it hard to tell whether you’d got a tincture on your hands or something so full of tannins your cheeks would pucker at the bitterness.

What a world that would be. In THIS reality, however, Steep is about snowsports which means a Winter Olympics-themed event was an obvious candidate for an expansion. Swaddle up for the announcement trailer: Read the rest of this entry »

Shred it to the max in Steep’s free weekend trial

If you fancy getting out in the great outdoors this weekend, good grief! Don’t you know it’s still winter? It’s all wind and ice and snow out there. Are you up to that? Are you sure? You’ll catch your death. I worry about you. No, stay indoors and perhaps consider having a look at Steep [official site]. Ubisoft’s ski-o-snowboard-a-paraglide-u-wingsuiter is holding a free trial weekend, starting tonight, to let all and sundry play the full game. It’s not super-amazing but it does have some pretty mountains. Read the rest of this entry »

Steep adds Alaska in free update today

I have written a topical joke:

A: Which region is Ianthe Ubisoft adding to Steep [official site] in a free update today?
B: I’ll ask her.
A: Don’t worry, Alaska myself.

While B did not know, the answer is: Alaska. The open-world snowsports ’em up today adds a chunk of virtual Alaska which Ubisoft say is about the size of its Alps region – doubling the snowspace. Nice. Have a look in this trailer: Read the rest of this entry »

Boo! Ghost Recon Wildlands open beta has started

You tell me: why am I your outboard memory? Why do you need me, today, to remind you that the four-day open beta test for sandbox stealth-o-shooter Ghost Recon Wildlands [official site] is now live? We told you when it was coming, then we told you it was preloading, and now here I am telling you that it’s started. Why? Why is this on me? You could’ve written on your hand in marker: “THURS 11am: START KILLING.” Gone around muttering “Gonna kill ’em all on Thursday.” Set a voice alarm. Wrapped an elastic band around your wrist so your grotesque swollen purple hand would remind you. But no, here I am. The free Wildlands open beta is now live. You’re welcome. Wot I Think: Steep

Steep [official site] is a lot like the extreme sportspeople it represents. It is excitable, loud and eager to have fun, fast and fresh. But in its haste and keenness it has somehow forgotten to take some of the most obvious precautions and frequently falls down flat on its face. The disappointing thing is that these failings – mostly failings of control and flow – haven’t just hobbled the game, they hobble the player too.

Steep open beta: Great mountains, infuriating controls

The world has been in want of a good snowboarding game for a while. Having spent a few hours with the beta of Steep [official site] over the weekend, I’m not yet sure that it is the successor to SSX and Cool Boarders that we’re looking for. But that’s okay, because there are three other extreme sports rolled into it. And one of them involves donning a wingsuit and flying at hundreds of miles per hour towards your inevitable death.

Snow joke: Steep now preloading for open beta weekend

If you, like me, fancy hitting the slopes this weekend in the free open beta test for Ubisoft’s open-world xXtremewintersportsXx ’em up Steep [official site], fire up Uplay today. The beta doesn’t begin until Friday but you can now preload the game, which is handy as it’s a 19GB download. If that sounds big to you, hey, consider how big the Alps are. You could hardly take them home with you on the bus, could you? Read the rest of this entry »

Steep Open Beta Weekend Hits The Piste In November

Given that the PC version of Watch Dogs 2 is delayed, mid-November will be sorely lacking in Xtreme Livin’ It To The MaxX Kickin’ It Hangin’ Loose Dudes To The Max from Ubisoft. But wait, what’s that rumbling sound? Glory be! It’s an open beta weekend for Ubi’s xtreme wintersports ’em up Steep [official site], set to run November 18th to 21st. If you play the beta while listening to music from 2014 and shouting old Internet memes, Steep might just give you enough xtreme ‘tude to tide you over. Read the rest of this entry »

Steep Gets A Release Date And A New Trailer

What’s that coming over the hill? Why, it’s Ubisoft’s open-world snowy sandbox, Steep [official site], with an official release date. Steep skis onto PC on December 2nd, when you’ll be free to have altitude-defying adventures at your leisure. We also got a new trailer, which sees folks skiing, and wingsuiting, and paragliding to a catchy tune with the express purpose of getting you hyped for the game. It works, too—the game looks like a blast.

Ubi’s Steep Wingsuiting, Skiing Etc. To December

The most surprising and delightful announcement of Ubisoft’s E3 shindig is Steep [official site], an extreme wintersport ’em up with wingsuiting, snowboarding, paragliding, and skiing around the Alps. It looks fast and fun and generally pretty dang cool! And briefly gruesome when people slam into the side of a mountain at a million miles per hour. Along with online racing and whatnot, hey, it can let you just drift around a nice snowy place. It’s due this December. Here, get this gameplay in your eyes:

Tom Clancy’s The Division Forming Up To Fall Out In March

Following recent word of a delay for Tom Clancy’s The Division [official site], Ubisoft used their E3 event to give it a new release date: March 8th, 2016.

Ubi also showed off a bit of the mostly-co-op shooter’s player vs. player action. It goes down in an area called the Dark Zone (imaginative), where you can find fancy loot if you venture in but run the risk of teamies betraying you, shooting your face off, and stealing your hard-stolen shinies. This one is going to ruin friendships, isn’t it?

Divided: Tom Clancy’s The Division Delayed Into 2016

Oh, for goodness’ sake! Only the other day I was wondering what had been going on with Tom Clancy’s The Division [official site], and whether the co-op- action-RPG shooter had been delayed or what. Ubisoft could’ve slipped in mention of a delay alongside the news that a fourth studio had joined development but no, no, they have to have their nice, clean, tidy ‘message’. And this way, old muggins here writes two stories about the game instead of one.

So here, look, The Division has been delayed from its unlikely-looking release window of 2015 into early 2016. You really are a rotter, Yann Ubisoft.

United: Another Studio Joins Tom Clancy’s The Division

Ooh! Did you hear that? Just now, carried on the wind. It sounded like… clearly scripted banter from an Ubisoft gameplay demonstration. We’ve barely heard from Tom Clancy’s The Division [official site] since its showing at E3 last year, and I’d half-wondered if it might be mired in development hell. It’d been delayed once before, and was awfully quiet for a game supposedly due this year.

Well, with E3 nearing (just over a month until I start drinking at my desk), Ubisoft have announced that another studio joined in to help out development. Ubisoft Annecy are the fourth lot working on The Division, and I’d wager they’re working on its unlockable, upgradeable persistent bases.
