Relic: no “major content” planned for Dawn of War 3 after it fails to hit targets

dow3-knight

There will be no “major” expansion content for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III and the studio has turned to other projects, Relic confirmed to us today, despite intentions to the contrary discussed last year. The Games Workshop-themed strategy game was met with a divisive response due to its abandonment of real-time strategy mainstays in favour of more of a hero unit approach, in addition to an overly-formulaic singleplayer campaign.

DOW’s active players have slumped in the ten months since release – to the point that there were, over the past 30 days, twice as many people playing the original, 2004 Dawn of War and its expansions as there were last Spring’s Dawn of War III.

Have you played… Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Soulstorm?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

I genuinely couldn’t say whether Soulstorm was the ‘best’ version of Relic’s first 40K RTS, but it’s certainly the one that makes me feel fondest towards the series.

WH40K: Dawn of War’s Witch Hunters Mod Is Finally Out

Relic are still poking at Dawn of War II, but what about the first of Relic’s Warhammer 40,000 RTSs? Delightfully, modders are still happily working on expanding and revamping Dawn of War, and this weekend saw the release of the Witch Hunters: Adepta Sororitas mod [official site] for DoW: Soulstorm. It adds a new army drawing from the judicial and ecclesiastical arms of the Emperor’s might, from humble space-cops to the terrifying Sisters of Battle.

All 40,000 Dawn Of War Games Free To Try On Steam

By 2017, every human being on Earth will be developing a Warhammer 40,000 game. I suppose it’s possible that at least one of those 7.125 billion titles will go on to be as beloved as Relic’s Dawn of War series, but it does seem unlikely.

If you’re one of the few people yet to play a Dawn of War – perhaps because you’ve been too busy making Warhammer 40,000: Tyranid Dating Sim* – then good news: the entire franchise, including every single expansion pack and piece of DLC, is free to play on Steam all weekend, and heavily discounted if you want to keep any or all of it. Also, the first DoW is getting a brand new map. Pretty good going for an 11-year-old game.

TITANS! Dawn Of War Ultimate Apocalypse Does Epic 40K

TITANS

I would love to froth at you about the new release of an ultromod for the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Soulstorm, which transforms it into a simalcrum of Epic / Apocalypse 40K. Genuinely would love to. Epic was my first Games Workshop game, and because the first things we’re exposed to are always the ones we believe to be the best, its grand-scale, massed army, enormous Titan-centric battles remain the only way I think 40K should be played. Unfortunately I’ve had more luck trying to elicit empathy in cats than I have trying to download ‘grand release’ of Ultimate Apocalypse at a sensible speed, so can’t tell you much for at least another three hours. But I am going to point at it and say ‘look! Look! Wouldn’t it be amazing if this was as good as it sounded?’

Dawn of War 2 Beta Early Access (And Impressions)

How can they cut the power? They're animals, man.

To tie in with the early access to the Dawn of War beta kicking off, I wrote up some impressions over at Eurogamer. I had to resist just making Tyranid impressions for my entire word-count, because I’m weak like that. The beta turns open on January 28th, but until then anyone with a Dawn of War: Soulstorm key can play. It’s now available at 75% off on steam – so about four quid – which sounds a highly acceptable price for a game we weren’t totally enamoured with. (Actually, if you’ve never played DoW at all, I think for four quid, Soulstorm is where I’d suggest you start, even without the early access stuff). Alternatively, Eurogamer are giving away 3000 (count ’em!) keys at the weekend.

Press release beneath the cut? Sounds about right.

The RPS Verdict: Dawn of War – Soulstorm

It’s verdict time again and we’ve all been playing Warhammer 40k: Dawn Of War – Soulstorm. It’s Real Time Strategy in that distant universe where the warring space folks are all vaguely analogous to fantasy archetypes. Hmm. Let’s see what we thought of it.

John : Jim. I’ve heard something about a game called Warhammer: 40,000,000,000 Mark of Chaos: Dawn of War: Soulstorm. Tell us about it.
Jim : Ok, Soulstorm is the ninety fifth expansion pack for Dawn of War, I think? And it’s ONLY WAR in there. No making friends, no talking to the monsters. It’s RTS explosions n stuff, with nine races from the Games Workshop codices of miniature armament. Imagine that!
Kieron : (Count ’em!)

Nothing Compared To Dark Crusade!

I went and reviewed Soulstorm over on Eurogamer. This is one of those reviews that someone is going to fiercely disagree with, isn’t it?

The normal Eldar might be a bit emo, but they’ve got some class. The Deldar are awkward pubescent posers, like they did Chaos but didn’t inhale.

Polish Journalist Versus Relic Bloodbath

Honestly, if it went on for another five minutes, it'd have ended up like this.

I exaggerate only slightly.

Since Soulstorm is out and it looks like Dawn of War 2’s announcement may be imminent, I thought it time to transcribe a passably memorable event that I had on tape. It occurred when Alec and I toddled over to visit Relic when they first debuted Soulstorm. To be precise, when Executive Producer Jonathan Dowdeswell stopped the video, and asked if there were any questions. And a Polish Journalist showed that, yes, he had.

This lead to fifteen minutes of intense wincing and turning “Your game is nothing compared to Starcraft 2! Nothing!” into a games journalist running joke.

The origin of which I now share.

War Dawns Anew

Soulstorm, the latest ‘expandalone’ (Relic’s word, not mine, and one I feel I should loathe, yet somehow don’t. Possibly because it’s simply too ridiculous to be offended by) for Dawn of War is now on Steam (Edit – not until tomorrow in Europe. Pah. Edit-edit – and now tomorrow is today. Jinkies!). It’s also available from the primitive constructs of brick, plaster and listless teenage clerks our ancestors referred to as ‘shops’.

My earliest tinkerings suggest that, as I had worried, the two new races lack the riotous excess and charm of their more iconic forerunners, but I’ll look closer and establish whether I’m just being snobbish and too hung up on Dreadnoughts. This does have war nuns, after all.

Soulstorm Demo

OMG LADIES

Looking at our big list of games we’re planning to preview over the next few weeks, which is of course absolutely exhaustive and not at all limited to whatever we remembered off the tops of our heads, there really aren’t a lot of RTSes on it. In fact, there’re only two, and we’ve written about one already. Um.

It’s not, for once, because we’re meatheaded cretins. It’s because there isn’t that much to get excited about at the moment, tiny-tank wise. Which is odd, as we’ve just come from an extraordinarily good couple of years for RTS – Company of Heroes (x2), Supreme Commander (x2), World in Conflict, Command & Conquer 3, Medieval II… Let’s hope there’s a load of explodey goodies due to be revealed in the coming months.

One to look forward to that isn’t on our list (largely because, let’s be honest, we know pretty much exactly what it’s gonna be like), is the third expansion for Dawn of War. So I’ll talk a little about it here instead.

Alice in her Power Armour

The second race in the forthcoming Dawn of War: Soulstorm has been announced. It’s the Sisters of Mercy!

Thanks Gametrailers! May you continue to live in a grinning future where there is only game footage.

Battles. No, I mean, Sisters of Battle.

Oddly, it’s been announced two weeks back over at Gamespot (See here to see a member of Relic say so if you frown at quotes) and according to google the only people who appeared to have noticed were one Relic community site. Why the lack of excitement? Probably net laziness. That, or that everyone thinks the Sisters of Battle are just Space Marines in drag.

Soulstorm Trailer

The most recent Dawn of War expansion now has a gameplay trailer, feature lots of gory, shooty action from those pernicious Dark Eldar. It’s the briefest of orchestrally-soundtracked showpieces, but I have to admit it’s already got me eyeing the Dawn Of War discs on my shelf, sitting as they are (in some odd twist of accidental organisation) between Star Wars Empire At War and Company Of Heroes. And no, my games aren’t cataloged by degrees of genre, they’re cataloged between shelf, desk, floor and occasionally, bin.

Anyway:

Thanks, Game Trailers! Thanks.

Are y’all still excited about Dawn Of War, or is it time to move on? And would a 40k MMO have been a whole lot more interesting than Warhammer Fantasy? (Clue: it would.)
